Cubs April 17 Minor League Recap

Daytona and Tennessee both record wins but Mother Nature took care of Kane County and Iowa. Javier Baez, pictured, went 3-5 with a two-run homer for Daytona.

Daytona 13, Clearwater 2

Javier Baez broke out of his early season slump going 3-6 with a two-run homer and Dustin Geiger was 3-5 with four RBI and a homer, extending his hit streak to 10 games.

Scoring: For the tenth straight inning against Daytona, Clearwater scored, plating a run on a two-out RBI double in the first. The Cubs tied the game in the fourth on Ben Carhart's sacrifice fly and then took the lead in the fifth on a bases loaded walk as the Cubs were issued eight free passes by Clearwater starter Ethan Stewart. The Threshers evened the game up in the sixth with a solo homer. Daytona broke the game open with five runs in the seventh. After loading the bases with no outs, John Andreoli hit a sacrifice fly and then Stephen Bruno extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a run-scoring single. Dustin Geiger followed with a RBI double. Carhart made it three straight hits with a single, scoring Bruno, and Chad Noble's sacrifice fly put Daytona in front 7-2. The Cubs didn't stop hitting in the eighth as Javier Baez hit a two-run homer and Dustin Geiger added a three-run shot as they scored six times.

Pitching: Yao-Lin Wang got his first start of the year working four innings in a no-decision. The right-hander gave up three hits and one earned run with two strikeouts. Austin Kirk got the win in relief going five innings with four strikeouts allowing three hits, one a homer. Kirk (2-0) lowered his ERA to 1.38.

Tennessee 4, Huntsville 1

Eric Jokisch pitched six shutout innings and fanned seven while Christian Villanueva blasted a three-run homer as the Smokies downed Huntsville to improve to 7-6.

Scoring: Christian Villanueva put the Smokies up 3-0 in the sixth with a three-run homer scoring Arismendy Alcantara and Justin Bour, who both walked. Tennessee added a run in the ninth on a RBI single by Jonathan Mota. The Stars broke up the shutout with an unearned run in the ninth.

Pitching: LHP Eric Jokisch is quickly establishing himself as one of the top pitchers in the Southern League. Jokisch worked six shutout innings holding the Brewers AA affiliate to three hits and sent seven down on strikes. Now 2-0 on the season, Jokisch has tossed 18 innings, allowing 10 hits with 17 Ks. He has a WHIP of .72 (3rd best in SL) and a ERA of 1.00. Zach Rosscup continued to get the job done out of the pen, working two scoreless innings with a hit and a walk for his third hold of the season. Brian Schlitter, who has yet to give up an earned run, worked the ninth, allowing a run on two walks.

Kane County

Kane County and Beloit were rained out. No makeup date has been set.

Iowa

The I-Cubs game with Nashville was rained out Wednesday afternoon. It will be made up as a doubleheader on June 19. The two teams continue their series on Thursday with a 6:35 p.m. start as Nick Struck (0-1 6.00 ERA) get the ball for Iowa.
