Cubs June 23 Minor League Recap

Kyler Burke and Austin Reed shut down Lakeland as Daytona won 6-1 for the only Cubs minor league win on Sunday. Third-round pick Jacob Hannemann hit his first pro homer for Boise.

AAA—Memphis 6, Iowa 0

Memphis (38-40) moved into a first-place tie as three Redbirds pitchers blanked Iowa (38-40) including 7.2 innings from Cardinals top prospect Carlos Martinez.

At the Plate: Iowa had four hits, once each from Logan Watkins, Dave Sappelt, Tim Torres, and Donnie Murphy.

On the Mound: Nicholas Struck (4-5 6.05 ERA) surrendered six runs, five earned, on seven hits and two walks in five innings. Barret Loux (2 IP) and Marcus Hatley (1 IP) combined to hold the Redbirds scoreless over the final three innings.

AA—Chattanooga 5, Tennessee 2

Chattanooga (3-2) smacked three homers and won the deciding game of the five-game set against Tennessee (2-2)

At the Plate: Not a good day for the Smokies as the managed only five hits, didn't walk, and fanned 11 times. Tennessee got both runs in the sixth when they had three hits, including their only two extra base hits. Matt Szczur singled and took third on Arismendy Alcantara's double. Rubi Silva scored Szczur with a sacrifice fly to left field and Justin Bour followed with a double, plating Alcantara. Szczur is hitting (.361/.425/.444) in his last 10 games while Alcantara (.284 10 HR 33RBI) extended his hitting streak to six games.

On the Mound: Eric Jokisch (5-7 3.57 ERA) lost for the fourth time in five starts as the left-hander allowed three runs on six hits, including a pair of homers. He threw 106 pitches and fanned five. Trey McNutt (2-5 4.60) allowed a homer in the seventh and Frank Batista (2-2 2.38) surrendered a run in the eighth with two punchouts.

High A—Daytona 6, Lakeland 1

Kyler Burke and Austin Reed combined for a three-hitter against Lakeland in the opening game of the series.

At the Plate: Daytona had 15 hits and walked three times. Dustin Geiger (2-4) knocked in a pair running his FSL leading total to 60. Javier Baez (.280/.340/.561) added a pair of hits, drove in a run (52), and stole a base (8). LF John Andreoli (.315/.392/.399) has settled into the leadoff spot with a pair of walks, two runs and a hit. Ben Carhart (.289/.344/.402) went 3-4 and Zeke DeVoss (.231/.379/.333) added two hits and walked for the 40th time, second in the FSL. Tim Saunders and Taiwan Easterling both added a hit and a RBI.

On the Mound: Kyler Burke (4-0 3.19 ERA) continues to impress as the former outfielder turned pitcher won his fourth game in his sixth start. He held the Flying Tigers to one run on three hits an walk over six innings with a strikeout. Austin Reed (0-0 6.00) was even more impressive as the right-hander tossed three perfect innings with a pair of strikeouts for his first save of the season in 20 games.

Cubs Notes: RHP Pierce Johnson, the Cubs # 1 supplemental pick in last year's draft, will make his FSL debut tomorrow night against Lakeland. Johnson went 5-5 in 13 starts posting a 3.10 ERA, a BAA of .255, and a 1.29 WHIP. His stat line at Kane County was (69.2 IP, 68H, 29R, 24ER, 4HR, 22BB, 74K)

Low A—Quad Cities 6, Kane County 1

The second half has started the same as the first, with Quad Cities (4-0) sweeping Kane County (0-4).

At the Plate: The only run of the night came on Carlos Escobar's first homer of the season in the 8th inning. Daniel Vogelbach (1-4) is in the midst of a slump as the left-hander is 6 for his last 39 and hitting .194/.289/.433 in June. He's still hitting .262/.332/.435 on the season. Albert Almora (0-4 .361) has also cooled off as the outfielder is 2-23 in last five games.

On the Mound: MWL All-Star Felix Pena (2-2 3.04 ERA) made his first start for Kane County since May 10. The right-hander went on the DL on May 12 and returned June 5, making three relief appearances. He lasted 3.2 innings allowing eight hits and five runs, two earned. He fanned five but allowed a homer. Dillon Maples allowed a run in 2.1 innings while Justin Amlung and Nathan Dorris both tossed a scoreless frame.

Cougars Notes: Cougars are 2-11 vs River Bandits and only wins came in a DH on April 20 at Kane County

Short-Season—Spokane 8, Boise 6

Boise had the bases loaded in the ninth with no outs and a run already in but a strikeout and a double play ended the game.

At the Plate: Every Hawk starter had a hit as Jacob Rogers and Kevin Encarnacion had three hits apiece to lead the 14-hit attack. Jacob Hannemann hit his first homer as a pro and led the offense with three hits. David Bote had a pair of singles and aded a RBI. Shawon Dunston extended his hitting streak to a NWL-high eight games with a RBI double. Carlos Penalver (1-5) has a six game hitting streak and Encarnacion stretched his streak to seven games. Yasiel Balaguert knocked in his league-leading 13th run.

On the Mound: Duane Underwood (0-1 9.72 ERA), the Cubs 2nd round pick last year, struggled in his second start of the season allowing runs in each of the first three innings, including a pair of homers and two doubles. The right-hander was tagged for seven seven runs on eight hits and two walks. RHP Tyler Bremer allowed an unearned run and fanned four in 2.1 innings while LHP Matt Iannazzo worked a 1-2-3 eighth.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs

The Mesa Cubs (1-2) got Sunday off and are back at it tomorrow when they face the Angels.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs

The DSL Cubs (11-8) had the day off and play Rojos on Monday.

Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs

The VSL Cubs (16-17) had the day off and face the Phillies on Monday in a battle for second place.
