Cubs May 20 Minor League Recap

Tennessee's Alberto Cabrera fanned six in a complete-game victory and the right-hander added a RBI double in the split with Chattanooga. Kane County and Daytona lost while Iowa was rained out.

Game 1—Tennessee 9, Chattanooga 2; Game 2— Chattanooga 1, Tennessee, 0

Tennessee (23-20) broke out the bats in the first game and lost the second game on a walk-off wild pitch to Chattanooga (17-27)

Game 1

Tennessee scored seven runs in the fourth inning behind a two-run homer from Christian Villanueva and two-run doubles from Matt Szczur and Arismendy Alcantara.

At the Plate: P Alberto Cabrera knocked in the first run for the Smokies with a RBI double in the third. Tennessee erupted for seven runs in the fourth, the first two coming on Villanueva's third homer of the season. Rubi Silva delivered a RBI double followed by two-run doubles from Szczur and Alcantara. They had seven hits in the inning, four for extra bases, and sent 11 hitters to the plate. Tim Torres drove in Tennessee's final run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

Smokies Lineup: Szczur CF (1-4 2B 2RBI), Torreyes 2B (0-4), Alcantara SS (3-4 2R 2 2B, 2RBI), Villanueva 3B (1-4 HR 2RBI), Lopez C (2-4 R), Torres LF (1-3 RBI), Silva RF (2-4 R 2B, RBI), Mota 1B (1-2 2R), Cabrera P (1-3 2B RBI) On the Mound: Alberto Cabrera (4-1 3.69 ERA) needed only 81 pitches, 55 strikes, to get his fourth win of the season tossing a complete game in the seven-inning first game of the DH. The right-hander fanned six and allowed five hits and two walks.

Game 2

A wild pitch on a strikeout gave the Lookouts a walk-off win in the second game of the doubleheader.

At the Plate: Tennessee had five hits and the only extra base hit came from pitcher Eric Jokisch, a double. They left seven runners on base and were 0-5 with RISP.

On the Mound: Eric Jokisch (3-3 3.47 ERA) had one of his best performances of the season tossing six shutout innings. He allowed three hits, walked one, and fanned five. Jokisch only threw 70 pitches, 52 strikes, and got six ground ball outs. Marcus Hatley (1-2 3.18) allowed a one-out double in the seventh and a wild pitch put the winning run at third. A pair of intentional walks loaded the bases and Hatley fanned the next batter, but strike three was a wild pitch allowing the winning run to score.

Jupiter 4, Daytona 1

Jupiter (24-19) scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth and took the opening game of the series from Daytona (21-21)

At the Plate: Javier Baez's second double of the game plated John Andreoli, who reached on an error and stole second, his 13th. Cubs hitters fanned 15 times against five different Jupiter pitchers.

On the Mound: LHP Kyler Burke made his 2013 debut after staring the season on the disabled list and rehabbing at extended spring training in Mesa. The former outfield turned pitcher, worked five innings allowing a run on four hits, two walks and two hit batters. He fanned five and got five groundouts and four fly outs. Burke, 24, was originally drafted by the Padres and came to Chicago in the Michael Barrett, trade. Burke was an all-star outfielder and former Cubs minor league player of the year before switching to pitching in 2011. Last season he went (2-2 2.31) in 10 starts at Peoria but was (1-7 4.92) at Daytona in 12 games. RHP Eduardo Figueroa (0-3 5.09 ERA) tossed two scoreless innings but took the loss allowing three runs, four hits, a walk and a wild pitch in the eighth. LHP Sheldon McDonald got the final two outs but gave up a single scoring a run that was charged to Figueroa.

Cedar Rapids 8, Kane County 7

Jeimer Candelario had four hits and knocked in two runs but it wasn't enough as Cedar Rapids (30-13) downed Kane County (20-22).

At the Plate: Kane County manufactured three runs in the third on just three hits, all singles. Jeimer Candelario led off with a infield single and took second on a walk to Rock Shoulders. Wilson Contreras bounced a single up the middle scoring Candelario and Bijan Rademacher followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Shoulders. Marco Hernandez singled to send Contreras to third and then Oliver Zapata's fielder's choice groundout plated Contreras. With two out in the fourth, the Cougars loaded the bases and Daniel Vogelbach delivered a two-run single for a 5-3 lead. Candelario added RBI singles in the sixth and ninth, two of his four hits on the day as he raised his average to .267, extending his hitting streak to six games. The right-handed hitting third baseman is batting .440 during the streak.

On the Mound: Tayler Scott (2-1 3.30 ERA) went 5.1 IP allowing a season-high eight hits and five runs, four earned. The right-hander walked two, fanned four, and allowed his second homer of the season. LHP Nathan Dorris (1-2 3.32) was charged with his first blown save as well as the loss as he gave up three runs on three hits and three walks in 1.2 innings. RHP Stephen Perakslis (0-2 4.79) worked a scoreless eighth.

Cougars Notes: Twitter was a buzz Monday afternoon as Albert Almora's extended spring training teammates were wishing him well at Kane County. No official roster move has been made and may not come until May 22 as the Cougars have tomorrow off. Almora broke his hamate bone during spring training and has been rehabbing in Mesa. …..Manager Mark Johnson told Kevin Druley of the Kane County Chronicle that OF Trey Martin will miss the rest of the season after having left shoulder surgery to correct a recurring labrum problem. Johnson said Martin's shoulder had been "popping out pretty consistent. Its something he needed to take care of." Martin played in 11 games hitting (.200/.286/.257) and went 3-4 with a double, RBI, stolen base and a run scored against Peoria, two days before going on the DL on April 25.


The I-Cubs game was canceled due to rain and they will play a doubleheader tomorrow against Las Vegas at 12:05 p.m. CST.
