On the Mound: Jake Arrieta made his Cubs debut after being acquired July 2 in the deal for Scott Feldman. The right-hander started 63 big league games for the Orioles going 20-25 with a 5.46 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP. The 5th round pick in 2007 was considered one of the Orioles top prospects in 2011. He fanned two, walked two and allowed a hit in a scoreless first.
AA—Tennessee 3, Huntsville 1
At the Plate: Arismendy Alcantara continues to put up numbers as the second baseman doubled, homered, knocked in two and scored twice in the win. It was his 12th homer, all coming from the left-side of the plate. He's hitting .276/.353/.477 in 83 games. John Andreoli (.345) had two hits and a RBI and Christian Villanueva added two hits and upped his average to .259.
On the Mound: Alberto Cabrera had all three of his pitches working Friday night as the right-hander fanned seven and worked into the eighth inning. He held the Stars to four hits and two walks and the only run was a solo homer in the third. Cabrera (8-3 3.32 ERA) leads the Southern League with 104 Ks. Hunter Cervenka got a strikeout to end the 8th and Frank Batista (2.25 ERA) got his 11th save with a scoreless ninth.
Smokies Notes: Matt Szczur's 11-game hitting streak came to an end.
High A—Daytona 5, Brevard County 2
Daytona (9-4) won its second straight to take the series from Brevard County (8-6) and have won 9 of 13 against the Manatees.
At the Plate: Dustin Geiger had two hits and two RBI and leads the FLS with 65. Geiger has put together a good offensive season as well as learning a new position on defense. He's hitting .280/.348/.446 with nine homers and 19 doubles. Wes Darvill, hitting .343 in his last 10 games with nine RBI, continued his torrid pace knocking a tape measure shot over the right-field wall. Chadd Krist was 1-2 with two walks and a RBI. Javier Baez just scores run and added to his FSL lead (59). He singled in the third, stole second, stole third and scored when the throw went into left field. He is 12-14 on the bases.
On the Mound: Zach Cates (8-6 3.95 ERA) went six innings and retired the leadoff hitter in each of his six innings. The right-hander gave up two runs on six hits and fanned four. Luis Liria (1 IP) and Frank Del Valle (2 IP) combined to shutout the Manatees with Del Valle getting his fifth save
Javier Baez has played his last game in Daytona this season. The Daytona Cubs reported Friday night that Baez is headed to AA Tennessee. His new double-play partner will be Arismendy Alcantara, who has moved to 2B since Ronald Torreyes was traded to Houston. Nothing new for Alcantara who has played 21 games at second for the Smokies.
Low A—Kane County 8, Quad Cities 7
Kane County (4-11) rallied for five runs in the bottom of the 8th to beat Quad Cities (10-5) for the second straight night.
At the Plate: The Cougars needed a big inning and they got it in the eight heading into the frame trailing 6-3. 2B Gioskar Amaya delivered the big hit, a two-run double. After a tough first half, the 20-year-old Venezuelan has caught fire hitting .350/.395/.750 in his last 10 games and has raised his batting average nearly 20 points since the end of the first half. The Cougars made the most of their nine hits as Daniel Vogelbach (.284/.355/.461) blasted his 13th homer of the season, a two-run shot, while Albert Almora (.340/.373/.513) tripled and homered (4), scoring twice. 2013 18th round pick Giuseppe Papaccio, playing third base, made his MWL debut an impressive one going 2-4 with a double and a RBI single in the eighth.
On the Mound: LHP Brian Smith (2-3 4.09 ERA) allowed one run through five innings but surrendered a two-run homer in the sixth. He finished with a line of 5IP, 3H 3ER 3BB 1K. Lendy Castillo (2-5 6.79) got the win but his struggles continue as he surrendered three runs in the top of the eighth allowing five hits and three walks in three innings. Justin Amlung (3-3 4.68) recorded his first pro save getting out of the ninth with one earned run by a hit and a walk.
