Cubs 2012 first-round pick Pierce Johnson continued to impress in his first full season as the right-hander tossed six strong innings helping Daytona beat Lakeland. RHP Alberto Cabrera (9-3) continues to mow down Southern League hitters throwing three-hit ball over seven innings for his fourth straight win.

AAA—Albuquerque 4, Iowa 1

AA—Tennessee 4, Jackson 1

Alberto Cabrera held Jackson (10-11) to three hits over seven innings and Arismendy Alcantara had three hits and drove in a pair to lead Tennessee (13-8)

At the Plate: Alcantara upped his average to .281 with three hits and 2 RBI (45) as the switch-hitter walked and scored a run. Alcantara is on pace to set season-highs in almost every offensive category except triples. Christian Villanueva knocked in his 45th run of the year while Jonathan Mota added two singles and scored twice.

On the Mound: Alberto Cabrera (9-3 3.20) made his sixth straight quality start as the 6-foot-4 right-hander allowed a solo homer and two singles in seven innings. C Chad Noble was promoted to AAA Iowa to replace C Luis Flores who went home to be with his wife for the birth of their first child.

High A—Daytona 2, Lakeland 1

Taylor Davis drove in the game-winning run and Pierce Johnson tossed seven strong innings to lead Daytona (12-7) over Lakeland (7-11).

At the Plate: Cubs made the most of their two extra base hits. Bijan Rademacher tripled and scored in the second and Taiwan Easterling doubled and scored the eventual winning run on Taylor Davis' RBI single in the seventh. Easterling added a single while Davis finished the day with two hits.

On the Mound: Pierce Johnson (2-1 3.04ERA/1.32 WHIP) only allowed one run in six innings as the right-hander scattered five hits and a walk. He fanned four and his GO/FO ratio was 6:5. In four starts at Daytona, Johnson line is (22IP, 21H 7ER, 8BB 18K, .269 BAA) Austin Reed has had some tough outings this season, especially to start the year, but the right-hander has made adjustments and extended his scoreless streak to 11.1 frames with three more against Lakeland. Reed fanned three and gave up two hits earning his third save.

Low A—South Bend 6, Kane County 1

South Bend (13-8) had 14 hits off Kane County (4-15) pitching as the SIlver Hawks won their second straight over the Cougars.

At the Plate: Cubs got eight hits but the only run scored in the third when Albert Almora doubled with two outs and scored on Daniel Vogelbach's single, his 57th RBI. Almora and Jeimer Candelario had two hits each while Giuseppe Papaccio doubled.

Cougars Notes: Cubs announced today that RHP Scott Baker will make a rehab start for Kane County on Sunday at West Michigan. Baker was signed as a free agent during the off-season and hasn't pitched for the Cubs as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. The Cubs said Baker will make four re-hab outings before he joins the team…...Gioskar Amaya's walk in the first was his first in 12 games and 55 PA

Short-Season—Vancouver 4, Boise 0

Boise (12-15) lost for the seventh time in eight games and their second straight at Vancouver (17-10).

At the Plate: Not much offense for the Hawks as they only managed six hits. Cael Brockmeyer (.250) and Trevor Gretzky (.257) had two hits apiece. Rony Rodriguez (.209) doubled and Daniel Lockhart (.321) added a single.

On the Mound: Rob Zastryzny got the start allowing a double in one inning with a strikeout. Zastryzny, who has the ability to add and subtract from his fastball, was throwing 89-92. James Pugliese (2-2 3.30 ERA) went four innings but didn't have his best stuff as the right-hander allowed five hits and two walks. He recorded three strikeouts but four runs crossed the plate, two earned. Sam Wilson made his NWL debut tossing a scoreless sixth with a hit and one strikeout. Corbin Hoffner (1-0 2.04) worked two shutout innings with three strikeouts.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 6, Padres 2

Cubs offense pounded out 11 hits as Zak Blair had three singles and drove in two runs in the win over the Padres.

At the Plate: Zak Blair was on base four times (three hits and a walk) scoring once and raising his average to .367. Rashad Crawford had his best game as a pro (2012-11th round) with two triples, three runs, a RBI, and a walk. Yasiel Balaguert stayed hot as he waits for Boise to get back to the states with a pair of doubles and a RBI. Kelvin Freeman is starting to get comfortable in the box as the 6-foot-5 first baseman had two hits and is 5-14 after starting the year 1-19. Start looking for Freeman to launch some balls out of the park as he hit 16 his senior year at North Carolina A & T.

On the Mound: Juan Paniagua made his 2013 stateside debut after visa issues kept him in the Dominican to start the season. The 23-year-old fanned four in three innings allowing two hits. I don't expect Paniagua, a 1.5 million signee last year, to spend much time in Mesa before he is re-assigned—with Kane County a likely stop. Zak Hermans is another pitcher wanting to get out of Mesa as the 2013 draft pick made his case fanning three in two perfect innings for his first pro win. Luis Guillen blanked the Padres for two innings and Alex Santana finished up allowing two runs on three hits.

Cubs Notes: 3B Josh Vitters was assigned to Arizona on a rehab assignment from AAA Iowa. Vitters was in the lineup and went 0-2 with a walk.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 5, Orioles II 2

Cubs (22-10) raced out to an early lead and held the Orioles (13-20) to three hits.

At the Plate: Roberto Caro (.281) and Dalfis Ortiz (.333) continue to pace the Cubs offense as the duo had two hits apiece and each drove in a run. Caro stole a base (9) and scored twice. Antonio Valerio (.263) and Jenner Emeterio (.242) both knocked in runs.

On the Mound: LHP Frailin Figueroa, 18, (3-0 1.35) got the win allowing only a solo homer in five innings with five punchouts. Yomar Morel (0-0 0.00) tossed three scoreless innings to start the game with 5K. RHP Luis Escanio (0-0 3.38) got the final two outs for his first save.

Venezuelan Summer League—Cubs 3, Mariners 1

The Cubs (23-24) knocked off the first-place Mariners (35-12) making the most of their four hits.

At the Plate: Roney Alcala (.355/.388/.533) continued his torrid pace in the VSL with a first-inning single that plated Arnaldo Calero (.261/.304/.389), who was hit by a pitch. The Cubs loaded the bases on three singles in the second but only got one run and that scored on a wild pitch. Two errors in the fourth led to the Cubs final run. Victor Gomez (.273/.304/.432) singled and scored twice.

On the Mound: Four Cubs pitchers held the M's to one run as Enrique De Los Rio (2-0 0.95) tossed three scoreless frames to start the game. Mauro Vides (0-1 6.95) pitched the fourth allowing two walks and a hit but kept the M's off the board. Francisco Carrillo (6-3 2.50) allowed the only run but got the win striking out four in three innings. Alberto Diaz (3-0 2.12) worked the final two frames for his first save./P>
