Cubs April 21 Minor League Recap

Marco Hernandez's go-ahead RBI single in the 7th capped a comeback win for Kane County, their third straight. Tennessee lost in extra innings, Iowa fell 1-0, and Daytona was held to two hits.

Kane County 7, Peoria 6

Marco Hernandez delivered a two-out single in the seventh inning to put Kane County ahead for good to cap a come-from-behind win, their third straight.

Scoring: Kane County got on the board in the third on a bunt single by Trey Martin followed by Oliver Zapata's RBI triple. Pin-Chieh Chen then doubled scoring Zapata for a 2-0 Cougar lead. Rock Shoulders led off the KC fourth with a double and scored on Chad Krist's single in the fourth. Kane County made it 4-0 in the fifth when Daniel Vogelbach walked, stole second, and scored on Jeimer Candelario's double. Peoria did all their damage in the sixth scoring six times, four coming on a grand slam by Patrick Wisdom. An RBI double from Martin, a game-tying single from Chen, and a go-ahead single from Marco Hernandez gave Kane County the lead for good in the 7th.

Pitching: Felix Pena was in control for five innings, one hit and one walk, but couldn't get out of the sixth inning as a two-out walk with the bases loaded and a grand slam ended his day. (5.2 IP, 5H, 5ER, 2BB 2K). Ian Dickson allowed a run in the sixth but closed the door on the Chiefs over the final four innings to get his first MWL victory. (3.1 IP, 4H 1ER, 0BB, 3K).

Montgomery 9, Tennessee 6

The Biscuits scored three runs in the top of the 11th to end the Smokies five-game winning streak.

Scoring: The Smokies took a 4-0 lead in the second on a bases-loaded wild pitch, a two-run single from Matt Szczur, and a RBI single from Jonathan Mota. Montgomery scored lone runs in the third and fourth but Tennessee made it 5-2 with a RBI single from Rubi Silva. The Biscuits hit a two-run homer in the sixth to make it 5-4 but the Smokies answered again with a bases-loaded walk by Christian Villanueva. Montgomery tied the game with two runs off Kevin Rhoderick in the eighth and then pushed across three runs in the 11th off Tony Zych.

Pitching: Alberto Cabrera pitched into the sixth inning allowing five hits and four runs with four walks. The right-hander threw 95 pitches, 55 strikes, in his fourth game and was in line to get the win. Marcus Hatley got his first hold of the year (1.2 IP, 1H 1K). Rhoderick was charged with a blown save allowing four hits and two runs in the eighth. Trey McNutt tossed two hitless innings with a strikeout. Tony Zych got in trouble in his only inning with a leadoff walk, a hit batter, and by the time the inning was over, three runs had scored, all earned.

Smokies Notes: Tennessee put 1B Justin Bour on the 7-day disabled list and activated SS Elliot Soto from the 7-day DL.

Memphis 1, Iowa 0

Jermaine Curtis stroked a two-out single to center to give Memphis a 1-0 walk-off win in the ninth.

Scoring: A two-out single in the ninth scored the only run of the game for Memphis.

Pitching: Drew Carpenter walked five but none of them scored as he only allowed two hits in 5.2 innings. He fanned six, throwing 90 pitches, in his best outing of the season. Hisanori Takahashi made his Iowa debut retiring all four hitters he faced with a strikeout. Yoanner Negrin allowed his first run of the season but it cost Iowa the game. He ran his scoreless streak to 11.1 by allowed the game-winning hit in the ninth (1.2IP, 2H 1ER 1BB 2K)

Dunedin 9, Daytona 1

Dunedin hit two homers and held the Cubs to a pair of singles winning the first game of the series at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.

Scoring: Matt Newman hit a homer in the first and the Blue Jays added three more in the second on two walks and three singles for a 4-0 lead. Dunedin hit another solo homer in the third and tacked on four more in the fifth. Daytona's lone run came in the fourth when Tim Saunders singled, moved to third on a pair of groundouts, and scored on a wild pitch.

Pitching: After being nearly unhittable as a reliever, Ryan Searle is fooling no one as a starter getting hit hard for the second straight time. The right-hander, named the FSL pitcher of the week for April 8-14, gave up 15 hits and seven runs at Clearwater on April 16 in 4.2 innings and it wasn't much better on Sunday. Dunedin got six hits and scored five times off Searle in four innings. He walked two and had four strikeouts. Austin Reed is still waiting to put two good outings together as the right-hander allowed four runs on six hits, two earned, in two innings. David Cales made his first appearance of the year after missing most of the last two season because of shoulder problems. He tossed two scoreless innings allowing a hit while punching out three.
