Along with his family and Clemson head coach Brad Brownell, the decision was reached on Wednesday.
"I don't want to come back in the middle of the year and not know any of the plays. Just coming back in the middle of the year would be tough anyway," Blossomgame said. "They're saying in January I'd be 100 percent and that's when we start playing the ACC schedule. I don't want to get back and my first game to be an ACC schedule team."
Brownell said Blossomgame began showing significant signs of improvement in late September and early October. They were optimistic he would have a chance to play this season if the improvement continued to trend in that direction.
"He's still consistently improving," Brownell said. "There have been no problems with that. There just hasn't been -- maybe -- a significant jump in the last two to three weeks that would let me believe that he's ready or would be ready within the next month. I just don't see that happening.
"So, obviously, we've decided to redshirt him. He's very good about that. I think he really enjoys his time in Clemson. He certainly feels like he's improving right now, both physically and mentally, as a player."
Blossomgame, who committed to Brownell in February of 2011, has yet to join the team in full-court workouts. He continues to go through individual drills with a primary focus on ball handling.
"We're certainly going to miss him, because he's a terrific front-court athlete that would help us with depth and some scoring," Brownell said.
The former three-star prospect from Chattahoochee High School in Alpharetta, Ga. was one of five freshmen signed by Clemson in the 2012 class.
Blossomgame has already come to terms with having to watch his classmates get their first taste of college action.
"I have no control over it," he said. "If I do play now I won't be able to compete like I want to. I feel like it would hold me back from being the best player I can be, so I think redshirting can actually help me in the long run. I'm going to be a better player at 22 than I am at 18."
