Cubs May 25 Minor League Recap

Rock Shoulders hit a pair of homers and leads the Midwest League with 12 as Kane County swept a DH from Beloit. Iowa and Daytona both won while Tennessee lost to Huntsville.

Iowa 7, Oklahoma City 3

Iowa (21-25) pounded out 11 hits and Brooks Raley had a good outing to lead the Cubs over Oklahoma City (27-21) for the second straight night.

At the Plate: The I-Cubs loaded the bases in the second and Luis Flores brought home a pair with his second double of the season. A Logan Watkins grounder plated the third run of the inning and Flores scored on a well placed two-out bunt single by Brian Bogusevic. Edwin Maysonet smacked his third homer of the year, a two-run shot to put Iowa ahead 6-2 in the sixth. Iowa added another run in the eighth.

On the Mound: Brooks Raley (4-3 4.53 ERA) had a quality start working into the seventh inning with six strikeouts. The lefty threw 102 pitches and allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits and two walks. Casey Coleman earned his first save retiring the first seven hitter he faced before a two-out walk in the ninth. Coleman had one strikeout and got four groundouts in his 37 pitch performance.

Cubs Notes: The I-Cubs placed Esmailin Caridad on the disabled list and Tennessee's Marcus Hatley was assigned to AAA Iowa.

Huntsville 7, Tennessee 2

Huntsville (22-26) held Tennessee (24-23) to three hits and scored in five straight innings for the win.

At the Plate: The Smokies only got two hits and the only runs of the game came on a two-run homer from Arismindy Alcantara in the fifth.

On the Mound: Alberto Cabrera (4-2 3.92 ERA) fanned seven but struggled with his location throwing 100 pitches in six innings as he took the loss. He allowed six hits, five runs, four earned, and walked three. A.J.Morris (2-0 6.38) surrendered two earned runs on three hits in 1.1 innings while Brian Schlitter (0-2 .83 ERA) held Huntsville over the final 1.2.

Smokies Notes: The Cubs organization cut Tennessee catcher Jair Hernandez and promoted C Chad Noble from Daytona.

Daytona 5, Lakeland 4

Tim Saunders hit a three-run homer and Daytona (24-23) hung on to beat Lakeland (18-30) snapping their five-game home losing streak.

At the Plate: The Cubs loaded the bases in the second with a double by Jorge Soler, a walk to Dustin Geiger, and a single by Chadd Krist. Taiwan Easterling drove home a pair with a single to left and Saunders cleared the bases with his first of the season, a three-run shot. Javier Baez had his ten-game hitting streak snapped.

On the Mound: LHP Kyler Burke (1-0 .90 ERA) made his second impressive outing allowing a hit and two walks in five shutout innings. He fanned two and got seven ground ball outs in his first win. Burke started the season on the DL and joined the Cubs making his first start May 20. RHP Eduardo Figueroa allowed three hits and a run working 1.1 innings. Hunter Cervenka looked like he was on his way to his sixth save of the season but couldn't close out the ninth as Lakeland scored three times with the first four hitters reaching base. Cervenka (1-0 2.91) walked two, gave up two hits, and fanned three. Luis Lira allowed a hit and walk in the ninth but got the final three outs for his second save of the season.

Game 1—Kane County 4, Beloit 3; Game 2— Kane County 7, Beloit 4

Albert Almora provided the offense in the first game and Rock Shoulders blasted a pair of homers in the second as Kane County (23-24) swept Beloit (28-20).

Game 1

At the Plate: It was the Albert Almora show as the 19-year-old outfielder scored the first run, knocked in the next two, and stepped on home with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh, going 3-4 with two doubles. It was his third three-hit game. Almora reached on a two-base error and scored on Daniel Vogelbach's RBI single in the third. Oliver Zapata and Pin-Chieh Chen singled to leadoff the fifth, and after a wild pitch, scored on Almora's double. Almora's third hit of the day, a single, led off the seventh and took third on Vogelbach's double. After an intentional walk to Jeimer Candelario, Bijan Rademacher hit a fly ball to center and Almora scored the winning run.

On the Mound: Nathan Dorris (2-2 2.91 ERA) got the win tossing 2.2 innings of scoreless relief. He allowed two singles and fanned three Snappers. The Southern Illinois product had walked five and allowed five hits in 3 innings in his previous two games. Jose Rosario made his second start pitching into the fifth inning. The 22-year-old right-hander yielded five hits, three walks, and three runs, two earned.

Game 2

At the Plate: Almora was right back at it in game two as he got hit by a pitch in the first and scored on Vogelbach's RBI double. Zapata stroked a two-run double in the second and scored on a wild pitch and a throwing error by the catcher. Rock Shoulders hit his MWL leading 11th homer in the third to put Kane County up 5-2. The left-handed power hitter wasn't done adding a two-run blast in the fifth.

On the Mound: Ian Dickson improved to 2-2 on the season allowing just a single and a walk in three innings of relief. The right-hander fanned four in his ninth game of the season. For the second time this season, LHP Brian Smith (2-1 3.42) got the start, yielding four runs on three hits and two walks. Smith gave up a pair of homers and fanned two. MWL hitters are batting just .224 against Smith.
