Cubs June 2 Minor League Recap

LHP Austin Kirk won his six straight road game as Daytona blanked Brevard County 5-0 in a rain-shortened game. Kane County got a walk-off walk to down Cedar Rapids 3-2 in 10 innings and Iowa fell 5-3. Tennessee was rained out and will play a twin bill tomorrow with Jackson.

New Orleans 5, Iowa 3

New Orleans (27-29) battered Cubs pitching for 13 hits and beat Iowa (24-31) for the second straight game.

At the Plate: The Cubs took a 2-1 lead in the third on a sacrifice fly by Brett Jackson and a RBI doubled by Brett Lillibridge. Logan Watkins plated the I-Cubs third run of the game in the seventh with a RBI single, scoring Luis Flores.

Cubs Lineup: Watkins 2B (1-4 RBI), Sappelt CF (2-4 R), Jackson LF (0-2 RBI BB), Lillibridge 1B (1-4 2B RBI), Murphy SS (0-4), Bogusevic RF (1-4), Flores C (1-4 R), Stewart 3B (0-4), Rusin P (1-2 R), McDonald PH (0-1), Nelson PH (1-1).

On the Mound: Chris Rusin (4-5 3.82 ERA) made his tenth start of the season and threw 90 pitches in his seven innings. Rusin allowed 12 hits and five earned run with no walks and four strikeouts. RHP Michael Bowden, who has spent the past two years in Chicago's bullpen, made his Iowa debut allowing a hit and a walk in 1.2 innings. Bowden threw 40 pitches, 27 for strikes, and fanned three. RHP Casey Coleman got the final out in the ninth.

Tennessee

Tennessee's game with Jackson was rained out and will be made up as a doubleheader tomorrow with first pitch at 5 p.m. EST. at Smokies Park.

Daytona 5, Brevard County 0—7 innings

Daytona scored three times in the first inning and got a good pitching performance from Austin Kirk to defeat Brevard County in a game ended after 6.5 innings by rain.

At the Plate: Tim Saunders and Ben Carhart led off the game with walks and Saunders came home as Javier Baez continued his hot hitting, delivering a RBI single. Jorge Soler made it 2-0 with a RBI single of his own and Baez scored as Brevard County uncorked two wild pitches. Daytona added a run in the sixth on a double by Dustin Geiger and a sacrifice fly from Wes Darvill. Soler added a RBI groundout in the seventh

Cubs Lineup: Saunders CF (0-3 R BB), Carhart 3B (2-3 2R BB), Baez SS (2-4 R RBI), Soler RF (1-3 2RBI), Geiger 1B (1-4 R 2B), Krist C (0-2 BB), Darvill 2B (0-2 BB), Easterling LF (0-2 BB), Davis DH (0-2 BB).

On the Mound: LHP Austin Kirk improved to 6-0 on the road as the left-hander tossed six shutout innings allowing five hits and three walks. Kirk fanned seven and lowered his ERA to .4.50. He is 0-2 at home with a 7.41 ERA in five starts.

Kane County 3, Cedar Rapids 2—10 innings

A bases loaded walk in the bottom of the tenth gave Kane County (25-29) the win over Cedar Rapids (35-20).

At the Plate: Kane County got on the scoreboard in the third as Daniel Vogelbach launched his eighth homer of the year with the bases empty. Vogelbach doubled in the sixth, went to third on a fly ball, and scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Albert Almora doubled with one out in the 10th and after an intentional walk to Vogelbach, took third on a single by Jeimer Candelario. Rock Shoulders then followed with a free pass as Almora crossed home with the winning run. Almora went 3-4 and is now hitting .475 with six multi-hit games in his first ten MWL contests.

Cougars Lineup: Chen LF (0-4 BB), Almora CF (3-4 R 2B BB), Vogelbach DH (2-4 2R HR RBI), Candelario 3B (3-5), Shoulders 1B (0-3 RBI 2BB), Hernandez SS (1-4), Amaya 2B (1-4), Contreras C (0-4), Zapata RF (0-4).

On the Mound: LHP Michael Heesch (2-4 4.00 ERA) had a decent outing allowing two runs on seven hits as both runs scored in the second. The inning could have been worse but a line drive double play and a throw to home by Pin-Chieh Chen nailing a Kernal's runner helped out Heesch. He walked two and fanned four in the no-decision. Steve Perakslis (1-2 3.41) ran his scoreless streak to 11.1 innings as the right-hander tossed three scoreless frames of relief. Perakslis yielded two hits, one walk and recorded three strikeouts. Eddie Orozco (3-3 4.58) got the victory in relief as the righty worked a perfect 10th inning with a strikeout.

Cougars Notes: The switch-hitting Oliver Zapata had his 12-game hitting streak come to an end on Sunday
