Cubs June 6 Minor League Recap

On the day Chicago drafted a power hitting third baseman with the second overall pick, the Cubs minor league teams scored one run in 32 innings. Tennessee was swept in a doubleheader by Jackson while Iowa and Kane County were both shutout. Junior Lake made his 2013 debut for Iowa

Round Rock 6, Iowa 0

Iowa (25-33) managed only four hits as Round Rock (34-26) shutout the I-Cubs at Principal Park

At the Plate: Three of the Cubs hits were doubles by Logan Watkins, Steve Clevenger and Donnie Murphy. They left seven on base and were 0-8 with RISP.

On the Mound: Guillermo Moscoso (2-3 4.74) worked six innings allowing five walk and three hits. He was charged with three earned runs and fanned five, throwing 103 pitches. Michael Bowden allowed four hits and three runs in 1.2 IP in his second game with Iowa. Eduardo Sanchez walked two in 1.1 scoreless innings.

Cubs Notes: Junior Lake made his 2013 debut after a rib cage injury delayed the start of his season. The right-handed hitting infielder had a single in his first at-bat but grounded out and then flew out in his final two plate appearances.

Game 1—Jackson 5, Tennessee 0; Game 2—Jackson 2, Tennessee 1

Jackson (25-31) got some revenge on Tennessee (31-28) on Thursday sweeping a doubleheader at Smokies Park.

Game 1

At the Plate: Tennessee was held to four hits in the seven inning opener. Chad Noble and Matt Szczur each had a double.

Smokies Lineup: Szczur CF (1-4 2B), Ronald Torreyes DH (0-3), Alcantara SS (1-2 BB), Wright LF (0-3), Villanueva (0-2 BB), Giansanti RF (0-2 BB), Noble 1-3 2B), Mota (1-3), Soto (0-3)

On the Mound: The Generals had Alberto Cabrera's number getting base hits on his first three pitches. The right-hander allowed 10 hits in five innings with three walks and two strikeouts. Cabrera (5-3 4.08) threw 91 pitches and allowed a homer. Trey McNutt and Zach Rosscup each worked a scoreless inning.

Game 2

At the Plate: The Smokies had eight hits but left seven on base while going 2-8 with RISP. Tennessee scored it sonly run of the day in the bottom of the sixth as Ronald Torreyes led of with a double and took third on Ty Wright's single. Rafael Lopez followed with a base hit but Jackson's reliever got two groundouts to end the threat.

Smokies Lineup: Szczur CF (0-3 BB), Torreyes 2B (2-3 R 2B BB), Alcantara SS (0-3), Wright (1-3), Lopez C (2-3 RBI), Villanueva 3B (0-3), Silva RF (1-3), Giansanti LF (1-3), Mota 1B (1-3)

On the Mound: Eric Jokisch had a good outing allowing four hits and two walks in a complete game, seven-inning, 85-pitch performance. He fanned six and only one of the runs was earned.


Daytona's double-header with Bradenton was rained out due to a tropical storm and since the two teams don't play again during the first half, the games will not be made up.

Burlington 9, Kane County 0

Burlington (22-31) pitching held Kane County (26-31) to six hits as the Bees blanked the Cougars

At the Plate: The Cougar got six hits, two off the bat of Jeimer Candelario.

Cougars Lineup: Amaya 2B (0-4), Almora CF (1-4), Vogelbach 1B (0-4), Candelario 3B (2-4), Shoulders (0-2 BB), Rosario (PH (1-1), Edcobar C (0-3), Rademacher RF (1-4), Golden LF (0-3), Hernandez SS (1-3 2B)

On the Mound: Jose Rosario (0-2 4.42 ERA) allowed five runs, only one earned, on five hits and three walks in five innings. Brian Smith (2-1 3.90) was charged with four earned runs in three innings on five hits. Rosario had two strikeouts while Smith got three.
