Cubs April 13 Minor League Recap

Two pitchers acquired in trades last year helped Iowa and Tennessee to wins Saturday night. Barret Loux, pictured, fanned five in his first career AAA win while Kyle Hendricks got his first AA victory tossing six innings for the Smokies. Darwin Barney played at Iowa going 1-4 in a rehab start.

Tennessee 8, Chattanooga 6

Arismindy Alcantara blasted a three-run homer and Justin Bour added three RBI as the Smokies hung on for the win.

Scoring Recap: The Smokies took a 2-0 lead in the third on a two-run single by Bour and Rubi Silva followed with a two-run triple for a 4-0 advantage. Bour added a RBI single in the fifth and Alcantara hit a three-run homer, his second of the season, in the sixth, for a 8-1 lead. The Lookouts scored a unearned run in the sixth on a throwing error by Silva and added a three-run homer by Dodgers' top prospect Yasiel Puig. Chattanooga made it interesting with two more runs in the eighth but Tennessee's Frank Batista came in and slammed the door.

Pitching Recap: Kyle Hendricks, acquired last year in the trade for Ryan Dempster, got his first career AA win allowing five hits and one unearned run in six innings. The right-hander walked three and fanned one, throwing 84 pitches in the victory. After allowing only one hit in his previous two games, A.J. Morris ran into trouble yielding five runs in 1.1 innings. Batista gave up a single to his first batter but retired the final five hitters for his first save.

Smokies Notes: Ronald Torreyes, 2B, made his first start of the season and batted leadoff with two hits and a walk. …...Rubi Silva was a home run short of the cycle and is now hitting .320.

Iowa 6, Albuquerque1

Logan Watkins hit a two-run homer, Barret Loux got his first AAA win, and Yoanner Negrin fanned eight Isotopes in three innings as the Cubs beat Albuquerque for the first time in six games.

Scoring Recap: The Isotopes drew first blood with a RBI double in the second but the I-Cubs answered right back on a run-scoring single by J.C. Boscan in the bottom of the inning. Logan Watkins coaxed his second walk of the game and scored the go-ahead run in the third on Brad Nelson's two-out single. Watkins blasted a two-run homer in the fourth and Brett Jackson stroked a two-strike pitch into the corner for RBI triple, scoring Darwin Barney. Brian Bogusevic added a RBI double in the eighth for the Cubs final run.

Pitching Recap; With his fastball in the low 90s, Barret Loux was the first Iowa pitcher to cool off the Albuquerque bats giving up one earned run in five innings with five strikeouts. Mixing in a good slider, Loux threw 82 pitches, yielding six hits and two walks. Loux only lasted an inning in his first start at Round Rock on April 8, allowing six runs on three hits and three walks. The 6-foot-5 right-hander was acquired from the Rangers (2012 Texas League Pitcher of the Year) and was the sixth player taken in the 2010 draft. Yoanner Negrin, 28, continued to shut down PCL hitters (3IP, 1H, 8K) using a variety of arm angles, even sidearm, as the right hander struckout the side in the sixth and eighth, topping the gun at 92 mph. He ran his scoreless inning streak to 7.2 and has 13Ks. Negrin threw 48 pitches, 32 were strikes. Signed by the Cubs in 2011 after defecting from Cuba, he's only pitched in 11 minor league games with Cubs organization, spending most of 2012 in the Mexican League with Olmecas de Tabasco, appearing in 24 games, with 16 starts. RH Blake Parker threw a perfect ninth.

Cubs Notes: Darwin Barney played six innings innings at second base with four at-bats (strikeout looking, groundout to first, infield single, strikeout looking) He also made a nice play on a line drive in the fifth......Third baseman Ian Stewart is expected to join the I-Cubs tomorrow. He has been playing games at Extended Spring Training in Mesa. Stewart was placed on the 15-day DL in late March with a left quad strain……... Rafael Dolis, RHP, was called to Wrigley Field on Saturday as the Cubs placed Kyuji Fujikawa on the 15-day disabled list. Dolis appeared in three games with Iowa this season allowing 3H in 2.1IP. He pitched in 34 games for Chicago last year.

Wisconsin 7, Kane County 6

Kane County 3, Wisconsin 1

Wilson Contreras' two-run homer in the top of the 11th of the second game gave Kane County the split in a twin-bill on a cold Wisconsin April afternoon.

