Cubs May 11 Minor League Recap

Cubs pitcher Matt Garza, pictured, made his third rehab start tossing three plus shutout innings in AA. It was a good night for the Cubs' minors as Iowa, Tennessee and Kane County all won. Daytona had their game rained out.

Iowa 4, Reno 1

Guillermo Moscoso pitched his best game of the season and Dave Sappelt hit a two-run homer as Iowa (13-20) downed Reno (12-25)

At the Plate: Dave Sappelt, who was 1-14 since being sent down to Iowa, jacked a two-run homer to left field, scoring Josh Vitters, who opened the second inning with a double. Brett Jackson added a two-run single in the eighth.

On the Mound: RHP Guillermo Moscoso (2-0 1.80 ERA), acquired late in spring training after being released by the Blue Jays, made his third start for the I-Cubs and had his best outing limiting the Aces to one run for seven innings on five hits with seven strikeouts. He threw 106 pitches and walked one hitter for his second win. RHP Zach Putnam allowed a hit and a run in the eight but got a groundout to end the threat. RHP Blake Parker worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his fifth save.

Cubs Notes: Prior to yesterday's game, the Cubs traded RHP Drew Carpenter to the Colorado Rockies for a player to be named later. Carpenter moved over to the Sky Sox dugout one day after starting against them on Thursday. Carpenter (1-4 7.33 ERA) made six starts for the I-Cubs…..Former Cub OF Tony Campana was 0-4 with two strikeouts

Tennessee 5, Birmingham 4

Tennessee (16-18) snapped their seven-game losing streak and also ended Birmingham's (24-11) 11-game winning streak.

At the Plate: The Smokies took the lead in the first as Matt Szczur singled, went to third on Ronald Torreyes' double, and scored on Arismenday Alcantara's sacrifice fly to center. Szczur delivered a two-run single in the fifth and scored on a Baron error as the Smokies scored three times in the fifth. Christian Villanueva added a big insurance run in the bottom of the eight with a RBI double.

On the Mound: Cubs RHP Matt Garza (3.1IP 3H 0R 2BB 2K) faced one of the hottest teams in baseball Saturday at Smokies Park in his third rehab start since going on the DL. He needed 30 pitches in the first inning to put down the Barons as an error, a walk and a single loaded the bases. The inning ended with right fielder Rubi Silva catching a ball against the wall. Garza worked around a leadoff walk in the second making a diving catch on a bunt, and getting two ground ball outs. He allowed a hit in the third and after a single to leadoff the fourth and a fly out, was taken out of the game after 66 pitches. RHP Matt Loosen got his first win of the season working four innings. He walked four, gave up two hits and allowed three runs. Loosen lowered his ERA to 8.04 and recorded six strikeouts in his 82-pitch performance. Marcus Hatley picked up his first save of the year getting two outs in the eight and then allowed a run in the ninth and finished with a line of (1.2IP 2H 1ER 2BB 1K)


The Daytona Cubs and Dunedin Blue Jays twin-bill was canceled due to unplayable field conditions. Since the two teams are not scheduled to play each other again in the first half of the Florida State League season, the games will not be made up.

Kane County 7, Clinton 4

Wilson Contreras had three hits, including his fourth homer, as Kane County (17-15) won its third straight game beating Clinton (15-18).

At the Plate: The Cougars scored an unearned run in first when with two out, Daniel Vogelbach walked and scored as Clinton centerfielder Guillermo Pimentel dropped a fly ball. The Cougars added two more runs in the fourth when Wilson Contreras and Oliver Zapata pulled off a double steal with Contreras taking home. Clinton then dropped their second fly ball of the night allowing Zapata to score. Contreras blasted his fourth homer to lead off the sixth and Gioskar Amaya delivered a go-ahead two-run single. Contreras added an insurance run in the ninth with a RBI single, plating Jeimer Candelario.

Cougars Lineup: Chen LF (2-5 2B), Amaya 2B (1-5 2RBI), Vogelbach 1B (1-4 R 2B), Candelario 3B (1-5 R), Shoulders DH (0-4 BB), Contreras C (3-5 2R 2B HR 2RBI), Rademacher RF (1-4 BB), Bote SS (0-3 2BB), Zapata CF (0-2 2R 2BB).

On the Mound: LHP Michael Heesch (2-2 3.62 ERA) got the win but it was hardly one of his better outings allowing a season-high 12 hits and four runs in six innings. He walked one and didn't record a strikeout for the first time in a start. LHP Brian Smith (2-1 2.60) got an old-fashion save, his first, tossing three scoreless innings allowing a hit and putting three Lumberking hitters down on strikes.

Cougars Notes: Kane County Broadcaster Wayne Randazzo said during the game that Dillon Maples had joined the team and is expected to be the starting pitcher on Sunday. No official roster move has been made.
