AAA—Memphis 7, Iowa 0
Memphis (38-41) moved back into a tie for first place with a win over Iowa (39-40)
At the Plate: Iowa only had one hit, a single by Jae-Hoon Ha in the first.
On the Mound: Yoanner Negrin (2-3 4.37) didn't make it out of the first inning allowing six runs, four earned on four hits and two walks. Casey Coleman went 4.1 innings yielding a run on three hits with four strikeouts. Eduardo Sanchez pitched two scoreless frames and Marcus Hatley blanked the Redbirds in the eighth.
AA—Tennessee 7, Jackson 6—14 innings
At the Plate: The Smokies tied the game in the second on a two-run homer by Christian Villanueva, his 7th. After not hitting a homer in over 900 at-bats, Elliot Soto belted his second in as many days to lead off the four-run third. Justin Bour added a run scoring single and two more runs scored on the play, including Bour on an error from the right-fielder. Torreyes had a one out single and was off and running with two outs and a 3-2 pitch when Szczur ripped a the walk-off double down the right-field line. It was Szczur's third hit of the game and pushed his average to .301.
On the Mound: Austin Kirk (1-1 5.48ERA) went 4.2 innings giving up four runs on six hits and a walk. P.J. Francescon worked 2.1 innings but the Generals got a run in the sixth on a hit and a walk. Tony Zych worked a scoreless eight but Frank Batista gave up the tying run in the ninth. Batista worked the tenth and turned the game over to Kevin Rhoderick who shut the Generals down in the 11th
High A—Daytona 5, Lakeland 2
Matthew Loosen held the Lakeland (1-4) to one hit over seven innings and Daytona (5-1) won their fourth straight
At the Plate: Daytona batted around in the fourth scoring four times, all with two outs. Wes Darvill (.253/359/.322) got the inning started with a two-run triple scoring Zeke DeVoss (.233/.383/.336) and Benjamin Carhart (.280/.339/.390). Tim Saunders (.227/.321/.315) followed with a run-scoring double and Pin-Chieh Chen (.400/478/.400) singled, scoring Saunders. Darvill added a RBI single in the 7th. Chen and Yaniel Cabezas (.207/.233/.276) both had two hits.
On the Mound: Matthew Loosen (2-2 3.68) threw one-hit ball for seven innings allowing a first inning run with eight strikeouts for his second straight quality outing for the Cubs. He retired the final 18 hitters he faced. Carlos Gutierrez threw 2 frames allowing an unearned run in the ninth on two hits in his first appearance for Daytona.
Cubs Notes: According to Sean Kernan of the Daytona Beach News-Journal, Jorge Soler went to Chicago on Tuesday to get additional medical evaluation on his left shin/calf that put him on the DL. Daytona manager Dave Keller told Kernan Soler is expected back soon but its not certain when he'll return to the lineup.
Low A—Beloit 9, Kane County 5
Beloit (4-1) scored five unearned runs in the first and hung on for the win to send Kane County (0-5) to their fifth straight defeat to start the second half.
At the Plate: The Cougars pounded out 11 hits, including four doubles, but went 4-18 with runners in scoring position. Albert Almora had two doubles, scored twice and upped his average to (.363/.388/.522). Daniel Vogelbach (.265/.335/.434), Jeimer Candelario (.257/340/.366) and Rock Shoulders (.272/.375/.500) had all two hits and Wilson Contreras (.248/.317/.436) had two RBI (27).
On the Mound: Brian Smith (2-3 3.70) only lasted an inning giving up five unearned runs with two outs after an error. He surrendered three hits, walked one and gave up a pair of homers. Lendy Castillo (0-5 6.88) gave up four runs in four innings on five hits and two walks. Nathan Dorris (2-2 2.70) three 3.1 frames as the Snappers scored once on three hits and Stephen Perakslis (1-3 3.06) got the final two outs.
Boise's game with Hillsboro was rained out. It was the first rainout at Boise since Aug. 17, 2004. The game will be made up as a doubleheader tomorrow night with first pitch at 6:15 P.M. MT.
Arizona Rookie League—Giants 14, Cubs 4
The Giants (3-2) pounded Cubs (1-4) pitching for 11 hits, including three homers.
At the Plate: The Cubs scored four times in the sixth as they opened the innings with four straight hits. Wilfredo Petit and Erick Castillo both singled and Petit scored on Rashard Crawford's double. Zak Blair's infield single scored Castillo and Jesse Hodges' grounder plated Crawford. The final run came of Jordan Hankins' groundout.
On the Mound: LHP Anthony Prieto (0-1 13.50), the Cubs 5th round pick in 2012, made his season debut as the Giants scored five times in 3.1 innings on five hits and two walks. Victor Garcia allowed two runs in 1.1 innings and Luis Guillen gave up four runs on three hits, including a pair of homers. Luis Guillen, Angel Mejias and David Villegas.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 4, Orioles II 1
Four Cubs (13-8) pitchers held the Orioles (9-12) to four hits and fanned nine in the win.
At the Plate: Juan Paniagua (8.1 IP, 10 K, 0.00 ERA) may not be able to get a VISA to the States but he's not letting that stop him in the DSL. The right-hander tossed four innings of one-hit ball with five punchouts. Jesus Perez got the win (3-1 2.76) allowing a run on 2.1 innings with three strikeouts. Luiz Escanio earned a hold and Gilberto Abreu picked up his fourth save.
Venezuelan Summer League—Tigers 8, Cubs 6
Cubs (17-18) had as many errors and they did runs falling to the Tigers (16-20)
At the Plate: The Cubs only had six hits as Bryant Flete (.295) had two singles and scored twice while 1B Delbis Arclia (.301) added two hits and two RBI. Roney Alcala (.363) extended his hitting streak to five games with a single, driving in his 24th run. Ricardo Marcano had his 10-game hitting streak snapped going 0-4 with three strikeouts.
On the Mound: The Cubs sent six pitchers to the mound allowing 12 hits and only four of the eight runs were eared. RHP Salvador Jerez, 20, (0-1 1.50 ERA) tossed three innings and was charged with three unearned runs and the loss. Albert Diaz (2-0 2.66 ERA) fanned four in 1.2 innings.
