Cardinals Minor League Notebook: 07/17/10

Starters Kevin Thomas and Jared Bradford combined for 10 2/3 shutout innings as Palm Beach swept a doubleheader. The system went 5-2 on Friday.

Behind David Kopp, the Redbirds fell behind 5-0 after three and could not close the gap against former Marlins starter Chris Volstad. June organizational Player of the Month Bryan Anderson had a pair of doubles and recently-returned Mark Hamilton homered and drove in two.

Springfield (6-11, second half) at NW Arkansas – DH postponed


Originally scheduled for a doubleheader on Friday night, the set between the visiting Springfield Cardinals and NW Arkansas Naturals was postponed for the second consecutive night due to unsafe field conditions. What was scheduled as a four-game series has been cut to three because of the two postponements.  The clubs hope to get in a Saturday doubleheader starting at 6 p.m. with the make up of Thursday's game to be played as part of a doubleheader next Friday, July 23 at Arvest Ballpark in Springdale, AR.

Kevin Thomas shut the Tigers out on three hits over 5 2/3 innings and David Carpenter picked up the four-out save, his tenth of the season. Catcher Charles Cutler had a triple(!) and two RBI while D'Marcus Ingram had three hits.

Deryk Hooker set a season high with nine strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings and Mike Blazek and Aaron Terry tossed one-hit ball over the final 3 2/3. Ryan Jackson clubbed a three-run home run and reached on base all four times up as the Bandits salvaged the final game of their first-ever series against the Captains.

The Cards scored one in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extras, but the depleted pen forced catcher Anthony Garcia into emergency action. It didn't go well as he took his first professional loss. Kyle Mura made his first rehab appearance since being assigned to the club.
