Cubs June 28 Minor League Recap

Iowa and Daytona busted out the sticks in their victories, Boise rallied for a walk-off win, and the DSL Cubs moved into first with a shutout.

AAA—Iowa 5, Omaha 1

Brooks Raley tossed seven strong innings and Iowa (41-41) pounded Omaha (35-46) pitching for 16 hits to win The Opening game of the series

At the Plate: SS Logan Watkins led the hit parade going 4-5 while RF Dave Sappelt added a 3-5 performance with two RBI. LF Ty Wright was 2-5 with 2 RBI in his first game back at AAA while C Luis Flores and DH Darnell McDonald had two hits each.

On the Mound: LHP Brooks Raley (7-7 3.27) held the Storm Chasers to a run on five hits and a walk. He fanned two in his 95 pitch outing, his 16th start. Esmailin Caridad made his first appearance since going on the DL back in late May working a scoreless eighth and Eduardo Sanchez pitched the ninth.

Cubs Notes: The Chicago Cubs took C Steve Clevenger off the disabled list and optioned him to Iowa. To make room for Clevenger on the 40-man, Zach Putnam was moved to the 60-day DL with right elbow soreness.


Tennessee and Jackson had their game suspended in the bottom of the second (2-1 Smokies lead) by rain and the doubleheader canceled. Tennessee took a 2-0 lead in the first on a bases loaded walk to Justin Bour and a sacrifice fly by Christian Villanueva. Ronald Torreyes, Arismendy Alcantara and Rubi Silva started the inning with three straight singles. The Generals got a run back off starter A.J. Morris with a double and a run-scoring single. The games will be made up when the Smokies travel to Jackson on July 10-14, so look for some possible call ups with six games in four days.

High A—Daytona 13, Tampa 6

Daytona's offense exploded for 15 hits, including three homers, as the Cubs (7-2) won the series from Tampa (5-4).

At the Plate: Six Cubs had multi-hit games led by SS Javier Baez who went 3-6, scored three times, and blasted his FSL leading 17th homer. Zeke DeVoss (2-5 3R) and Wes Darvill (2-5 3R) both homered and Benjamin Carhart knocked in three runs. Bijan Rademacher had two hits and knocked in a pair in his FSL debut while Taylor Davis and Pin-Chieh Chen had two hits. Darvill is 9-18 with 8 RBI is his last four games.

On the Mound: Despite a 2.08 ERA and a BAA of .183, 22-year-old Yao-Lin Wang hasn't gotten much respect as a top pitching prospect. Making his third start (11G, 2-1) the right-hander has tossed 30.1 IP with 32K. He had a shoulder injury in April and missed about a month. Wang hadn't allowed a run in 10.2 innings entering the game and blanked the Yankees the first two frames. He got into trouble in the third walking the bases full and Tampa made him pay as he didn't last the inning. A ground rule double and a pair of sacrifice flies tied the game. Austin Reed (1-0 5.49) earned his first win of the season tossing three innings of one-hit ball with a season-high five strikeouts. RHP Eduardo Figueroa (1-3 4.91) worked the final three innings to record his third save of the year, yielding five hits and two runs.

Low A—Beloit 2, Kane County 0

Kane County's second half woes continued as the Cougars (1-7) were held to four hits getting shutout at home for the first time this season by Beloit (6-2).

At the Plate: The Cougars got four singles, two by Daniel Vogelbach, who is 10-20 during his five-game hitting steak.

On the Mound: Michael Heesch (3-6 3.52 ERA) only allowed a run in seven innings limiting the Snappers to five hits and one walk. Stephen Perakslis (1-3 3.13) surrendered a run in two innings with a pair of punchouts.

Cougars Notes: OF Kevin Encarnacion was promoted from Boise to Kane County replacing Bijan Rademacher, who went to Daytona. Encarnacion hit .298/.400/.489 in 13 games, including an eight-game hitting streak…..LHP Jeffry Antigua is off again, this time from Kane County to AA Tennessee. After two trips to AAA Iowa, the left hander is off to his third Cubs affiliate of the season. He was 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA with a save at Kane County in 13 games and was 2-1 4.61 in five games at Iowa, including a start. He's totaled 39.1 IP

Short-Season—Boise 5, Eugene 4—10 innings

Rony Rodriguez tied the game with a two-out solo homer in the bottom of the ninth and Jacob Rogers capped the comeback with a walk-off RBI single in the 10th as Boise (7-8) downed Eugene (5-10).

