Cubs May 26 Minor League Recap

Iowa swept Oklahoma City in a doubleheader Sunday afternoon and the Cubs AAA affiliate have won eight of their last nine games. Eric Jokisch had a good outing and Frank Batista earned his 6th save in Tennessee's win while Daytona and Kane County got beat.

Game 1—Iowa 2, Oklahoma City 1; Game 2—Iowa 4, Oklahoma City 3

Iowa got homers from Edwin Maysonet and Donnie Murphy to help with a sweep of Oklahoma City.

Game 1

At the Plate: Edwin Maysonet doubled and scored in the third on a sacrifice fly from Logan Watkins and then hit his fourth homer of the season in the fifth to account for Iowa's two runs.

On the Mound: Barret Loux (3-2 6.29) had his longest outing of the season tossing six innings of three-hit ball with three walks and six punchouts. Loux threw 106 pitches, 65 for strikes and allowed one earned run. RHP Blake Parker (0-1 2.16) worked a perfect seventh for his seventh save. He fanned one and now has 23 K in 16.2 IP.

Game 2

Donnie Murphy blasted a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth to break a 3-3 game and give Iowa the sweep.

At the Plate: Watkins got Iowa started in the first with his fifth homer of the season. The iI-Cubs loaded the bases with singles by Brian Bogusevic and Brad Nelson and a walk to Dave Sappelt. Donnie Murphy was hit by a pitch to force in a run and then Red Hawks pitcher Phillip Humber plunked Edwin Maysonet for a 3-0 lead. After Oklahoma City tied the game, Donnie Murphy took a pitch over the left field wall for the game-winner.

On the Mound: Yoanner Negrin (0-1 2.73) worked into the fifth inning in his first start of the year after making 14 relief appearances. He threw 79 pitches allowing two runs on two hits and three walks. He fanned five and now has 42 in 33.1 IP. Marcus Hatley (1-0 5.40) got the final two outs of the fifth but allowed the tying run to score in the sixth. Hatley got the win in his first game at Iowa after pitching in 14 games at AA Tennessee. Zach Putnam (1-1 3.26) worked a perfect seventh for his fourth save.

Tennessee 5, Huntsville 2

LHP Eric Jokisch earned his fourth win of the season and Tim Torres blasted a two-run homer as Tennessee (25-23) beat Huntsville (22-27).

At the Plate: The Smokies took a 2-0 lead in second on a double by Christian Villanueva and a home run from Tim Torres, his second. Arismendy Alcantara walked, went to third on a Ty Wright single, and scored on Villanueva's ground out. After Huntsville cut the lead to 3-2, Tennessee added two more runs in the seventh on back-to-back doubles by Jonathan Mota and Matt Szczur and a sacrifice fly from Ronald Torreyes. Tennessee had 10 hits in the game and drew one walk.

On the Mound: LHP Eric Jokisch (4-3 3.44 ERA) seems to be back on track with his third straight quality start earning his fourth win of the season. He fanned six in 5.2 frames allowing seven hits and two earned runs. Trey McNutt (2-4 5.23) fanned three hitters in his inning of work and Zach Rosscup (1-0 1.29) recorded his 7th hold of the year tossing 1.1 innings with a walk and two strikeouts. Frank Batista (1-2 2.14) worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his 6th save of the season.

Lakeland 5, Daytona 3

At the Plate: Jorge Soler hit his seventh homer of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth. The Cubs added a run in the eighth on a RBI single by John Andreoli. Zeke DeVoss had three hits and Chadd Krist had a two hits and is hitting .311 since joining Daytona.

On the Mound: P.J. Francescon's roller coaster ride in his second season in the Florida State League continues as the right-hander surrendered four runs in six innings on six hits and three walks. He matched his season-high with six strikeouts and is 3-4 with a 5.37 ERA. Yao-Lin Wang made his first appearance since going on the DL in April getting four outs, two on strikeouts. He was charged with one earned run and walked a hitter. Jeffrey Lorick worked 1.1 innings of shutout ball but allowed a run scoring double in the eighth.

Cubs Notes: Yao-Ling Wang (1-0 2.19 ERA) has been activated from the disabled list. The right-hander from Taiwan pitched in four games before going on the DL with 12K in 12 IP and a BA of .196

Beloit 6, Kane County 5

Beloit (29-20) scored four runs with two outs in the top of the sixth to beat Kane County (23-25).

At the Plate: Kane County faced 20-year-old Raul Alcantara, considered one of the top pitching prospects in the A's organization. Pin-Chieh Chen opened the game with a walk, stole second, went to third on Albert Almora's fly ball, and scored on Daniel Vogelbach's ground out. Gioskar Amaya tied the game in the third with his first homer of the season. Amaya has shown some power in recent games with two triples and three doubles in his last 10 games. Bijan Rademacher, Wilson Contreras and Macro Hernandez all singled to score a run in the fourth and a throwing error allowed Contreras to trot home. Another Vogelbach groundout scored Chen in the fifth for a 5-2 lead. After the Cougars got five runs and seven hits off Alcantara but the Beloit bullpen closed the door allowing just two hits over the final four innings.

Cougars Lineup: Chen LF (2-4 2R BB), Almora CF (2-5), Vogelbach 1B (0-5 2 RBI), Shoulders DH (0-3 BB), Rademacher RF (1-4 R), Contreras C (1-3 R), Hernandez SS (RBI), Amaya 2B ( HR RBI), Bote 3B (0-3).

On the Mound: Tayler Scott (2-1 3.65 ERA) got two outs in the sixth but ended up with a no-decision allowing six hits and three walks. He was charged with four earned runs and fanned two. Eduardo Orozco (2-3 5.17) came into the game with runners on first and third with two outs but surrendered four straight hits as Beloit grabbed a 6-5 lead. His final line was (2.1IP, 4H, 2ER, 1BB, 2K). Jeffry Antigua (2-1 2.78) pitched a scoreless ninth and has not allowed a run for seven innings. He has 13 strikeouts during the streak.
