Scott Gorgen and David Kopp were the Springfield starting pitchers named to the North Division squad. Gorgen had a 5-1 record with a 1.17 ERA before leaving his last start on May 19 due to an elbow strain. The Cardinal Nation's Pitcher of the Month for April is expected to be out until August due to the injury. Because of that, Springfield starter Brian Broderick, 2-1, 2.25 ERA, was added to the roster, replacing Gorgen.
Kopp had missed extensive time over the past three seasons due to shoulder injuries but now appears to be healthy for the first time in his pro career. The 2007 second round pick has a record of 8-1 with a 2.61 ERA in 12 starts this season. His victory total is tied with Blake Beavan for the top spot in the Texas League. The former Clemson Tiger ranks sixth in ERA.
Eduardo Sanchez was also named to the North's pitching staff. The 21-year-old sprung up Cardinals' prospects lists after a sensational 2009 and ranked number six here at The Cardinal Nation. This season, he has posted a 2.86 ERA with nine saves for the Cardinals. Sanchez' save total is the second best mark on the circuit. He went on the disabled list on May 31 due to an ankle injury and has not seen action since May 28, but is expected to be activated soon.
The North's starting catcher Steven Hill has turned in an outstanding performance at the plate as he continues to hone his craft behind it. Hill is hitting .281/.356/.508 with nine home runs and 39 RBIs. The backstop ranks tied for fifth in home runs and RBIs while ranking third in doubles in the Texas League.
Starting first baseman Curt Smith has quietly put together a fantastic season for the Cardinals. The former 39th round pick is hitting .280/.304/.436 with seven home runs and 31 RBIs. Smith ranks among the TL top ten in hits and total bases.
After recently being referred to by manager Pop Warner as a team leader, Aaron Luna was rewarded with an All-Star selection and will start for his squad in the outfield. The former Rice Owl has a slash line of .259/.412/.434 with seven home runs and 28 RBIs. Luna is tied for the lead league in walks while ranking third in on base percentage.
The Cardinal Nation's 2009 Palm Beach Player of the Year, Adron Chambers, rounds out the Springfield selections. Chambers has posted a line of .279/.380/.405. The former 38th round selection is tied for third on the circuit in triples, fifth in on base percentage, and sixth in runs among all the Texas League leaders.
The North Division squad will be managed by Northwest Arkansas manager Darren Bush. Of note on his staff is former Cardinal farmhand, Terry Bradshaw.
