Cubs July 3 Minor League Recap

Tennessee was the only affiliate to get a victory as they downed Montgomery 3-1 behind a strong outing from A.J Morris

AAA—Memphis 6, Iowa 5

Iowa (44-43) hit four homers but Memphis (41-46) rallied for the win scoring the deciding run in the ninth.

At the Plate: Brad Nelson (15), Junior Lake (3), and Ty Wright (2) hit back-to-back-to-back homers in the fourth to tie the game. Jae-Hoon Ha hit his first AAA homer, a two run shot to give the I-Cubs a 5-3 lead in the fifth. Ha also doubled and is hitting .256/.275/.385 in 10 games. The Cubs had seven hits and walked twice but were 0-3 with RISP.

On the Mound: Yoanner Negrin (2-3 ) made his 7th start and surrendured five earned run on 1 hits and a walk. He fanned six and threw 102 pitches in 5.1 innings. Esmailin Caridad (.2 IP) and Michael Bowden (2 IP) kept the game tied by Brian Schlitter gave up the deciding run in the 9th on two hits and a sacrifice bunt.

Cubs Notes: I-Cubs had 14.186 fans at Principal Park Wednesday night…..Junior Lake continues to square up the baseball and is hitting .321/.358/.509 in 29 games since coming off the DL.

AA—Tennessee 3, Montgomery 1

A.J. Morris threw six shutout innings as Tennessee (8-5) beat Montgomery (7-8) for the second straight night.

At the Plate: Christian Villanueva (.248/.305/.438) homered for the second straight night and Justin Bour (.214/.325/.437) added a solo blast to pace the offense. John Andreoli continued to impress at the AA level with a RBI single and is hitting .318 in his first five games. Matt Szczur (.301/.370/.401) moved his average over the .300 mark with a 2-4 night scoring a run. Jonathan Mota (.252/.336/.369) and Elliot Soto both had two hits.

On the Mound: A.J. Morris (2-0 ) took the ball to start the game for the fifth time after 14 relief appearances to start the season. Morris, 26, allowed six hits and a walk in his 73-pitch gem. Kevin Rhoderick (1.2 IP) earned his fifth hold and Zach Rosscup gave up a run in the ninth but recorded his second save getting the final four outs.

High A—Brevard County 5, Daytona 1

Brevard County (8-4) moved into first place with a the win over Daytona (7-4) scoring all five runs in the seventh.

At the Plate: Daytona was held to four hits and the only run came in the ninth. Javier Baez (.273/.334/.539) and Benjamin Carhart (.279/.335/.385) walks and Baez scored on a Wes Darvill (.262/.358/.379) single.

On the Mound: Matt Loosen (2-2 3.00) was impressive his third straight start striking out six in five shutout innings. He yielded four hits and two walks. Loosen has given up one earned run in the last 18 innings. Eduardo Figueroa (1-4 5.59) threw a scoreless sixth but the Manatees batted around scoring five runs on six hits in the seventh. Larry Suarez tossed a scoreless eighth.

Cubs Notes: Daytona has placed LHP Kyler Burke on the DL and recalled RHP Dyan Diaz from the DL. Diaz started the year on the DL after signing a free agent contract. He pitched in two games in the AZL before being called up to Daytona. He spent his first six season in the Astros organization.

Low A—Wisconsin 4, Kane County 2

Kane County's (2-11) struggles continue as Wisconsin (5-8) won its fourth game of the five-game set.

At the Plate: Daniel Vogelbach (.278/.351/.447) knocked in two runs to put his season total at 50 RBI for the slugging first baseman. He had three hits, half of the team's total. Gioskar Amaya (.250/.315/.373) and Albert Almora (.343/.368/.490) both scored and each had a hit.

On the Mound: Michael Heesch fell to 3-7 on the season as the big left-hander gave up eight hits and a walk which led to four runs. He threw 85 pitches and didn't strike anyone out. Armando Rivero (0-0 8.44) and Stephen Perakslis (1-3 3.05) both tossed a scoreless inning.

Cougars Notes: The Cougars open a five-game home stand with Quad Cities, who have beaten the Cougars 11 times in 13 games.

Short-Season—Salem-Kaiser 11, Boise 3

Salem-Kaiser (14-6) took control early scoring seven times in the second to end Boise's (11-9) six-game winning streak.

At the Plate: Boise did all their scoring in the third as doubles by Carlos Penaliver, Yasiel Balaguert and Justin Marra led to three runs. Marra's double plated two and David Bote added a sacrifice fly. Jacob Rogers added two hits to up his average to .281.

On the Mound: Tough night on the mound for Boise pitching as Loiger Padron gave up seven earned run on six hits and three walks in 1.2 innings. Corbin Hoffner's earned run streak came to an end as the right-hander allowed four earned run in 3.1 innings on six hits and two walks. Scott Frazier pitched a 1-2-3 sixth with a strikeout in his second pro game. Andrew McKirahan and Matt Iannazzo both threw a scoreless inning.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs

Cubs Notes: Cubs 2nd round pick Rob Zastryzny has been assigned to the Mesa Cubs and should make his pro debut in the next few days. Starling Peralta is listed on a rehab assignment but was sent to extended spring training a few months ago after struggling at Daytona. Michael Wagner, 15th round pick from San Diego, was assigned to Mesa and made his pro debut last night, working a scoreless eighth inning to earn a hold.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 12, Mets I 1

The Cubs (18-9) scored six runs in the fourth and fifth to down the Mets (12-15) in a rain-shortened game.

At the Plate: The Cubs pounded out 12 hits with RF Shamil Ubiera (.250/.321/.323) ripping three singles and scoring twice. 2B Dalfis Ortiz (.323/.388/.516) had two hits, scored twice and had 1 RBI. C Antonio Valerio (.278/.333/.354) went 2-3 with two runs and 2 RBI while LF Jose Paniagua (.211/.326/.316) had a two-run double and scored once.

On the Mound: Luis Hernandez, a 18-year-old 6-foot-5 right-hander, went five innings allowing a hit and an unearned run. He recored three strikeouts. Hernandez is 2-2 with a 1.78 ERA in his first pro season. Despite allowing a hit and two walks, Carlos Liano worked a scoreless inning before the rain.