At the Plate: Boise loaded the bases with nobody out in the tenth and Rogers delivered the game-winner. Rony Rodriguez hit a pinch-hit homer in the bottom of the ninth with two outs to tie the game at 4-4 on a 2-0 pitch.. The Hawks got on the board in the fifth on a RBI single from Lance Rymel and a RBI groundout by Daniel Lockhart. Jacob Hannemann tripled and scored on Shawon Dunston's groundout in the eighth.

On the Mound: Duane Underwood, last year's second round pick, made his third start and the young right-hander hurled 4.1 innings yielding three runs, two earned on four hits. He didn't walk anyone and fanned three. Ethan Elias allowed a run in 2.2 innings and Orbandy Rodriguez held the Hops hitless in two frames. LHP Matt Iannazzo (1-1 3.52) worked a 1-2-3 tenth for the win.

Hawks Notes: Cubs sixth-round pick Scott Frazier, a right-hander out of Pepperdine, tweeted on Friday night he was headed to Boise.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs

The Cubs had the day off and aren't they lucky since the temperatures were 110 plus. The Cubs are 11th in the AZL in hitting (.211) and 12th in ERA at 5.81.

At the Plate: SS Giuseppe Papaccio, a 2013 draft pick, is of to a good start to his pro career hitting .350 (7-27) with two stolen bases and a OBP of .440. 2B Zak Blair is 4-14 in six games and RF Jeffrey Baez is 7-22. The Cubs have yet to hit a homer.

On the Mound: RHP Erick Leal, 18, acquired in the Tony Campana deal, has been the Cubs best arm allowing five hits and two walks in 10 innings with 12 strikeouts.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 3, Nationals 0

The Cubs (15-9) moved into first place with a win over the Nationals (14-10) as Jose Paulino and Jose Zapata combined for the shutout.

At the Plate: The Cubs had seven hits but none of them plated a run. All three runs scored on sac flies by Shamil Ubiera, Jhonny Pena and Carlos Ramirez. CF Jenner Emeterio swiped four bases and now has 19, tied for first in the DSL.

On the Mound: Jose Paulino, 18, (1-2 4.76) earned his first win of the year as the left-hander fanned eight and only allowed three hits and a walk in five innings. Jose Zapata, 19, (2-0 0.00) tossed four shutout innings with is nothing new as the right-hander has not allowed an earned run this season in 22 innings. He has 18 punchouts and three walks with a BAA of .173.

Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs

The Cubs (18-19) had the day off and find themselves 10 games behind the first-place Mariners. The Cubs lead the five-team league with a .273 team batting average but are fourth with a team ERA of 4.88, over two full points behind the M's (2.83).

At the Plate: Switch-hitting 3B Roney Alcala, 19, a July 2 signing in 2011, continues his hot hitting .376/.407/541 with four homers and 25 RBI. OF Delbis Arcila signed by the Cubs at age 16 in 2010, has six homers, tied with 1B Miguel Rico for the team lead, and is hitting .306/.380/.528 with 14 doubles. Ricardo Marcano, 18, leads the Cubs with 27 RBI and the July 2 2011 prospect has 11 SB and hitting /.277/.363/.474.

On the Mound: RH Greyfer Eregua, LH Adbert Alzolay, and RH Francisco Carrillo are baffling hitters in the VSL. Eregua, 19, is 1-1 with a 1.91 ERA and leads the league in WHIP at 0.94. The 5-foot-11, right-hander has 28 K in 33 IP and only three walks. Alzolay, 18, is making the most of his first professional season after signing in November of 2012. The lefty is 3-1 with a WHIP of 1.06 and a league-leading ERA of 1.13. In 32 innings he has 18 punchouts and 9 walks. Carrillo, 23, is 5-2 in 13 relief appearances and sports a 2.01 ERA and a WHIP of 0.99. He's second in the VSL with 35 strikeouts and has only issued three walks.
