Cubs July 24 Minor League Recap

Dae-Eun Rhee won his first game since April as the right-hander fanned six in five innings in Tennessee's 6-1 win over Huntsville. Javier Baez hit his 23rd HR of the season.

AAA—New Orleans 2, Iowa 1—10 innings

New Orleans (52-53) used a walk, a sacrifice bunt, and a two-out single to beat Iowa (50-55) in extra innings.

At the Plate: Iowa tied the game in the 9th as singles by Luis Flores, Ty Wright and Logan Watkins loaded the bases, and pinch runner Justin Grimm (Yes, the pitcher acquired in the Matt Garza trade) scored on Donnie Murphy's groundout. Brad Nelson went 3-5 and Murphy singled, extending his hitting streak to 11 games. 3B Mike Olt made his Cubs debut going 1-5 with a single and three strikeouts. Cubs had 11 hits but were 2-11 with RISP and stranded 11.

On the Mound: Brooks Raley (6-7 4.83 ERA) pitched a good game allowing three hits and three walks in seven innings with six strikeouts. Raley threw 88 pitches, giving up a solo homer. Eduardo Sanchez (1-1 3.71) tossed two scoreless frames and Yoanner Negrin (3-4 4.69) took the loss yielding the winning run in the 10th.

AA—Tennessee 6, Huntsville 1

Tennessee blasted three homers and Dae-Eun Rhee won his first game since April as the Smokies beat Huntsville.

At the Plate: Justin Bour (11), Rafael Lopez (7) and Javier Baez (6) all smacked solo homers to lead the Smokies offense. Rubi Silva and Jonathan Mota added RBI. Baez, Bour and John Andreoli all finished with two hits

On the Mound: Dae-Eun Rhee (2-0 1.89 ERA) took the hill for his second start since coming back from an arm injury and the right-hander earned the win working five innings with six strikeouts. He allowed a run on five hits and three walks throwing 81 pitches, 51 for strikes. Rhee was as impressive as any Tennessee starter in his first two games back in April (10 IP, 3H 1ER in two starts). Hunter Cervenka, Yeiper Castillo, Zach Rosscup and Tony Zych all threw a scoreless inning.

Smokies Notes: RHP Chang-Yong Lim was promoted from Daytona to Tennessee.

High A—Daytona, St. Lucie

Was rained out and will not be made up. The Cubs embark on their longest road trip of the season, an 8-game trek that includes stops at Palm Beach (July 25-28) and Fort Myers (July 29-Aug. 1).

Low A—Beloit 5, Kane County 1

A pair of homers by 3B Renato Nunez gave Beloit the win over Kane County (7-23)

At the Plate: Reggie Golden's two-out RBI double in 7th plated the Cougars only run. After opening the game with 12 straight outs, Kane County got three singles in the fifth but couldn't score. Golden and Rock Shoulders had two hits. Daniel Vogelbach's nine-game hitting streak was snapped.

On the Mound: Scott Baker's third rehab start was a lot like his first two—he didn't miss many bats. The right-hander tossed three innings allowing three runs, including a two-run homer. He walked two and fanned two. Baker's fastball was in the mid 80s topping at 89 according to Cougars radio broadcaster Wayne Randazzo. Nathan Dorris worked the a scoreless fourth as Baker pitch count was reached early and Jose Rosario finished the final four frames fanning five while surrendering a two-run homer.

Cougars Notes: Kane County has placed LHP Matt Iannazzo on the 7-day disabled list and LHP Al Yevoli has joined the Cougars roster. Yevoli, 23, was signed to a minor league contract by the Cubs this past weekend and most recently pitched with the independent Washington (PA) Wild Things. Over his last 14 outings with Washington, the left-hander struck out 21 batters in 17 innings of relief. Yevoli helped lead Tennessee Wesleyan to the NAIA national championship in 2012.

Short-Season—Eugene 5, Boise 1

Eugene hit a pair of homers and held Boise to just one run despite nine hits.

At the Plate: Yasiel Balaguert knocked in Jacob Hannemann on a groundout to score the Hawks only run of the night. They stranded nine runners and were 2-11 with RISP. Kris Bryant had his first NWL hit while Jacob Rogers had two singles to raise his average to.299.

On the Mound: Boise's ran it scoreless streak to 31 innings but the Emeralds scored twice in the fourth off Loiger Pardon (3.2 IP, 4H 2ER, 1BB 1K). Jasvir Rakkar surrendered two solo homers and Eddie Orozco gave up a run on three hits in the eighth.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs

Had the day off.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 8, Cardinals 2

The Cubs (30-13) hammered out 14 hits in the win over the Cardinals (24-19)

At the Plate: Dalfis Ortiz (.345) had a big game going 4-5 with a RBI and three runs while Adonis Paula (.253) was 3-4 and scored twice. Jose Paniagua (.192) knocked in three runs with two singles and Shamil Ubiera (.266) had two RBI going 1-3 with a run.

On the Mound: Frailin Figueroa (4-0 1.23 ERA) got the win allowing two hits and a run in 4.1 innings. The 18-year-old fanned four and walked three. RHP Yoma Morel, 19, recored his first save holding the Cards scoreless the final 2.2 IP with 2 Ks. RHP Amailo Reyes, 22, made his 2013 debut allowing a run in two innings on two hits

Venezuelan Summer League—Phillies 5, Cubs 3

Phillies (29-29) scored two times in the sixth to down the Cubs (30-27)

At the Plate: Cubs were held to four hits and scored all their runs in the sixth. 3B Roney Alcala (.332/.364/.498) had a RBI single and the other two runs scored on wild pitches as the Cubs drew four walks. Alcala finished with two hits.

On the Mound: Victor Garcia (2-2 4.53ERA/1.25WHIP) only got one out allowing four hits and and three runs, two earned. Chris Pieters (1-5 15.91 ERA) took the loss giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits and a walk in the sixth.
