Cubs May 29 Minor League Recap

Zach Cates and Yao-Lin Wang combined to blank Tampa Wednesday night as Daytona was the only Cubs affiliate to win. Tennessee fell to Birmingham in the 18th annual Rickwood Classic.

Nashville 4, Iowa 3

Nashville (15-36) jumped out to a 4-2 lead after two innings and hung on for the win over Iowa (24-27)

At the Plate: Iowa cut the lead in half in the fourth on a RBI double by Dave Sappelt and aa Dave Nelson RBI single. Iowa added another run in the fifth as Logan Watkins single, scoring J.C. Boscan.

On the Mound: Nick Struck (6.07 ERA) is still trying to find his groove in AAA as the right-hander allowed eight hits and two walks in five innings. He was charged with four earned runs and fanned three. Casey Coleman walked two but that was it in his three innings of scoreless relief. Coleman had a strikeout and threw 51 pitches, 29 for strikes.

Birmingham 6, Tennessee 3

Birmingham (33-19) came out on top of Tennessee (27-24) in the 18th annual Rickwood Classic.

At the Plate: The Smokies got all their runs in the sixth, two scoring on Christian Villanueva's 17th double of the season. Catcher Lance Rymel made his first hit of the season count, a single that knocked in Villanueva.

On the Mound: The Barons chased starting pitcher Yeiper Castillo in the fourth as the right-hander allowed three hits, two walks, and the defense added a throwing error that scored a run. Castillo (0-1 4.66) fanned four in his second start at AA. His line for the day was (3.2 IP, 5H 5 R 4ER 2B 4K). A.J. Morris (0-0 5.82 fanned five, a season high, in 3.1 IP. He allowed three hits and a run. Trey McNutt (2-4 4.98) tossed a scoreless frame with a punchout.

Smokies Notes: Wednesday's game was the 18th annual Rickwood Classic, a Barons game played once a year at Birmingham's Rickwood Field, the oldest in-use ball park in America. The Barons wore the 1948 Birmingham Black Baron uniforms while the Smokies donned the Knoxville Giants uniforms of 1935-36 to honor the Negro Leagues. Hall of Famer and former Cubs ace Fergie Jenkins was in attendance.

Daytona 3, Tampa 0

Zach Cates and Yoa-Lin Wang combined to shutout Tampa (21-29) as Daytona (21-29) won for the second straight night.

At the Plate: The Cubs got two-out singles from Taylor Davis, Zeke DeVoss and John Andreoli as Davis scored on Andreoli's hit in the third. DeVoss led of the sixth with a single and took third on Andreoli's double. Javier Baez knocked DeVoss home with a sacrifice fly and Dustin Geiger added a run scoring single.

Cubs Lineup: DeVoss CF (2-4 R), Andreoli LF (2-3 R 2B RBI), Baez SS (0-3 RBI), Soler RF (1-4), Geiger 1B (1-3), Carhart 3B (0-3), Darvill 2B (1-3 2B), Saunders 3B (0-2), Davis C (1-3 R).

On the Mound: Zach Cates (5-5 4.38 ERA) fanned five and walked one as the right-hander tossed six shutout innings allowing five hits. It snapped a streak of four tough outings for Cats and the third time he has pitched five or more innings of scoreless baseball to start a game. Making just this second appearance since returning from the DL, Yao-Lin Wang (1-0 2.12) fanned five in three innings allowing a hit and a walk. The right-hander from Taiwan earned his second save of the year and has 19 Ks in 17 IP.

Quad Cities 2, Kane County 0

Quad Cities (29-23) hit a pair of solo homers to beat Kane County (24-27)

At the Plate: Marco Hernandez reached on an error in the ninth and scored on Carlos Escobar's RBI single for the Cougars only run of the night. Oliver Zapata extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a single but the Cougars could only manage four hits.

On the Mound: Pierce Johnson (3-4 2.89 ERA) has another good outing fanning seven in 5.2 inning but allowed a solo homer in the sixth, one of four hits. He walked one and it was the second homer allowed. Justin Amlung (3-2 4.11) also gave up a solo homer in the sixth and then tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless ball. He allowed four hits and had two strikeouts.
