Cubs July 6 Minor League Recap

Cubs prospect Javier Baez made his AA debut Saturday night in Tennessee blasting a 2-1 pitch over the CF wall in his first at-bat but it wasn't enough as the Smokies lost. Daytona and the DSL Cubs were the only winners.

AAA—Completion of Suspended game from 7/5—Albuquerque 10, Iowa 3; Game 2—Albuquerque 1, Iowa 0

Albuquerque swept Iowa winning the completion of the July 5 suspended game and then blanked the I-Cubs in the seven-inning nightcap.

At the Plate: Game 1—Iowa plated three runs with Darnell McDonald scoring twice and driving in a run. The I-Cubs struggled getting a big hit, going 2-17 with RISP. Logan Watkins (.256) had two singles and one RBI. Game 2—Iowa had five hits, all singles and were 0-4 with RISP.

On the Mound: Game 1—Esmailin Caridad started after the rain delay inheriting two runners from Jake Arrieta, who made his Cubs debut on Friday night. Caridad went three fames allowing two runs plus another run that was charged to Arrieta. Jeffry Antigua, Marcus Hartley and Eduardo Sanchez each allowed two earned runs. Game 2—Barret Loux (4-3 4.25) went the distance but took the loss yielding a run on four hits and four walks. The right-hander fanned six in the 95-pitch, six-inning outing.

Cubs Notes: LHP Jeffry Antigua joined the team for the second time this season….Cubs faced a familiar face in the second game as former Cub Ian Stewart made his Dodger debut going 2-3 with a double and scored the game's only run.

AA—Huntsville 8, Tennessee 2

Huntsville (6-12) scored seven times in their first four at-bats downing Tennessee (10-6).

At the Plate: Javier Baez made a big splash in his AA debut taking the first three pitches and then blasting a homer over the centerfield fence over 400 feet away. Baez went 0-3 the rest of the night (K, F-7, 5-3) and it was his 18th homer of the season. Christian Villanueva (.259/.313/.455) drilled his 11th homer of the season and has 42 RBI. OF Rubi Silva had two singles snapping a 0-17 streak.

On the Mound: LHP Austin Kirk (1-3 7.76 ERA) left with an injury in the third but not before surrendering six earned runs on seven hits and three walks. Yeiper Castillo allowed a run in five innings and Kevin Rhoderick threw two frames allowing a run.

High A—Daytona 6, Dunedin 5

Daytona jumped out to a 6-5 lead and hung on for the one-run win over Dunedin as RHP Pierce Johnson won his first Florida State League game.

At the Plate: Zeke DeVoss continues to up his average as the switch hitter went 3-5 and knocked in three runs. DeVoss is hitting .368/.457/.500 in his last 10 games. Benjamin Carhart (.277/.331/.378) had three base hits and drove in a pair, giving him 38 RBI. Bijan Rademacher had his second multi-hit game since joining Daytona with two doubles and a RBI. Pin-Chieh Chen (.342/.468/.395) continues to contribute scoring two runs with a triple and two walks.

On the Mound: Pierce Johnson (1-1 3.38 ERA) blanked the Blue Jays for five innings scattering five hits with five punchouts to earn his first FSL victory. Austin Reed tossed two shutout innings but Jeffrey Lorick surrendered five runs in the eighth, three scoring on a homer. Dayan Diaz survived the ninth despite allowing three hits and the Cubs threw out the potential game-tying run.

Cubs Notes: SS Elliot Soto joined the roster from Tennessee trading places with Javier Baez. Soto went 0-5 for Daytona batting second.

Low A—Quad Cities 5, Kane County 0

Kane County (4-12) could only manage three singles as Quad Cites (11-5) blanked the Cougars.

At the Plate: Three hits and two walks were all the Cougars offense could muster against three River Bandits pitchers. Albert Almora (.342), Marco Hernandez (.261) and Carlos Escobar (.254) all singled.

On the Mound: Jose Rosario (0-5 6.00 ERA) gave up five runs on six hits and four walks in five innings. LHP Sheldon McDonald tossed three scoreless innings while Michael Hamann held the Bandits scoreless in the ninth.

Cougars Notes: It was the fifth time the Cougars have been shutout…..Albert Almora left the game in the sixth inning and according to freelance reporter Paul Johnson, Almora is "dealing with hemorrhoids"…..

Short-Season—Tri-City 5, Boise 3

Tri-City (9-14) won the third straight game of the series downing Boise (11-12).

At the Plate: One swing from Jacob Rogers tied the game at 3-3 in the third as the first baseman launched his 3rd homer. Rogers added a single and is hitting .289. Daniel Lockhart (.319/.373/.348) had a pair of singles and scored once.

On the Mound: James Pugliese (2-1 3.12 ERA) suffered his first loss as the Dust Devils had eight hits and scored five runs off the right-hander. Scott Frazier worked two scoreless innings with a punchout. Zack Godley took care of business in his Boise debut working a 1-2-3 eighth with a pair of strikeouts. Matt Iannazzo worked the ninth with two strikeouts and a pickoff after a single.

Hawks Notes: Second-round pick Rob Zastryzny and 10th round selection Zack Godley were assigned to Boise from Mesa. Dae-Eun Rhee, rehabbing from an injury he suffered while pitching for Tennessee in April, was added to the roster. RHP Carlos Martinez and OF Jacob Hannemann were placed on the DL.

Arizona Rookie League—Rangers 11, Cubs 4

Rangers (9-5) pounded out 12 hits to beat the Cubs (7-7) as the Cubs committed five errors which led to six unearned runs.

At the Plate: Rashad Crawford went 2-2 and drove in a run and Charcer Burks added a singled and scored as the Cubs were held to three hits.

On the Mound: The Cubs used five pitchers and they all gave up runs except Juan Francisco who tossed the final two frames.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 4, Cardinals 2

The Cubs (20-9) scored four runs in the first and beat the Cardinals (15-14)

At the Plate: The Cubs recorded three of their four hits in the first scoring four times, two coming on Johnny Pena's 2nd homer. Dalfis Ortiz doubled home Roberto Caro (triple) and Shamil Ubiera knocked in a run with a groundout.

On the Mound: Yomar Morel debuted tossing two scoreless frames with a pair of punchouts. Morel, 19, was signed in 2010 and the right-hander is in his third season in the DSL. Jeffry Hernandez (1-0 4.22) allowed the only two runs of the game but recorded the win scattering seven hits in 3.1 innings. Carlos Liano struck out the final hitter for his fifth save.

Venezuelan Summer League—Mariners 13, Cubs 6

Mariners (33-11) scored six times in the top of the first and thumped the Cubs (20-24).

At the Plate: CF Arnaldo Calero (.259/.299/.379) had a big day at the plate with three hits including his 4th homer. 2B Humberto Garcia (.234/.290/.312) singled and tripled while SS Bryant Flete (.307/.403/.405) added a single as the Cubs only had six base knocks.

On the Mound: The Cubs sent six pitchers to the mound. The best outing was turned in by Manuel Fuentes, throwing 3.1 scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.