Game 1....Scoring Recap: Three walks and Oliver Zapata's sacrifice fly scored Kane County's first run of the game in the second. The Cougars loaded the bases on a hit and two walks in the third, and hot-hitting Rock Shoulders ripped a two-run double to right center scoring Gioaskar Amaya and Daniel Vogelbach. Marco Hernandez added a SAC fly for a 4-0 Cougar lead. The Timber Rattlers offense awoke from their cold weather hibernation in the third scoring three times on a RBI double and two sacrifice flies. Wisconsin added three more runs in the fourth and a homer in the sixth put the home team up 7-4. KC opened the sixth with three straight singles but the only run they could push across came on a wild pitch. Vogelbach's first homer of the year cut the lead to 7-6 to lead off the seventh, and the Cougars loaded the bases on a deep double by Jeimer Canderlario, a walk to Shoulders, and Hernandez was hit by a pitch. Rattlers reliever Martin Viramontes fanned Bijan Rademacher and Trey Martin to end the game. KC left nine runners on base and walked nine times.

Pitching Recap: Ian Dickson got his first start of the season after throwing five innings of relief against Quad Cities (4H, 2ER, 3BB, 4K). The right-hander is a 2011 35th round pick out of Lafayette College. Dickson missed the entire 2011 season due to an injury, which is why he wasn't drafted higher, and started 15 games last year for Boise (3-3 5.60 ERA). Dickson didn't walk any hitters on Saturday (he hit 2) but he didn't miss many bats as the Timber Rattlers got eight hits in five innings and he was charged with seven earned runs. He threw 81 pitches, 55 for strikes, and fanned the side in the fifth for his only three strikeouts. LHP Brian Smith threw a scoreless sixth, allowing a hit.

Game 2......Scoring Recap: The Timber Rattlers took advantage of a Wes Darvill throwing error in the fourth, getting a two-out single for a 1-0 lead. The Cougars cashed in on their best chance to score in the sixth when a walk and a single by Zapata put runners on the corners with one out. Candelario walked to load the bases and a passed ball tied the game as Amaya scored easily. Canderlario opened the 11th with a single and Contreras connected with a 1-1 offering for a homer over the left field wall.

Pitching Reap: Felix Pena made his first start of the season after tossing 5.2 IP of three-hit ball in relief against Quad Cities on April 7. On a cold day, Pena allowed five hits and an unearned run in six innings with three strikeouts. He threw 74 pitches on Saturday and has not allowed an earned run in 11.2 innings. Pena started six games for Boise last year, making nine other appearances and tossing 63 innings. He also pitched in six games (10 IP) at Peoria last season. A 2009 free-agent out of the Dominican Republic, the 6-foot-2 righty spent two years in the Dominican Summer League and then a full season at Mesa (17 games) in his first year stateside in 2011. Right-hander Justin Amlung (2-0) pitched his best baseball of the season and got the win in four innings of relief. He allowed two hits and a walk, striking out one. Eduardo Orozco threw a scoreless inning for his first save of the season.

Tampa 9, Daytona 4

Yankees' top prospect Gary Sanchez hit a pair of homer and Tampa took advantage of four Daytona errors for the win.

Scoring Update: Sanchez put Tampa up 3-0 in the first on a three-run homer off P.J. Francescon, snapping the Cubs road shutout innings streak at 27 straight. Daytona made it 3-1 in the fourth when John Andreoli singled with two outs, stole second, and scored on Stephen Bruno's RBI single. Tampa scored on a two-out run scoring single and went up 6-1 on Sanchez's second homer of the game. Javier Baez led off the sixth with a triple and scored on Dustin Geiger's RBI single to make it 6-2. The Cubs got a RBI single from Bruno (scoring Baez who had doubled) and Geiger got his second RBI with a run-scoring double to cut the deficit to 6-4. Tampa added three unearned runs in the ninth.

Pitching Recap: LHP P.J. Franceson (1-1 5.40 ERA) allowed eight hits and six earned runs with five strikeouts in five innings for Daytona. Eduardo Figueroa, a right-hander, allowed just one hit in three innings of relief but walked four, and gave up three unearned runs.
