Kinney Among Cardinals Third Spring Cuts

Josh Kinney, Shelby Miller, Evan MacLane and Lance Lynn were sent to St. Louis Cardinals minor league camp on Sunday. 37 remain to battle for 25 jobs.

Prior to Sunday's rain-interrupted game against the Atlanta Braves, the St. Louis Cardinals made their third cuts of the spring, sending four pitchers out to their minor league camp. Non-roster invitees Lance Lynn and Evan MacLane were reassigned to the minors as was special camp invitee Shelby Miller. In addition, reliever Josh Kinney was optioned to Triple-A Memphis.

Kinney's bid to make the Cardinals was ruined by a shoulder ailment that required an MRI and anti-inflammatories. Twice, the right-hander was out of action for six days, pitching in just three games this spring, allowing three runs in three innings of work. Only in his first outing was the 30-year-old not charged with an earned run.

Lynn, the Cardinals Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2009, has only pitched in one regular season game above Double-A and is slated to anchor the Memphis rotation this season. This spring, the 22-year-old righty had a strong opening outing, three scoreless frames, but yielded seven earned runs over his final two appearances of three innings total.

MacLane, our Memphis Pitcher of the Year in 2009, re-signed with the Cardinals after having become a minor league free agent. The 27-year-old lefty allowed ten earned runs in 6 2/3 spring innings, including a rough six-run outing in a "B" game on the 13th.

Miller, the Cardinals first-round draft pick in 2009, was the recipient of an unofficial spring camp invitation and impressed everyone with his poise, offerings and results. The 19-year-old right-hander tossed two scoreless innings, allowing four baserunners, three on hits and one via walk.

Looking ahead

The Cardinals now have ten Florida games remaining plus two exhibitions in Minnesota to close out their spring training schedule and finalize their roster.

After Friday's return of Rule 5 pick Ben Jukich to Cincinnati and these moves, 37 players remain in major league camp. They include six non-roster invitees - five pitchers and infielder Ruben Gotay. The five remaining NRI pitchers are Rich Hill, Fernando Salas, Eduardo Sanchez, Oneli Perez and Pete Parise.

The other 31 are survivors of the 38 players currently on the 40-man roster. Along with Kinney, the other six 40-man players previously optioned out are Bryan Anderson, Mark Hamilton, Daryl Jones, Shane Robinson, Francisco Samuel and Tyler Norrick.

Of the 37 players still in camp, just over half, 19, are pitchers. The remaining 18 position players break out as follows - three catchers, eight infielders and seven outfielders.
