AAA—Omaha 3, Iowa 1
Omaha (30-37) scored two runs in the top of the fourth and hung on for the win over Iowa (32-37).
At the Plate: The I-Cubs only had five hits and the only run came on Edwin Maysonet's 6th homer of the season in the first. Iowa was 0-10 with RISP.
On the Mound: For the fifth straight start Guillermo Moscoso (2-5 4.88) allowed three earned runs as the right-hander gave up five hits and walked one. He threw 100 pitches, 60 for strikes, and fanned four. Hisanori Takahashi, Michael Bowden and Marcus Hatley combined to toss four no-hit innings with four strikeouts in relief.
AA—Mississippi 4, Tennessee 1
Mississippi (38-31) broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the eighth to beat Tennessee (33-35)
At the Plate: The Smokies only run of the game came in the second when Rubi Silva and Christian Villanueva had back-to-back singles and Silva scored on Rafael Lopez's groundout. Tennessee got seven hits in the game but were 0-7 with runners in scoring position.
On the Mound: A. J. Morris (2-0 4.08) tossed one-hit ball for four innings, although he did walk three, throwing 69 pitches in his best outing of the season. In his fourth game at AA since arriving from Daytona, Yeiper Castillo (0-1 5.56) surrendered a run in three innings with two hits, a walk, and three punchouts. Hunter Cervenka (1-1 7.36) hadn't allowed a run in his past four games but the Braves scored three times off the left-hander on a walk and three hits. He finished (2IP, 3H, 3ER, 1BB, 3K)
The Cubs had the day off and will head to Clearwater on Monday for the final three-game series of the first-half. Daytona is in a battle for first place in the North Division, as Dunedin leads the Cubs by 1 game. Low A—Kane County 4, Wisconsin 2
Pierce Johnson went seven innings, the longest outing of his career, holding Wisconsin scoreless and helping Kane County win the final game of the first half.
At the Plate: Reggie Golden got the Cougars on the board in the third with his second bomb at Fifth Bank Ballpark, a long blast to left field. Golden also tripled in a run in the three-run fourth. After missing most of 2012 with a knee injury, the outfielder has played in 12 games since joining Kane County, hitting .295/.340/.523. Rock Shoulders hit his MWL leading 13th homer to start a two-out rally in the fourth. Gioskar Amaya singled, scored on Carlos Escobar's double, and then Golden tripled. It was Shoulders first homer since he hit a pair in the second game of a DH with Beloit on May 25. Shoulders went 2-4 and is hitting (.264/367/.489). Albert Almora's 13-game hitting streak came to an end and it was only the third time he hadn't got a hit in 22 games.
On the Mound: Pierce Johnson (5-5, 3.15 ERA, 1.29 WHIP) made his team-leading 13th start as the right-hander, taken in the first round in 2012 out of Missouri State, was looking to break a string of two poor outings. Johnson got back on track tossing a career-high seven shutout frames allowing four hits and three walks. He fanned five and has 73 K in 69.2 innings. Nathan Dorris' nine inning scoreless streak came to an end on Sunday as the left-hander allowed two runs on two hits and two walks in one inning. Stephen Perakslis (1-2 2.97 ERA) allowed a hit and a walk in the ninth but kept the Rattlers off the board to earn his third save. The right-hander hasn't allowed an earned run since May 14, a stretch of eight games and 16.2 innings.
Cougars Notes: The Cougars end the first half at 30-36, 11 games behind first-place Cedar Rapids.
Short-Season—Boise 5, Eugene 2
RF OF Yasiel Balaguert knocked in four runs and the Boise (2-1) pitching staff turned in another quality performance as the Hawks downed Eugene (1-2) to take the opening series.
At the Plate: Balaguert had four RBI and put the game away with a bases-loaded triple in the eighth. Boise got on the board in the fifth when C Lance Rymel smoked a double to left-center scoring DH Rony Rodriguez, who reached when he was hit by a pitch. The Hawks grabbed a two-run lead in the seventh on a RBI single by 3B Daniel Lockhart and a sacrifice fly by Rymel. Rodriguez doubled after Balaguert walked to lead off the 7th. Boise added two more runs in the eighth after loading the bases with no one out on a RBI single by Balaguert and a passed ball. CF Kevin Encarnacion (.364) had a pair of singles, a walk, and a stolen base.
On the Mound: Different starter, same results—no runs. RHP Loiger Padron worked 4.2 innings in his first start of the season allowing three hits and three walks. He fanned three and RHP Carlos Martinez came in to get the final out of the fifth. Martinez, a 23-year-old free agent from Cuba, got the win working 1.2 innings, allowing a run on two hits. LHP Matt Iannazzo allowed a homer in the eighth and after two more hits RHP Michael Hamann came on and got the final five outs for the Hawks for his first save.
