Cardinals Minor League Notebook: 09/05/10

Behind Kevin Siegrist, Johnson City won its first championship in 34 years. Palm Beach was eliminated and Memphis and Springfield could not clinch. Playoff-bound Quad Cities and Batavia both lost on a 3-3 Saturday across the system.

Game two of the PCL American North shootout didn't go any better than the first as the Redbirds lost a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth. In the process, Memphis fell to 1-5 in Des Moines this season. Now the Redbirds must take the final two games on Sunday and Monday or miss the playoffs.

Even more important than this game, Tulsa remained alive, defeating NW Arkansas. Until Tulsa is eliminated, the Cardinals are not in the playoffs. Still, Springfield took care of its' business behind seven shutout innings from Brian Broderick, who improved to 11-2 in the process.

The Cardinals were eliminated from post-season play when Bradenton won. At least they broke their four-game losing streak and still have a shot at a winning record under first-year manager Luis Aguayo. Brett Zawacki allowed just one run in five innings and Alex Castellanos plated four.

Preparing for the playoffs, the Bandits showed little as their five-game winning streak ended. Two early errors led to Peoria's first four runs, all unearned. Eric Fornataro took the loss, his 15th of the season vs. seven wins.

The playoff-bound Muckdogs blew a 9-2 lead when the pen allowed 13 runs in the bottom of the fifth. Javier Avendano made his New York-Penn League debut as the Muckdogs' starter, allowing two runs in four innings.

The Cardinals took the Appalachian League championship, their first since 1976, by winning the first two of the three-game series against the Twins. Johnson City scored three in the first inning via small ball and never looked back. Kevin Siegrist allowed just one run on three hits in 6 2/3 innings. Hector Corpas picked up the save, fanning three of four batters faced. Virgil Hill doubled, homered and drove in the final three runs.
