Cubs July 9 Minor League Recap

The only wins on Tuesday came from the DSL and VSL Cubs squads as three of the affiliates had the day off.

AAA—New Orleans 9, Iowa 0

Iowa (47-46) only had three hits as the I-Cubs were blanked by New Orleans (44-48)

At the Plate: Ty Wright (.274/.326/.417) doubled, Brad Nelson (.263/.346/.478) singled, and Anthony Giansanti (538/.571/.769 in 13 AB) added a pinch-hit single. That was it for the Iowa offense.

On the Mound: Jake Arrieta (0-1 7.71 ERA) gave up 10 hits in 3.2 innings allowing seven runs, only three earned. He walked one, fanned three and threw 93 pitches before leaving in the fourth. Marcus Hatley (1.1 IP), Jeffy Antigua (1 IP 2R), Eduardo Sanchez (1 IP) and Casey Coleman (1 IP) all saw action.


Had the day off.

High A—Lakeland 4, Daytona 3

Lakeland (6-10) scored four times in the bottom of the seventh to beat Daytona (11-6) in The Opening game of the series.

At the Plate: Daytona collected seven hits, walked six times but left 10 on base going 2-10 with RISP. Pin-Chieh Chen (.354/.466/.438) continues to square up the ball with two hits, a RBI, and two stolen bases. Elliot Soto (.263/.263/.316) had two hits while Zeke DeVoss (.247/.391/.359) and Benjamin Carhart (.267/.322/.365) knocked in runs.

On the Mound: Ben Wells (6-6 3.30 ERA/1.22 WHIP) pitched six brilliant innings allowing a hit with four strikeouts. A hit batter and a walk to start the seventh ended his night but Frank Del Valle (3-2 2.87/1.46) couldn't shut the door as the Flying Tigers added two more hits and a pair of walks, scoring four times before the frame was over. Eduardo Figueroa (1-4 5.45/1.87) pitched a scoreless eighth.

Low A—Kane County

Had the day off.


Boise had the day off as they headed north of the border for their five-game series with Vancouver July 10-14.

At the Plate: The big story with the bat has been Cuban 20-year-old OF Yasiel Balaguert who leads the NWL with 23 RBI and is 4th in OPS at .898. The right-hander is hitting .289/.387/.511 with 4 HR (2nd in NWL). 1B Jacob Rogers is off to a good start hitting .293/426/.415 with 3HR an 15 RBI and leads the Hawks in walks (19) and OBP. OF Shawon Dunston is putting together a good season at the plate in his second go-around in Boise hitting .305/.400/.427. 2B Daniel Lockhart leads the Hawks in average as the the left-hander is hitting .325/.381/.351 in 23 games.

On the Mound: James Pugliese (2-1 3.12 ERA/1.15 WHIP) and Paul Blackburn (0-1 1.17/1.00) have been the top two starters for the Hawks. Blackburn has thrown 23 innings and is third in NWL with 24K, 8 BB, and a BAA of .185. Five pitchers from the 2013 draft—Trey Masek (4 IP), Tyler Skulina (4 IP), Scott Frazier (3.2 IP), Zack Godley (1 IP) and Rob Zastryzny (1 IP)—have all joined Boise and new arms haven't allow an earned run.

Roster Moves: RHP Trey Lang, OF Yasiel Balaguert, RHP Trey Masek, SS Carlos Penalver have been sent from Boise to AZL in Mesa….Balaguert's was not able to stay with the team on their trip to Canada due to visa issues and possible deportation to Cuba if he entered the country.

Arizona Rookie League—Diamondbacks 5, Cubs 1

The D-Backs (8-8) scored four times in the fourth, two coming on wild pitches, as they defeated the Cubs (7-9)

At the Plate: The Cubs continue to struggle with the bats with a team batting average of .209 recording three hits. Two of those came in the fourth when Jeffrey Baez doubled and scored on Francisco Sanchez's single.

On the Mound: Chang-Young Lin and Jose Arias, assigned from Kane County today, both threw an inning continuing their rehab stints. Trey Masek, who was recalled from Boise today, got put to work immediately getting a pair of strikeouts in the third but the right-hander didn't make it out of the 4th allowing two hits, two walks. and throwing two wild pitches. Erick Leal (0-1 1.15) fanned four and allowed a run in 3.2 frames. Michael Wagner (0-0 0.00) tossed a scoreless eighth, his third one-inning outing since being drafted.

Cubs Notes: Kane County sent RHP Jose Arias to Mesa on a rehab assignment.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 15, Brewers 6

Cubs (21-10) pounded out 15 hits scoring two or more runs in six different innings in the win over the Brewers (8-23)

At the Plate: Roberto Caro and Dalfis Ortiz both had three hits and two RBI while Varonex Cuevas went 3-5 and scored twice. Luis Acosta, a July 2 2011 signee, hit his first homer, a three-run shot. Adonis Paula drove in two runs and has a team-high (19). The Cubs drew seven walks and took advantage of five Brewer errors.

On the Mound: Cubs pitching surrendered 11 hits but limited the damage to three earned runs, two errors led to three unearned. Carlos Liano (3-1 3.86) got the win (3.1IP, 3H 1ER 1BB 1K) while Dilson Vasquez (2-0 3.45) and Gilberto Abreu (1-0 0.71) held the Brewers scoreless the final three frames.

Cubs Notes: The Cubs lead the Boca Chica South by 3.5 games over the Nationals and their 21 wins is tied for second in the 35-team DSL.

Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs 2, Phillies 1

Roberto Vahlis hit a pinch-hit two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth to give the Cubs (22-24) the win over the Phillies (23-23)

At the Plate: Besides Vahlis' game-winning homer, the only other two hits the Cubs had were a pair of singles from Victor Gomez.

On the Mound: The Cubs used five pitchers who combined for eight strikeouts and two walks. Victor Garcia started and threw five shutout innings allowing five of the eight Phillies hits. Manuel Fuentes go the win tossing a scoreless eighth and Yoman Pacheco earned his sixth save getting the final two outs.
