Zach Putnam Profile
In the latest game of musical bullpen, the Chicago Cubs have called up relief pitcher Zach Putnam from AAA Iowa and sent down Alex Burnett, who was claimed off waivers from Baltimore on May 27. The Cubs also announced pitcher Kyuji Fujikawa has been transferred to the 60-day disabled list and Michael Bowden, a right-handed reliever, has accepted his assignment to Iowa.
Putnam, 25, was claimed off waivers by the Cubs in November of 2012 and pitched in the big leagues for Cleveland (2011) and Colorado (2012). He's appeared in 10 games allowing 13 hits in 9.1 innings with one walk and nine strikeouts. The right-hander made 17 appearances at Iowa going 1-1 with a 3.26 ERA and four saves. He allowed 20 hits in 19.1 innings with six walks and 22 strikeouts. Putnam was a non-roster invitee to spring training.
Putnam was ranked as the third best high school player in the country in 2005 and a top 50 draft prospect but made his intentions know he was attending Michigan University as the Tigers selected him in the 38th round. He was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Year in 2008 and was drafted in the fifth round by Cleveland. He made his way up the Cleveland system making his MLB debut on Sept. 13, 2011 against Texas.
