Cubs April 8 Minor League Recap

Kane County got a walk-off single from Bijan Rademacher, pictured, in the bottom of the 10th for their first victory of the season

Kane County 6, Clinton 5

The third time was a charm for Kane County as the Cougars, playing in their third straight extra inning game, earned their first victory of the season on Bijan Rademacher's walk-off single in the 10th.

The Cougars got their first lead of the season as Oliver Zapata led off with a walk, went to third on a single by Gioskar Amaya, and scored on Daniel Vogelbach's sacrifice fly. The lead didn't last long as Gaby Guerrero, the nephew of former MLB all-star Vladimir Guerrero, doubled in the second and scored on a sacrifice fly to knot the game at 1-1. Kane County regained the lead in the second as Chadd Krist led off with a double and eventually scored on a grounder by Wes Darvill. Rademacher picked a great time for his first hit of the season, breaking a 0-10 streak with a two-run single scoring Krist (single) and Pin-Chieh Chen (bunt single). Amaya, who entered the game 2-16, got his second hit, a triple, and scored on Vogelbach's groundout. The Lumberkings got a pair back in the eighth when Guillermo Pimental took a Justin Amlung offering out of the park to cut the lead to 5-3. Clinton tied it in the ninth as Tyler Ard homered off Amlung and after a walk and a wild pitch, a two-out single tied the game. Shoulders opened the tenth with his second hit of the game and took second on a ground out. After a two-out walk to Darvill, Rademacher ripped a line drive to center, his third hit of the game, plating the winning run.

Lendy Castillo may be 24-years-old but the right-hander has just 147 innings on his arm. Signed by the Phillies as a shortstop in 2006 and switched to the mound in 2010, the Cubs grabbed the Dominican native in the December 2011 Rule 5 draft. He made the opening day roster out of spring training, making his MLB debut on April 9, 2012. After 12 more games with the Cubs (16 IP, 12 BB, 13 K, 7.88 ERA) he was placed on the disabled list with a left groin strain and did not return to the big leagues. He pitched at Mesa (4 games), Daytona (1 games) and Tennessee (2 games) totaling 20 innings allowing two earned runs while fanning 22. Castillo was effective in his opening game of the season for Kane County, allowing three hits and one run in five innings with four strikeouts and a walk. Brian Smith, a left-hander from Canada, relieved in the sixth making his second appearance of the season. The 40th round pick in 2010 tossed two scoreless frames allowing one hit and a walk, fanning one. Amlung got the win despite allowing four runs on four hits, two homers, in three innings.

Cougars lineup: Zapata CF (0-4), Amaya 2B (3-5 3B SB), Vogelbach DH (0-4 2 RBI), Candelario 3B (0-5), Shoulders 1B (2-5), Krist C (3-5 2 2B), Chen LF (2-5), Darvill SS (0-3 RBI) Rademacher RF (3-5 3 RBI)

Cougar notes……Rock Shoulders made his first start at first base Monday after being in left field on Sunday and DH for the first three games. He extended his hitting streak to five games.……...Kane County play-by-play announcer Wayne Randazzo, AM 1280, reported during Monday's broadcast that outfielder Trey Martin had a shoulder injury and would miss a few games.

Pensacola 2, Tennessee 1

Pensacola won their second straight one-run game winning the rubber game of the five game series.

Matt Szczur got the Smokies started with a leadoff single in the first, took third on Arismendy Alcantara's single, and scored on a deep fly ball out to left by Justin Bour. The Reds affiliate tied the game in the fifth on a bases-loaded single but the Smokies got a double play to get out of the inning. An error by 2B Eilott Soto, followed by a RBI double, put Pensacola ahead 2-1 in the sixth.

Dae-Eun Rhee made 26 starts last year in AA totaling 142.1 IP, (2nd on the team) going 9-8 with a 4.81 ERA, so its no surprise he returns to the Smokies as he had a BAA of .298 last year. The right-hander from South Korea pitched two years in the FSL for Daytona (2010-11), making 42 starts, tossing 242 innings, and leading the league with four complete games in 2011. Rhee cruised through the first four innings Monday night allowing just one hit and a walk but got into a jam in the fifth and when he walked a hitter on his 56th pitch, his night was done. Brian Schlitter, a 6-foot-5 right hander, pitched in his second game, yielding two hits, an unearned run, and a walk in 2.1 innings, throwing 30 pitches. Zach Rosscup struckout the side in the seventh and the lefty fanned eight Wahoos in three innings in the series. Trey McNutt retired the side in order in the eighth.

Smokies lineup: Szczur CF(2-3), Alcantara SS (2-4), Ha RF(0-3), Bour 1B (0-3 RBI), Villanueva 3B (0-4), Silva LF (1-4), Lopez C (0-2), Soto 2B (0-3), Rhee RHP (0-2), Mota 2B (0-1)

Round Rock 13, Iowa 5

Iowa pitching got hit hard for the fifth straight game allowing 13 hits and three homers.

Round Rock didn't waste anytime getting on the board with a two-run double and a grand slam in the first for a 6-0 lead. The added another run in the second but the I-Cubs broke through in the fourth on Logan Watkin's first homer of the season. Round Rock knocked another ball out of the park in the fourth, a two-run shot, for a 9-1 lead. Iowa got a pair back in the fifth on a run-scoring double by J.C. Boscan and a groundout RBI by Edwin Maysonet. A 2-run homer highlighted a four-run fourth by the Express but Iowa scored two more runs in the eighth on a two-run single from Brett Jackson, his second hit of the night.

Barret Loux was eventually acquired when the Cubs traded Geovoney Soto to the Rangers last July and the 2012 Texas League Pitcher of the Year made his Cubs' debut Monday night. He really labored in the first inning, working behind as he couldn't get his off speed pitches over, walking three, along with two doubles and a grand slam. He threw 43 pitches in the only inning he worked. Jaye Chapman, another pitcher acquired via trade last year, went 2.2 innings throwing 52 pitches (2 H, 2 ER, 3 BB) before giving way to Cory Wade. Appearing in 79 games for the Yankee the past two seasons, Wade tossed three innings as the Express had eight hits (2 HR) and five runs off the righty. Blake Parker pitched the final 1.1 innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts and a walk.

Cubs lineup: Watkins 2B (2-4 HR RBI), Jackson CF (2-4 2B 2 RBI), Wright DH (0-4), Nelson 1B (1-4), Sweeney LF (0-4), Murphy SS (2-4 2B), Bogusevic RF (2-3), Boscan C (1-4 RBI), Maysonet 3B (1-4 RBI)

Daytona had the day off and host Clearwater in a three-game series as the Cubs' Zach Cates gets his first start of the year on April 9 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
