Cubs June 4 Minor League Recap

Daytona's Ben Wells and Frank Del Valle combined to shutout Bradenton, Tennessee rallied to beat Jackson for the third straight game, and Iowa blasted three homers in their win over New Orleans. Kane County had the day off. FSL all stars and Junior Lake makes 2013 debut Thursday.

Iowa 10, New Orleans 2

Iowa (25-32) hit three homers and scored seven runs in the fifth to defeat New Orleans (28-30) Tuesday afternoon at Principal Park in Des Moines.

At the Plate: Brad Nelson, Ian Stewart and Brian Bogusevic all homered for the I-Cubs in the 14-hit attack against the Zephyrs. Iowa scored seven times in the fifth as Nelson hit a three-run bomb and Stewart followed with his first homer of the season. Brett Jackson drove in the first two runs with a bases loaded single and the other run scored on Dave Sappelt's fielder's choice grounder. A New Orleans error allowed a run in the sixth and Bogusevic added a two-run homer in the eighth, his sixth. Logan Watkins had three hits and scored twice.

Cubs Lineup: Watkins 2B (3-5 2R), Bogusevic RF (2-4 2R HR 3RBI BB), Jackson (1-5), Sappelt (0-5 R RBI), Clevenger C (2-4 R 2B), Nelson 1B (2-4 R HR 3RBI), Stewart 3B (1-4 HR RBI), Murphy SS (0-4), Raley (1-1), Coleman (1-2), McDonald PH (1-1 R 2B).

On the Mound: Brooks Raley (4-4 4.27) made his 11th start but left the game in the fourth inning after getting hit with a line drive in the left bicep. Raley allowed a run on three hits and a walk, throwing 51 pitches. He fanned two and got five ground ball outs. Casey Coleman (1-0 2.43) made the most of his emergency appearance getting the win with 3.2 innings of shutout baseball. He only allowed one hit and fanned two in his 48-pitch effort. Marcus Hatley (0-0 10.13) surrendered a run on two hits and Alex Burnett, who recently cleared waivers and was assigned from Chicago, pitched a scoreless ninth in his first appearance for the I-Cubs.

Cubs Notes: Cubs manager told the Des Moines Register's Tommy Birch today that Junior Lake is expected to join the team on Thursday. Lake was injured in early March with a stress fracture of his upper right rib cage. He's been rehabbing in Mesa and recently started participating in extended spring training games.

Tennessee 8, Jackson 6

Tennessee (31-26) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh and defeated Jackson (23-30) for the third straight game.

At the Plate: Tennessee pounded Jackson pitching for 15 hits as Ty Wright and Ronald Torreyes both hit homers. The Smokies scored four runs in the second on a two-run double by Matt Szczur and Torreyes' second homer. Wright hit a solo blast in the fifth as Chad Noble, Szczur, and Arismendy Alcantara all knocked in runs in the three-run seventh. Noble finished the game with four hits while Alcantara and Szczur both had three hits.

On the Mound: Hunter Cervenka (1-0 11.457) got his first AA win tossing 1.2 innings of relief. The lefty allowed a hit and fanned two, throwing 20 pitches, 16 for strikes. Frank Batista (1-2 1.78) earned his 8th save getting the final out of the eighth and retiring the Generals in the ninth on a hit. Yeiper Castillo (0-1 6.32) made his third start at AA allowing six runs on six hits and three walks. He threw 98 pitches, 62 for strikes, and fanned four.

Daytona 1, Bradenton 0

Ben Wells and Frank Del Valle combined to blank Bradenton (23-25) Tuesday night at McKechnie Field, the spring training home of the Pirates.

At the Plate: The only run of the game came in the top of the sixth when Yaniel Cabezas walked and took second on a wild pitch. Tim Saunders singled to send Cabezas to third and Javier Baez was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Jorge Soler lifted a ball to right field and Cabezas tagged and scored.

On the Mound: Ben Wells (4-4 3.66 ERA) had his best start since April 15, his first outing of the year, as the right-hander tossed five shutout innings. He threw 82 pitches, 49 for strikes, allowing two hits and three walks. He fanned four and got eight ground ball outs in the win. Frank Del Valle (3-1 2.86) tossed four scoreless frames to get the save. The lefty allowed four hits and two hits with four strikeouts.

Cubs Notes: OF Jorge Soler, SS Javier Baez, 1B Dustin Geiger, and OF John Andreoli were all named to the Florida State League All-Star game.

Kane County

Had the day off and start their final road trip of the first half playing three games at Burlington (June 5-7) and three more in Cedar Rapids (June 8-10).
