Cubs April 12 Minor League Recap

Daytona and Tennessee both won while Kane County lost to Mother Nature for the second straight day. Taiwan Easterling, pictured, drove in three runs in the Daytona win.

Daytona 5, Tampa 0

Austin Kirk and Yao-Ling Wang combined for a three-hit shutout and Taiwan Easterling drove in three runs to lead Daytona to victory.

Scoring Recap: The Cubs broke a scoreless game in the third on a two-out RBI double by Easterling and Javier Baez followed with a run-scoring single. Zeke DeVoss was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth and Easterling continued his hot streak with a two-run single making it 5-0.

Pitching Recap: Austin Kirk worked five scoreless innings, making pitches when he needed them, as the lefty walked four and allowed two hits while fanning two. Yao-Ling Wang, following Kirk's outing for the second straight time this season, was just as impressive limiting the Yankee bats to one hit over four innings with a walk and five strikeouts to earn the save.

Cubs Lineup: DeVoss CF (0-3, R, RBI, HBP), Easterling LF (2-5, R, 2B, 3RBI), Baez SS (1-4, RBI), Andreoli RF (0-4), Bruno 2B (1-4, 2B), Geiger 1B (1-4), Carhart 3B (0-4), Noble C (1-3, 2B), Gibbs DH (0-2, R, 2BB).

Cubs Notes: Daytona has yet to allow a run on the road tossing their third straight shutout…...Easterling is now 6-14 in his last three games and is tied for team RBI lead (7) with DeVoss

Tennessee 2, Chattanooga 1

Matt Szczur scored a run and drove in another and Eric Jokish tossed six strong innings to lead the Smokies to their first home win of the season.

Scoring Recap: The Smokies scored in their first at-bat as Szczur drew a walk, took second on a groundout, and scored on Jae-Hoon Ha's single up the middle. The Smokies took advantage of a Lookouts' error for a run in the second when Rubi Silva singled and advanced to second when the second baseman dropped the ball on a force play. Szczur took a 1-1 pitch the other way for a run-scoring single, plating Silva. Chattanooga got their only run in the third on a solo homer by 1B Joc Pederson, one of the Dodgers top prospects.

Pitching Recap: Eric Jokisch turned in his second straight quality outing allowing four hits in six innings with a walk and three strikeouts. He threw 83 pitches and kept his ERA at 1.50. The Smokies bullpen shut the door on the Lookout as Tony Zych, Zac Rosscup and Trey McNutt each worked a scoreless inning with McNutt earning his first save of the year.

Smokies Lineup: Szczur LF (1-3, RBI, BB), Alcantara SS (0-3 BB), Ha RF (1-3 RBI), Bour 1B (0-4), Villanueva 3B (0-4), Lopez C (0-4), Silva CF (1-3 R), Mota 2B (1-3), Jokisch P (0-2), Torreyes PH (0-0 BB)

Smokies Notes: Ronald Torreyes, 2B, has joined the team from extended spring training. Acquired in the Sean Marshall trade with Travis Wood and Dave Sappelt, Torreyes played in 115 games last year at Daytona (.264/.326/.385) with 13 SB. Torreyes was expected to start the season with the Smokies but instead spent an extra week in Mesa. To make room on the roster, Tim Torres was promoted to AAA Iowa, as the I-Cubs put Josh Vitters on the DL. Elliot Solo has been placed on the DL and Anthony Giansanti has been activated from the DL.

Albuquerque 15, Iowa 5

Albuquerque continued to feast on Iowa pitching as the Isotopes spoiled the home opener for the I-Cubs with 15 hits, including four homers.

Scoring Recap: Albuquerque took a 1-0 lead in the first on a two-out double by Cub killer Scott Van Slyke but Edwin Maysonet's sacrifice fly tied the game in the bottom of the second. The visitors regained the lead in the third but Maysonet delivered a two-run single for a 3-2 lead at a chilly Principal Park. The Isotopes took control with five runs in the fifth and added five more in the sixth, hitting three homers. Ryan Sweeney blasted his second homer of the season, a two-run shot in the eighth for Iowa. The Isotopes added a three-run homer in the ninth.

Pitching Recap: Nick Struck survived four innings giving up two runs on five hits and a walk. He fanned three in his second start of the year throwing 83 pitches. Esmailin Caridad gave up a grand slam and an unearned run in his one inning, allowing three hits with three walks. Jaye Chapman retired only two hitters in the fifth before he was charged with five runs on six hits and a walk. After giving up 12 hits in his first two appearances of the season (4.2 IP), Cory Wade looked more like a guy that pitched 39 big league games last year tossing 3 innings of hitless baseball with 3 BB and 5 Ks. Jensen Lewis, making his fourth appearance, came in with two-outs in the ninth and allowed a three-run homer.

Cubs Lineup: Watkins 2B (0-2 3 BB), Jackson CF (0-3) Wade P (1-1 R), McDonald PH (0-1), Murphy SS (0-3 2BB), Nelson 1B (0-5), Sweeney LF/CF (1-4 ,HR, 2RBI) Bogusevic RF (2-3 2 R), Boscan C (2-3 1R), Maysonet 3B (1-3 3RBI) Struck P (0-1) Torres PH (0-1), Wright (1-2)

Iowa Notes: Josh Vitters was placed on the DL with back problems he has been having since the season began. Vitters has been coaching first base for Iowa. Tim Torres, a second baseman, has been called up from AA Tennessee. Torres was signed as a free agent in 2013 and is a seven-year veteran of the minors. He played in six games with the Smokes, hitting .250 with a stolen base.
