The Chicago Cubs have added OF Ryan Sweeney and RHP Rafael Dolis to Chicago‘s roster and sent OF Dave Sappelt to AAA Iowa and designated RHP Kameron Loe for assignment. Sweeney will take Loe's spot on the 40-man roster.

Sweeney, 28, was signed by the Cubs on April 2 after being waived by the Boston Red Sox. The left-handed hitter played in 63 games for Boston last year (.260/.303/.378) with no homers and 16 RBI. In 23 games at Iowa this year, he has hit six homers with 16 RBI (.337/.396/.627). He's hitting .320 against lefties and .345 vs. right-handers but has only hit .250 in his last seven games. Sweeney was originally drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 2003.

Dolis started the season in Chicago pitching 1/3 of an inning on April 14 in his only appearance. He was optioned to Iowa after the Cubs acquired Loe and Kevin Gregg on April 14. In eight games at Iowa, Dollis had a 3.52 ERA and a .200 BAA. In 7.2 innings he allowed six hits, three runs, three walks and fanned seven.

Loe, signed as a free agent after being released by Seattle, pitched in seven games for the Cubs allowing 12 hits and four walks in 8.1 innings for a 5.40 ERA. He had a BAA of .343.

Sappelt made the club out of spring training despite hitting .193 but the signing of Scott Hairston, along with Sweeney and Brian Bogusevic to minor league deals, put the pressure on Sappelt to perform. In 20 games this year, he's hitting just .178 with nine strikeouts in 45 at-bats. He was used to hit left-handers but was just 8-38 with one walk and seven Ks. Sappelt played in 133 games at Iowa last year before being called to Wrigley in September where he hit .275 in 26 games.

Sappelt announced the news on his twitter account Sunday night while Sweeney told a reporter he had been called to Chicago after being removed from the second game of a double-header for a pinch-runner in the sixth inning. The Cubs made the official roster moves on Monday afternoon, May 6.
