Cubs April 23 Minor League Recap

A tough night for the Cubs minor league squads as the night ended with three losses and a rainout. Tennessee's Kyle Hendricks, pictured, fanned nine Biscuits in seven innings

Montgomery 4, Tennessee 3

Montgomery (9-9) scored three runs in the top of the ninth to beat Tennessee (11-7).

Scoring: Jonathan Mota gave the Smokies a 1-0 lead in the second on a solo homer and after the Biscuits tied the game in the seventh, delivered a double off the wall scoring Johermyn Chavez. Christian Villanueva added an insurance run in the eighth with a RBI single. A walk and two doubles tied the game and a bouncer over a drawn in infield gave the Biscuits a 4-3 lead.

Pitching: RHP Kyle Hendricks has his best performance since being traded to the Cubs putting down nine Biscuits on strikes in seven innings. Hendricks had command of all his pitches working both sides of the plate with his fastball and mixing in a good breaking ball. He threw 87 pitches, 60 strikes, allowing three hits and one walk. Zach Rosscup continued to impress out of the bullpen striking out the side in the eighth after a two-out double. Trey McNutt walked the first hitter in the ninth and two doubles later the game was tied. McNutt was charged with a blown save and took the loss (1IP, 3 H 3ER, 2BB)

Smokies Notes: 1B Justin Bour tweeted today "Fractured wrist = no bueno. But everything happens for a reason and I plan on coming back stronger." He was placed on the 15-day DL April 20. Ty Wright was assigned to Tennessee from Iowa. Wright is no stranger to Tennessee having spent part of the last four seasons with the Smokies. To make room for Wright, infielder Anthony Giansanti was sent to Daytona.

Memphis 4, Iowa 1

Memphis (11-7) scored all the runs they would need in the second inning in their win over Iowa (6-12) as Redbirds RHP Michael Wacha pitched seven strong innings.

Scoring: A double sandwiched between two singles gave the Redbirds a 2-0 lead in the second. Iowa cut the lead to 2-1 with a two-out double by Brian Bogusevic followed by a RBI single from Brad Nelson for their only run off Wacha, one of the top pitching prospects for St.Louis and ranked #94 overall for Memphis added two insurance runs in the eighth.

Pitching: Nick Struck (0-2) took the loss but he pitched well enough to win using a mid-90s fastball and a sharp breaking ball for six innings. He allowed five hits, four coming in the two-run second, and walked two. He threw 96 pitches, 63 for strikes, and 10 of his 15 balls in play for outs, were fly outs. Casey Coleman tossed his second straight perfect inning in relief striking out the side in the seventh on 11 pitches. For the second straight game, the Redbirds got to Yoanner Negrin, after the right-hander wasn't scored on his first four games. Memphis scored two runs on three hits in the eighth.

Cubs Notes: Alberto Gonzalez has cleared waivers and been assigned to Iowa. OF Ty Wright was sent from Iowa to Tennessee.

Dunedin 3, Daytona 0

Casey Lawrence shutout the Cubs for eight innings, striking out nine, as Dunedin (14-5) beat Daytona (8-11).

Scoring: The Blue Jays strung together three singles in the fifth for a 1-0 lead and then added two runs in the seventh.

Pitching: After two tough starts (8IP, 16H, 13ER), P.J. Francescon (1-2) got back on track with five quality innings against Dunedin. The righty allowed five hits, two walks, and one earned run but took the loss. Yao-Lin Wang gave up 4 hits and two runs in 1.1 innings with a walk and strikeout. Frank Del Valle fanned four and walked one in the final 1.2 innings.

Cubs Lineup: DeVoss CF (1-4), Saunders 2B (0-4), Baez SS (0-3 BB), Soler RF (0-4), Andreoli LF (1-3), Geiger 1B (0-3), Carhart DH (2-3 2B), Noble C (0-3), Giansanti 3B (0-3).

Daytona Notes: RHP Ryan Searle has been placed on the 7-day disabled list and Anthony Giansanti has joined the team from Tennessee.

Kane County

For the seventh time this season Kane County showed up top play, only to have the game postponed. The Cougars now have four first-half games to make up, two with Wisconsin, one with Beloit, and now one with Peoria. Tomorrow is an off day and then KC embarks on a six-day road trip to Forth Wayne (May 25-27) and Lake County (April 28-30).

Cougar Notes: Based on a tweet from Trey Martin, he may be headed to the disabled list. Martin was replaced in yesterday's game. He missed three games (April 7-9) with a shoulder injury. Martin wis hitting .219……..1B/LF/DH Rock Shoulders leads the MWL in hitting (.410) and OPS (1.158)…..Daniel Vogelbach (.323) is hitting .364 vs. LHP and .302 vs. RHP…...Kane County is hitting MWL best .291…..Catchers Chadd Krist (9-27) and Wilson Contreras (9-29) are hitting a combined .321…..Kane County pitching is 15th in ERA 4.69 and have allowed a league high 96 runs.
