Cubs May 9 Minor League Recap

Daytona snapped a four-game losing streak behind the offense of Javier Baez and Jorge Soler while Iowa and Tennessee both lost. Kane County had their 10th game postponed. Plenty of roster moves in the minors on Thursday.

Daytona 3, Dunedin 2

Daytona (17-16) snapped a four-game losing streak as Javier Baez had a pair of extra base hits and the Cubs' bullpen shut down Dunedin (20-13).

At the Plate: A double by Jorge Soler, a triple from John Andreoli and a single from Dustin Geiger started the second inning for a 2-1 Daytona lead. With two outs in the third, Tim Saunders singled and scored on Javier Baez's RBI double. Daytona took the lead in the sixth on a triple by Baez and a sacrifice fly from Soler.

On the Mound: P.J. Francescon (3-2 4.63 ERA) went five innings in his seventh start and it marked the sixth time he had lasted five innings. He allowed eight hits, one a homer, and fanned four. LHP Jeffrey Lorick (0-0 0.00 ERA) made his season debut after starting the season on the DL and at extended spring training. He retired the side in the sixth and earned the victory. RHP Austin Reed (0-0 7.71) walked a pair in the seventh but got out of the inning without allowing another base runner. LHP Hunter Cervenka (1-0 1.72) eared his third save of the season tossing two shutout innings.

Cubs Notes: The Cubs released catcher Micah Gibbs, a 24-year-old 2010 third round pick out of LSU. He hit .221/330./294 in 192 games his first three seasons and was hitting .163 in 16 games with a homer and 7 RBI…..IF Wes Darvill and C Chadd Krist have been assigned to Daytona from Kane County. Darvill hit .347 in 15 games for the Cougars while Krist has caught 12 games hitting .263…...RHP Starling Peralta (0-1 12.86 ERA) was sent to extended spring training after allowing 19 hits, 7 H, 20 ER in 14 IP……..LHP Jeffrey Lorick, 25, who started the season on the disabled list and at extended spring training, was assigned to Daytona. Lorick was acquired from the Braves in the Derrek Lee trade in Aug. of 2010 and spent last year between Peoria and Daytona. He started 18 games for Daytona in 2011 going 8-6 with a 5.38 ERA.

Oklahoma City 5, Iowa 1

A couple of familiar faces to the Cubs organization helped Colorado Spring (19-13) to the win as RHP Chris Volsted tossed five scoreless innings and D.J. LaMehieu extended his hitting streak to a PCL best 18-games with a homer.

At the Plate: Iowa got seven hits but could only score one run, a solo homer by Darnell McDonald in the seventh. They hit into three double plays and were 0-5 with RISP. Brett Jackson had a pair of hits in his first game off the DL and Ian Stewart flied out in a pinch-hitting role in his first game since being assigned to Iowa.

Cubs Lineup: Watkins 2B (0-4), Jackson LF (2-4), Bogusevic CF (0-2 2BB), Vitters 3B (0-4), Nelson 1B (2-4 2B), Sappelt RF (0-3), Stewart PH (0-1), Gonzalez SS (2-3 BB), Flores C (0-4), Carpenter P (0-2), Darnell McDonald RF 1-1 HR).

On the Mound: RHP Drew Carpenter (1-3 7.33) made his sixth start allowing six hits and three earned runs in five innings. He tied a season-high with six strikeouts and walked one. Carpenter may be the odd man out when relief pitcher Kyuji Fujikawa returns to Chicago's lineup on Friday and a roster spot for a pitcher may be needed at Iowa unless a DL move can be made. RHP Casey Coleman (0-0 4.50) pitched in his eighth game allowing two runs on three hits and two walks. RHP Zach Putnam (0-1 4.05) threw two scoreless innings allowing just one hit while recording a strikeout.

Iowa Notes: OF Brett Jackson has been activated from the 7-day disabled list and SS Edwin Maysonet has been placed on the 7-day DL with a sprained right ankle. Jackson was put on the DL with turf toe on May 4 and hadn't played since April 30….A third of the Sky Sox starting lineup were ex-Cubs—SS D.J. LeMahieu, RF Tyler Colvin, and P Chris Volstad.

Birmingham 9, Tennessee 7

Birmingham (23-10) scored two runs in the top of the ninth to win their tenth straight game and their third straight over Tennessee (15-17) with a 15-hit attack.

At the Plate: Rubi Silva, fifth in the Southern League in total bases, added to that total in the first with a RBI triple scoring Arismendy Alcantara, who was hit by a pitch. Rafael Lopez hit a two-run homer, his second of the season, to put Tennessee ahead 3-2. Jonathan Mota tied the game in the 4th with his second homer and when the Barons botched a run down, Tim Torres scored the go-ahead run. After the Birmingham regained the lead, Elliot Soto ripped a RBI double down the left field line scoring Torres from first to tie the game at 7-7 in the eighth. Lopez, making his first start at DH, extended his hitting streak to seven games and is hitting .409 during the streak with 2HR and 6RBI.

Smokies Lineup: Torreyes 2B (0-4), Alcantara SS (1-4 R), Silva CF(1-5 3B RBI), Wright LF (0-4 BB), Lopez DH (1-4 2R HR 2RBI), Mota RF (1-3 HR 2RBI BB), Torres 1B (3-4 2R 2B), Soto 3B (1-4 2B RBI), Fernandez C (2-3 BB).

On the Mound: RHP Alberto Cabrera (3-1 4.31 ERA) had worked into the sixth inning in his previous six starts, that didn't happen on Thursday as he couldn't cool off the Barons. The White Sox AA team got 13 hits and scored six times as Cabrera issued three walks and fanned five in 4.1 innings. Kevin Rhoderick (0-0 ) made his longest outing of the season working three innings in his ninth game. He gave up one earned run on a hit and two walks. Trey McNutt (1-3 4.80 ERA) lost his third game allowing two runs to score in the ninth on a walk, a double, a throwing error, and a sacrifice fly.

Smokies Notes: The Smokies placed OF Johermyn Chavez on the disabled list and recalled IF Anthony Giansanti from Daytona. Chavez was hit on the arm by a pitch yesterday. He stayed in the game and scored a run. Smokies announcer Mick Gillispie reported Chavez has a broken hand. OF Matt Szczur was also hit in the hand yesterday and didn't play on Thursday.

Kane County

Kane County's game at Burlington was rained out. It was the 10th game canceled due to weather this season for the Cougars. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 5 p.m. It will be the Cougars sixth twin-bill. Right-handers Tayler Scott (1-1, 3.86 ERA) and Felix Pena (1-0 2.37 ERA) are expected to start for Kane County

Cougars Notes: IF David Bote and C Carlos Escobar joined the Cougars on Thursday after being assigned from extended spring training. Bote, a 2012 draft pick, was on the Cougars roster before the season but was sent to Daytona and played in four games before being sent to Mesa. Escobar, a 2012 draft pick out of Nevada, played in 27 games last year between Mesa and Boise after being selected in the 15th round. He started the season on the DL.