Short-Season—Tri-City 9, Boise 3
Tri-City (8-14) scored six times in the third and won for the second straight night in Boise (11-11)
At the Plate: Hawks only had five hits but did plate three runs in the second to take a 3-2 lead. Carlos Penalver ripped a two-run double and Jordan Hankins added a sacrifice fly. They added six walks but were just 2-8 with RISP.
On the Mound: Trey Lang continues to struggle to find his control as the right hander has walked 12 in 12.2 IP. Those woes continued Friday night as he issued two free passes in the first, both scoring. Lang never made it out of the third ending the night with a line of 2IP, 5H, 8R, 7ER, 3BB 3K, including a homer. 2013 draft picks Trey Masek (2IP) and Tyler Skulina (1IP) both saw action and recorded their first pro strikeouts. Ethan Elias worked three scoreless frames and Orbandy Rodriguez tossed a 1-2-3 ninth.
Arizona Rookie League—Rangers 3, Cubs 1
Cubs (7-6) fell to the Rangers (8-5) as they went 1-11 with RISP.
At the Plate: The Cubs scored their only run of the game in the third when Zak Blair delivered a two-out single scoring Alberto Mineo, who reached on an error. Charcer Burks, the Cubs 9th round pick, had his first pro hit, a single in the first.
On the Mound: Alex Santana (0-1 3.14) got the loss but he had decent performance as the 19-year-old allowed two runs in five innings on three hits and two walks. Chang-Yong Lim (1 IP) and Marcos Mateo (2 IP) both continued their rehab stints. Michael Wagner, the Cubs 15th round pick, worked a scoreless inning and recorded his first pro punchout.
Cubs Notes: The Cubs released RPH Jorge Diaz, a 21-year-old signed in 2011 who played the last two season in the DSL.
Dominican Summer League—Cubs 6, Yankees 5
The Cubs (19-9) scored three runs in the top of the ninth to rally past the Yankees (14-13).
At the Plate: Roberto Caro's triple capped a three-run ninth as the Cubs used a walk and three extra bases to grab the lead. Caro, a speedy switch-hitting 19-year-old outfielder, is hitting (.250/.360/.389) in the leadoff spot. Shamil Ubiera (.260/.327/.360) had two hits and two RBI. Johnny Pena (.241/.337/.337) and Antonio Valerio (.277/.330/.361) both had RBI doubles in the ninth.
On the Mound: 18-year-old lefty Jose Paulino got the win allowing a run on four hits with six punchouts.Paulino has 23 K in 17 IP. Gilberto Abreu, 19, (1-0 0.84) notched his fourth save with a perfect ninth. Jose Zapata fanned seven in four innings but surrendered four runs.
Venezuelan Summer League—Tigers 2, Cubs 1
A triple and a throwing error allowed the deciding run to score in the fifth as the Tigers (22-22) beat the Cubs (20-23)
At the Plate: Only four hits for the offense as Roney Alcala (.382/.412/.573) knocked in Bryant Flete (.306/.401/.406) with a groundout. Flete reached on an error, stole second, took third on Ricardo Marcano's (280/.353/.460) singled and scored on Alcala's 31st RBI.
On the Mound: Adbert Alzolay (3-2 1.50 ERA) fanned six in five innings but allowed two runs on five hits and a walk. The 18-year-old right-hander has a BAA of .214 and a 1.02 WHIP in 42 IP. Alberto Diaz, 22, (3-0 2.36) tossed three hitless innings with three punchouts.
Cubs Notes: Pitchers Victor Garcia and Augusto Colina were both sent to the VSL from the Arizona Rookie League. Garcia, 21, didn't have any success in the AZL appeared in two games with a 13.50 ERA and a WHIP of 4.50 in 2 IP. Colina, 21, went 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA in two games, throwing 1.2 innings and allowing a homer with two walks. The Cubs also added 17-year-old SS Jesus Gonzalez to the roster.
