Cubs April 20 Minor League Recap

Rock Shoulders, pictured, hit homers in both games as Kane County ended its losing streak against Quad Cities with a DH sweep. The Smokies won their fifth straight but Iowa and Daytona dropped their games.

Game 1-Kane County 7, Quad Cities 3; Game 2-Kane County 4, Quad Cities 3

Rock Shoulders provided the offense while Pierce Johnson and Taylor Scott recorded their first wins of the season as the Cougars swept the RIver Bandits.

Game 1

Pierce Johnson earned his first win allowing three hits in five innings and the Cougars ended their five-game losing streak to Quad Cities.

Scoring: Rock Shoulders doubled to lead off the second, took third on Wes Darvill's infield single, and then beat the throw home on a short fly ball to left field off the bat of Trey Martin for a 1-0 Cougar lead. Gioskar Amaya opened the third with a triple and scored on Marco Hernandez's single. Daniel Vogelbach singled and then Jeimer Candelario doubled, scoring Hernandez for a 3-0 lead. Shoulders drew a walk to load the bases and Darvill's grounder resulted in a RBI fielder's choice. Martin's second SAC fly of the game made in 5-0 in the four-run third. The Bandits got an unearned run in the fourth on a bloop single with two outs. Kane County got the run right back in the bottom of the inning as Hernandez reached on an error and scored on Candelario's pop up to left, which dropped for a hit. Shoulders continued his assault on MWL pitching driving a pitch over the fence, his third, for a 7-1 lead. QC got a two-run double in their final at-bat.

Pitching: Pierce Johnson got some revenge for his opening day performance against the River Bandits allowing an unearned in five innings for his first win in the MWL. He was in control of the game, staying ahead in the count as the right-hander fanned six, walked one, and hit one batter. He threw 86 pitches, 58 for strikes. LHP reliever Nathan Dorris lowered his ERA to 1.08 with a scoreless inning. Eduardo Orozco, seeing his first action since April 13, allowed the first three hitters to reach, two scoring, before retiring the side.

Game 2

Rock Shoulders knocked in three runs and Taylor Scott recorded his first win in the Midwest League to lead Kane County to the sweep of Quad Cities.

Scoring: Shoulders kept the hits coming in the first inning of game two with a RBI single to put the Cougars up 1-0, scoring Amaya. After going down in order in the first three innings, the Bandits scored twice in the fourth on two hits. Shoulders tied the game with his second homer of the day, turning a curve ball into a towering homer, and to no one's surprise, delivered a run scoring single in the bottom of the fifth for a 3-2 KC lead. The River Bandits tied the game in the sixth but Marco Hernandez's two-out triple in the bottom of the inning provided to be the game-winner, scoring Oliver Zapata, who led off the inning with a bunt single and stole second.

Pitching: RHP Taylor Scott was perfect through three innings but the Bandits got five hits and three runs in his final three innings. Scott got his first MWL victory and fanned four with a walk. Jeffry Antigua record his first save of the year allowing a hit in a scoreless inning. The lefty has allowed one earned run in 10 innings.

Tennessee 11, Montgomery 4

Tennessee won its fifth straight game with a 13-hit attack and Dallas Beeler got his first win of the year.

Scoring: The Smokies grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first on Arismendy Alcantara's third homer of the year, scoring Matt Szczur and Ronald Torreyes. The Biscuits cut the lead to 3-2 in the third but the Smokies added three more in the bottom of the inning on a RBI double from Jae-Hoon Ha and a two-run single from Johermyn Chavez. Szczur homered in the fourth and Tennessee added two more in the fifth on a RBI double from Chavez and a sacrifice fly by Szczur made it 9-2. The Biscuits scratched out a pair in the sixth but the Smokies answered in the seventh on a RBI double from Szczur and a sacrifice fly from Torreyes.

Pitching: Dallas Beeler has his best outing of the season working seven innings allowing two earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts. He threw 86 pitches, 53 for strikes, in recording his first win of the season. Zach Rosscup continued to impress out of the bullpen pitching in his sixth game. The lefty worked a perfect eighth with 2 Ks. Frank Batista worked a scoreless ninth to lower is ERA to 1.08.

Tampa 6, Daytona 4

Tampa scored three times in the third and hung on to win the final game of the home stand for Daytona.

Scoring: The Cubs got on the board in the first as Tim Saunders singled, stole second and scored on John Andreoli's single. Tampa used a walk, four hits and a sacrifice fly to plate three runs in the third and added another run on a wild pitch. Jorge Soler pulled Daytona to within a run with a two-run double in the seventh, scoring Saunders and Andreoli. Tampa added two big runs in the ninth on a two-out bases loaded walk and RBI single. Javier Baez hit a sacrifice fly scoring Andreoli in the ninth.

Pitching: Ben Wells fanned six but allowed seven hits and uncorked a costly wild pitch. He got 11 ground ball outs. Yeiper Castillo has his best outing pitching two perfect innings with a strikeout. LHP Sheldon McDonald walked two, gave up two hits and Tampa scored two big insurance runs in the ninth

Cubs Notes: Catcher Taylor Davis has been placed on the disabled list and Tim Saunders had been activated from the disabled. David Cales, a RHP who has missed most of the past two seasons with shoulder, was drafted in 2008 and by 2010 had moved up to Iowa before the injuries. He saved 10 games for AA Tennessee in 2010 (4-1, 2.51) and was named a Southern League All-Star, To make room on the roster for Cales, infielder David Bote was sent back to extended spring training.

Memphis 8, Iowa 5

Memphis had four extra base hits, including two homers, beating Iowa in the opening game of the series.

Scoring: Memphis grabbed the lead on a homer in the second and added three more runs in the fourth. Iowa got two runs back in the fifth on a RBI single from Luis Flores and a wild pitch. Memphis took control in the fifth scoring four times, three coming on a homer by Jermaine Curtis. Ty Wright stroked a two-run double in the eighth and Iowa added another run on a double play groundout.

Pitching: Chris Rusin had his toughest outing of the year as the Redbirds tallied eight hits and scored seven earned runs. The lefty fanned three and walked two, throwing 76 pitches before leaving with one out in the fifth. Esmailin Caridad relieved Rusin, giving up a homer while recording a pair of strikeouts in 2.2 innings. Cory Wade worked a scoreless eighth.

Cubs Notes: Cubs activate Brent Lillibridge and place Tim Torres, 2B, on the 7-day disabled list.
