Cubs June 29 Minor League Recap

Eric Jokisch and two other relievers blanked the Biscuits while Rubi Sliva's smacked a grand slam in the Smokies 13-0 win. RHP Trey Masek made his pro debut for Boise, and Zak Blair led Mesa with three hits and three RBI.

AAA—Iowa 8, Omaha 5

Iowa (42-41) stayed in first place breaking open a close game with four runs in the 8th to down Omaha (35-47).

At the Plate: Iowa had 14 hits, as five I-Cubs had multi-hit games with Ty Wright pacing the offense with a double, his 1st homer, and three RBI. Logan Watkins added a solo homer and single while Junior Lake had a pair of hits and a RBI. Darnell McDonald and J.C Boscan had two hits apiece.

On the Mound: Nicholas Struck (5-5) earned the win limiting the Storm Chaser to three runs on eight hits and three walks. He had one strikeout in his 78-pitch, six inning outing. Casey Coleman allowed two runs on five hits and two walks in 1.1 innings. Brian Schlitter recorded his 7th save getting a double play grounder to end an Omaha rally in the eighth and fanned a pair on the ninth to preserve the win.

AA—Tennessee 13, Montgomery 0

Three Tennessee (5-3) pitchers held Montgomery (5-5) to four hits and the Smokies offense erupted for 13 runs, four coming on Rubi Silva's grand slam.

At the Plate: Tennessee pounded out 14 hits as John Andreoli was impressive in his AA debut going 3-5 with a pair of RBI. Jonathan Mota had three hits while Silva blasted a grand slam in the third and finished the day with three hits and five RBI. Arismendy Alcantara had a pair of doubles and knocked in two while Ronald Torreyes had two hits, scored three times, and added a RBI.

On the Mound: Eric Jokisch (6-7 3.33) pitched into the 7th holding the Biscuits scoreless on three hits with seven strikeouts. He threw 92 pitches, 61 for strikes. Yeiper Castillo fanned four in 1.2 innings and Tony Zych tossed the ninth.

Smokies Notes: Silva's grand slam was the first for the Smokies this season.

High A—Clearwater 3, Daytona 2

A two-run double in the third inning gave Clearwater (4-5) the win over Daytona (7-3) in the opener of a three-game series at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

At the Plate: Daytona scored all their runs in the first on a RBI single from Javier Baez and after Baez swiped second, scored on Dustin Geiger's single.

On the Mound: Pierce Johnson (0-1 4.91 ERA) made his second start in the FSL allowing three earned runs on five hits and four walks, a season-high for the right-hander. He got three hitters on strikes in his 15th start between the Cubs two Class A affiliates. Jeffrey Lorick (2.2 IP) and Luis Liria (1.1) combined for five strikeouts blanking the Threshers.

Low A—Wisconsin 10, Kane County 9—11 innings

Wisconsin (2-7) won a wild one scoring two runs in the bottom of the tenth and then added two more in the 11th to down Kane County (1-8).

At the Plate: Kane County pounded out 15 hits, walked four times, and went 6-13 with RISP but still couldn't get the win. Reggie Golden and Gioskar Amaya had three hits each while Oliver Zapata knocked in three. Daniel Vogelbach had two hits and drove in a pair, including the go-ahead run in the 11th. Kevin Encarnacion made his MWL debut going 2-4 with a RBI and a walk. Jeimer Candelario was 2-4 and Albert Almora was 0-5 with RBI that tied the game in the ninth.

On the Mound: Tough night for Nathan Dorris (2-3 3.34) as the left handed blew the save in the 10th and then took the loss in the 11th allowing four runs on five hits and two walks over the final 1.2 innings. It looked like Dorris may pitch out of the jam in the 11th getting a force out at home with the bases loaded but Carlos Escobar's throw to first on the double play attempt went down the right field line allowing the winning run to score. Dillon Maples had problem in his first inning of relief allowing two runs on four walks, a hit batter, a wild pitch and a passed ball. He added two scoreless innings and didn't allow a hit in 3 IP. Felix Pena got the start (6IP, 4H, 4ER, 2BB 2K).

Short-Season—Boise 8, Eugene 6

Jacob Rogers two-run single put Boise ahead for good in the Hawks' three-run sixth as they downed Eugene (5-11) for their third straight win.

At the Plate: Yasiel Balaguert had two hits, including a two-run homer in the first, his third. David Bote had a pair of singles, scored three times and added a RBI while Shawon Dunston had two hits and a RBI. Rogers had the big two-run single and Rony Rodriguez stroked a RBI single in the eighth.

On the Mound: Corbin Hoffner earned his first win of the season tossing 3.1 innings of relief yielding an unearned run on a hit and two walks. The right-hander fanned four, has 12 K, and still hasn't allowed an earned run in 12.1 innings. Trey Masek, the Cubs fifth-round pick in June, made his pro debut and is the first pitcher of the draft class to take the mound. The right-hander from Texas Tech allowed a leadoff hit in the seventh but got a double play and a groundout to end his first pro inning. Tyler Bremer (0-1 1.23) recorded his first save fanning four in the final two in frames. Trey Lang had a rough start allowing five hits, four walks, and a homer as he was charged with three earned runs in 2.2 innings.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 8, A's 6

The A's (3-5) came back from a 5-0 deficit but the Cubs (3-5 ) hung on for the win.

At the Plate: The Cubs made the most of their seven hits as Zak Blair had three hits and drove in three, including the go-ahead run in the seventh with his second double of the game. Jesse Hodges had three hits and a RBI while Jeffrey Baez walked four times, scoring three runs. Guiseppe Papaccio went 1-5 with a RBI triple in the fifth.

On the Mound: RHP Dayan Diaz, 24, was making a rehab start from Daytona and seeing his first action of 2013 after spending his first seven years of his career in the Astros minor league system. He worked a scoreless first with a pair of strikeouts. Victor Garcia (1-0 13.50) blew the save opportunity but got the win allowing four hits and two runs in .2 innings. Luis Villalba worked the final 2.2 innings for the save recording five punchouts.

Cubs Notes: First pitch temperature was 114 degrees.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 8, Pirates II 7

Antonio Valerio's walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth gave the Cubs the win over the Pirates II (12-12) capping the Cubs comeback win.

At the Plate: The Cubs rallied after falling behind 7-1 ending the game with 13 hits, including homers by Jose Paniagua (1) and Valerio (1). Valerio had three hits and knocked in four, including the game winner. Johnny Pena, Dalfis Ortiz and Paniagua all ended the game with two hits.

On the Mound: Gilberto Abreu won is first game holding the Pirates hitless for 2.2 innings with two strikeouts. Luiz Escanio (1.1 IP 0ER 2K), Dilson Vasquez (2IP, 3H 4R 0ER) and Jeffy Hernandez (3IP, 8H, 3ER) all saw action

Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs 3, Phillies 2

Roney Alcala drove in all three runs including a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth as the Cubs (19-19) downed the Phillies (20-18)

At the Plate: The Cubs got seven hits but Alcala was the offense with a RBI double in the first and his fifth homer of the season in the 8th. Bryant Fleete had a pair of hits and scored twice, stealing his 12th base.

On the Mound: RHP Adbert Alzolay (3-1 1.71ERA ), 18, fanned six in five innings allowing three hits, including a homer. Albert Diaz (3-0 2.66) got the win tossing 3.1 innings with three strikeouts and surrendered the second homer of the day to Francisco Herrera. Yomar Pacheco (2-2 2.92) got the final two outs on strikes for his fifth save.
