Cubs July 18 Minor League Recap

With all the all-star breaks over in the minors, the Cubs affiliates were back in action Thursday night as Boise won its sixth straight and Donnie Murphy paced Iowa's rally.

AAA—Iowa 6, Round Rock 3

Iowa (49-50) rallied with four runs in the 8th to beat Round Rock (54-45).

At the Plate: Donnie Murphy hit a two-run homer (11) in the 6th and added a two-run double in the I-Cubs four-run 8th. Ty Wright smacked a two-run double. Logan Watkins was 1-3 and scored twice. Ja-Hoon Ha was 0-3 and is now hitting .213 in 21 games.

On the Mound: Yoanner Negrin (3-3 4.57 ERA) got the win in relief tossing a scoreless inning with two strikeouts. The Cubs used five pitchers in the victory as Guillermo Moscoso (7-5 4.15) allowed three runs in five innings with five strikeouts. Marcus Hatley (2-1 4.50) blanked the Express in the sixth while Eduardo Sanchez (1-1 4.06) fanned the side in the 8th for his third hold. Brian Schlitter (0-1 1.52) continues to excel as Iowa's closer ending the game with three strikeouts, his 12th save.

Cubs Notes: RHP Esmailin Caridad (3-3 5.02 ERA/1.57 WHIP) was released by the Cubs and RHP Alberto Cabrera was promoted to Iowa. C Luis Flores was taken off the paternity list and C Chad Noble was sent back to Tennessee.

AA—Jacksonville 7, Tennessee 6

Tennessee (16-9) scored five times in the eighth but fell to Jacksonville (14-11).

At the Plate: Nate Samson (.333/.333/.500) got the Smokies on the board with a RBI double scoring Rafael Lopez in the fifth. Tennessee tallied five runs in the 8th as Rubi Silva (.277/.299/.475) had the big hit in the inning, a two-run triple. Christian Villanueva (.257/.311/.447) and Chad Noble (.247/.272/.299) had RBI groundouts and Lopez capped off the inning with a solo homer. The Smokies were 2-13 with RISP.

On the Mound: Eric Jokisch (8-8 3.31 ERA) fanned six but gave up five hits, three walks, and allowed three run in five innings. Marcos Mateo tossed a scoreless inning in his second game. P.J.Francescon allowed four runs in .2 innings while Hunter Cervenka (1.1 IP) and Kevin Rhoderick (1 IP) blanked the Suns.

Smokies Notes: All-Star pitcher Alberto Cabrera was promoted to Iowa and Dae-Eun Rhee was taken off the DL after making rehab starts with Mesa and Boise.

High A—Daytona

The Cubs were rained out.

Low A—Great Lakes 3, Kane County 2

Great Lakes (17-10) scored twice in the fifth and hung on to beat Kane County (5-20).

At the Plate: Kane County only had five hits and scored both of their runs in the sixth. Kevin Encarnacion singled and scored on Gioskar Amaya's triple. Daniel Vogelbach (2-4) followed with a base hit to plate Amaya for his 59th RBI.

On the Mound: Jose Rosario (0-6 5.26) blanked the Loons for four innings but gave up three hits and two runs in the fifth. He walked four and fanned three. Sheldon McDonald (0-0 0.64) went two innings allowing an unearned run and Stephen Perakslis (1-3 3.53) threw two scoreless frames.

Cougars Notes: LHP Matt Iannazzo was promoted to Kane County from Boise for his second stint in the MWL. Iannazzo was 1-1 with a 3.68 ERA in four games…..LHP Brian Smith was put on the disabled list…...RHP Scott Baker will make his second rehab start on Friday night at Fifth Bank Ballpark as he makes his way back to the majors after recovering from Tommy John Surgery.

Short-Season—Boise 3, Everett 2

Boise (18-16) scored the winning runs on a throwing error to beat Everett (22-12) for their sixth straight win.

At the Plate: Cael Brockmeyer went 2-3 and scored the winning run when the catcher's throw sailed into left field also scoring Rony Rodriguez on the play. Brockmeyer has a six-game hitting streak and is hitting .313 in his last 10 games. Carlos Penalver was 1-3 and extended his hitting streak to five games. Shawon Dunston was 1-3 to up his hit streak to four games.

On the Mound: Scott Frazier (1-1 3.12) earned his first pro win as the sixth-round pick from Pepperdine worked two innings with four strikeouts. He allowed four hits and two runs in the seventh. Jasvir Rakkar worked a 1-2-3 ninth with two punchouts for his first save. Rob Zastryzny (2 IP 1H) Sam Wilson (2IP 3K) and Zack Godley (2IP 2K) blanked the AquaSox for the first six innings.

Hawks Notes: LHP Matt Iannazzo was promoted to Kane County and no corresponding move was made.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 3, Royals 2

Xavier Batista doubled home Francisco Sanchez in the top of the ninth to give the Cubs (11-12) the win over the Royals (8-15).

At the Plate: Cubs only got six hits but a walk to Sanchez and Batista's double gave the Cubs the victory. Sanchez scored the Cubs first run when he singled, advance to third on a passed ball and a groundout, and crossed home on Garrett Schlecht's sacrifice fly. The Cubs tied the game in the sixth when Jeffrey Baez doubled and scored on Jesse Hodges' two-out single.

On the Mound: The Cubs used six pitchers as Orbandy Rodriguez got the win pitching a scoreless eighth. David Villegas earned his fourth save with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth. Tyler Ihrig fanned four in two innings, Trevor Graham tossed two shutout frames and Josh Davis threw 1.2 innings of scoreless ball

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 11, Mets I 5

Cubs pounded out 10 hits and whipped the Mets

At the Plate: Shamil Ubiera knocked in four and had his third straight multi-hit game as the 20-year-old outfielder is hitting .342 in his last 10 games raising his line to (.269/.344/.373). Jhonny Pena (.213/.304/.315) had two hits and Varonex Cuevas (.245/.354/.318) was 2-3 with a double and three runs. Robert Caro, 19, (.270/.380/.426) was 1-3 with two walks and continues to excel in the leadoff spot with his 11th stolen base. Dalfis Oritz (.328/.394/.522) was 1-3, scored twice, and swiped his 12th base.

On the Mound: Jose Paulino (4-2 3.13 ERA/1.11 WHIP) was dealing as the 18-year-old lefty fanned 10 Mets for his fourth win. He gave up four hits and two runs, one earned and didn't walk a hitter. He has 43 K in 31.2 IP in seven games. Jeffry Hernandez (1-0 3.38.) worked two innings allowing three unearned runs and two hits, including a homer. Jesus Pereyra worked a scoreless ninth.
