Cubs June 20 Minor League Recap

Iowa, Tennessee and Daytona all won Thursday night while Kane County and Mesa dropped their games.

AAA—Iowa 6, Nashville 4

RF Brian Bogusevic had four hits and scored twice to help Iowa (36-38) beat Nashville (25-48).

At the Plate: Bogusevic led an 11-hit attack with a double and a RBI. 3B Junior Lake and SS Donnie Murphy both had three hits and two RBI. LF Dave Sappelt added a RBI triple in the seventh.

On the Mound: Yoanner Negrin (2-2 3.79 ERA) worked eight innings throwing 97 pitches, 63 for strikes, to earn his second win of the season. He gave up four runs on nine hits and two walks but fanned seven. Brian Schlitter (0-0 1.54) tossed a scoreless ninth for his fifth save.

AA—Tennessee 3, Chattanooga 2

Tennessee (2-0) made the most of their six hits and hung on to beat Chattanooga (0-2) for their second straight win of the second half.

At the Plate: Arismendy Alcantara (.283) continued his offensive power surge with a one-out triple and scored on a wild pitch in the first. Austin Kirk helped his own cause with a RBI single in the fifth, driving in Chad Noble, who doubled. After the Smokies loaded the bases in the seventh, Ja-Hoon Ha's ground out scored Ronald Torreyes with the deciding run.

On the Mound: Austin Kirk (1-1 4.86) got his first AA win of 2013 as the left-hander tossed 5.2 innings of one-hit shutout baseball. He did walk four but fanned a season-high eight hitters on 86 pitches. Tony Zych (2-3 2.97) held the Lookouts scoreless for 1.1 innings. Trey McNutt (2-5 4.45) allowed a run in the eighth and despite giving up three hits and and arun in the ninth, Frank Batista (2-2 3.18) got the final otu on strieks for his 10th save.

High A—Daytona 4, Dunedin 0

Matthew Loosen and Jeffrey Lorick combined to blank the first-half champs as Daytona (1-0) opened the second half with a win over Dunedin (0-1).

At the Plate: Daytona didn't waste any time getting on the board in the second half scoring three times in their first at-bat. A Dustin Geiger RBI groundout, a RBI single by Chad Krist and Tim Saunders was hit with the bases loaded. John Andreoli and Zeke DeVoss set the table opening the inning with back-to-back singles. For the second time this season, Javier Baez launched a homer to the parking lot beyond the centerfield wall. It was his 15th. Benjamin Carhart (.286/343/.400) was 2-3, including his team-high 17th double. Baez (.276/.337/.551) went 2-4 with a walk, his 17th of the year.

On the Mound: Matthew Loosen threw six shutout innings allowing just four hits with eight strikeouts. It was Loosen firs win since joining Daytona and his first good outing since his first start of the year at AA Tennessee. He retired the final Blue jay hitters he faced. LHP Jeffrey Lorick recorded his first save throwing three shutout innings on three hits and he fanned four.

Low A—Quad Cities 5, Kane County 3

The second half started just like the first one for Kane County (0-1), losing to Quad Cities (1-0).

At the Plate: Kane County had a hit in every inning, 14 for the game, but went 2-18 with RISP, stranding 15 runners. Oliver Zapata's two-run triple scored Rock Shoulders and Marco Hernandez for a 2-0 lead in the second. Albert Almora (1-4, .396) hit a sacrifice fly to score Zapata (3-4, .271) in the sixth. Daniel Vogelbach, Shoulders and Hernandez all had two hits.

On the Mound: LHP Brian Smith (16 G 2-2 3.79) made his third start of the season as the left-hander surrendered four runs, three earned, on six hits and a walk in five innings. RHP Jose Rosario (0-3 5.47) allowed a run on three hits and a walk in three innings of work with two punchouts.


Game at Spokane was rained out and will be made up as a doubleheader on Saturday.

Rookie League—Angels 1, Cubs 0

A leadoff homer by the Angels' Mark Shannon was the only run of the game as the Angels (1-0) beat the Cubs (0-1) in the Arizona Rookie League opener.

At the Plate: Cubs only managed four singles, one each by DH Zak Blair and SS Giuseppe Papaccio, their first as professionals. Jeffrey Baez and Xavier Batista had the other two.

On the Mound: Erick Leal, 18, acquired from Arizona in the Tony Campana trade in February, made his Cubs debut allowing a leadoff homer. The left-hander went five innings allowing four hits with five punchouts. Andrew McKirahan returned from surgery in 2012 striking out the side in the sixth. Carlos Rodriguez, a 17-year-old from Venezuela, tossed two scoreless frames and David Villegas threw a 1-2-3 ninth. Cubs pitching allowed five hits and fanned 10 with two walks.
