Cubs August 7 Minor League Recap

Kane County and Mesa won their games but the Cubs got swept by the Mariners in the Venezuelan Summer League Championship series falling 11-8 in 12 innings. Daytona finally got to play but lost in extra innings after an hour rain delay.

Roster Moves

Cubs 2013 Second-round pick Rob Zastryzny was promoted from Boise to Kane County and is scheduled to make his MWL debut on Friday night.......The Tennessee Smokies sent OF Johermyn Chavez on a rehab assignment to Mesa. Chavez was placed on the DL back on May May 9 after he broke his hand after getting hit by a pitch. Chavez made his debut on the mound Wednesday night in Mesa pitching for the first time in his career......Zak Hermans and Anthony Prieto were both placed on the 7-day DL in mesa......Trey McNutt was sent to Mesa for a rehab assignment and he started Wednesday night's game.....RHP Jose Arias, who started the year in Kane County and went on the DL, was sent from mesa to Boise.


Had the day off as they ended their 12-game road trip yesterday in Tacoma. RHP Kyle Hendricks is scheduled to make his AAA debut on Thursday night. Hendricks dominated the Southern League going 10-3 with a 1.85 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. He threw 126.1 innings with 101 K and 26 BB in AA.


Had the day off as they return home from a five-day trip at Jacksonville.

High A—Clearwater 6, Daytona 5—10 innings

Clearwater rallied from a 5-2 deficit and beat Daytona in 10 innings.

At the Plate: Wes Darvill (.244/.329/.388) smacked a three-run homer (3) in the third SS Elliot Soto delivered a two-run single in the seventh to fuel the offense. Zeke DeVoss (.259/.407/.375) was on base five straight times with three hits and two walks. It was the 25th straight game he has reached base. Anthony Giansanti (.278/.340/.344) and Pin-Chieh Chen (.277/.362/.357) both had two hits.

On the Mound: C.J. Edwards made his second start in the Cubs organization (20th of the season) after fanning eight in five shutout innings in his debut back on July 28. Edwards allowed a leadoff infield single in the first and then retired the next three hitters, one on strikes, to end the inning. Edwards threw only one inning as a rain delay that lasted just over an hour ended his night. Yao-Lin Wang (3-3 3.54) allowed a run on three hits in three innings and Lendy Castillo (1-0 1.80) surrendered a run in two innings. Jeffrey Lorick (3-0 3.44) tossed three innings but gave up three runs on four hits and two walks, getting tagged with his second blown save. Austin Reed (2-1 4.29) took the loss yielding the winning run in the 10th on a walk and a hit as the run scored on a grounder to Wes Darvill, beating the throw home.

Cubs Notes: Zeke DeVoss reached base for the 25th straight game and heading into Wednesday night's game was hitting .287/.451/.414 during the streak.

Low A—Kane County 7, Burlington 4

Kane County scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth and downed Burlington in the opener of the three-game series at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

At the Plate: Pinch-hitter Wilson Contreras (.240/.310/.429) tripled with one-out scoring Marco Hernandez (.241/.280/.313) to put the Cougars ahead for good. The Bees uncorked two wild pitches to plate two more runs in the three-run 8th. Jeimer Candelario (.256/.343/.394), Carlos Escobar (.263/.323/.412) and Jose Dore (.222/.300/.444) all had two hits as the Cougars had 12 on the night. Gioskar Amaya (.270/.343/.400) went 1-2 with a run, RBI, and three walks.

On the Mound: Michael Heesch (3-9 4.00 ERA) made his 18th start of the year, second on the team, pitching into the sixth, allowing seven hits and three walks. He fanned two but the Bees scored three times, two of the runs earned. Sheldon McDonald (2-0 1.42 ERA) got the win after allowing the tying run in the eighth. He finished with a line of 2.2 IP, 1H, 1ER, 1BB, 4K. Stephan Perakslis (1-3 3.06) fanned two in the ninth for his fifth save.


The Hawks finished their all-star break and host Vancouver Thursday night.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 11, Brewers 4

Cubs (18-20) used a seven-run fifth to beat the Brewers (18-20)

At the Plate: Cubs pounded out 11 hits, including the first pro hit for Tyler Alamo, a RBI pinch-hit single in the fifth. Charcer Burks (.277), Kelvin Freeman (.307) and Albert Mineo (.222) all had two hits. Mineo knocked in three while Mark Malave (.250), Francisco Sanchez (.214), and Trevor Stevens (.105) had two each. The Cubs coaxed nine walks, with Kevin Brown (.192) drawing three free passes.

On the Mound: Erick Leal (2-2 3.48 ERA) may be moving closer to a promotion to Boise as the 18-year-old right-hander held the Brewers scoreless in 4.1 innings to earn the win. Leal fanned five and walked one. Trey McNutt made a rehab appearance fanning two in his only inning. Johermyn Chavez has played his entire professional career in the outfield but the right-hander took the mound Wednesday night. Chavez was assigned to Mesa for a rehab assignment. He retired two hitters, one on strikes, but gave up a run on a it and a walk before being relieved by Leal in the second....Ethan Elias (1-1 9.00) allowed two runs in 2.2 frames as he continues to struggle.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 6, Braves 2

Cubs (38-18) pitching held the Braves (24-31) scoreless for eight innings and the offense knocked out 13 hits.

At the Plate: Jenner Emeterio, Robert Garcia, Antonio Valerio, and Roberto Caro all had two hits while Valerio and Jose Paniagua both knocked in a pair. Varonex Cuevas and Adonis Paula both had a RBI.

On the Mound: Jose Zapata (4-0 2.25 ERA) threw one-hit ball for six innings with four strikeouts and a walk. Pedro Silverio worked two no-hit innings and Luiz Escanio gave up two runs in the ninth on four hits.

Venezuelan Summer League Playoffs, Game 2—Mariners 11, Cubs 8—12 innings

The Mariners captured the 2013 Venezuelan Summer League Championship beating the Cubs 11-8 in 12 innings to win the series in a two-game sweep..

At the Plate: The Cubs offense rallied from a 7-1 deficit scoring four runs in their final three at-bats to send the game into extra innings. They finished with 14 hits and went 7-22 with RISP. Arnaldo Calero was 2-5 with three RBI and a run while Ricardo Marcano went 3-7 with three runs. Roney Alcala and Jhonny Pereda both had two hits and knocked in a run.

On the Mound: Cubs pitching surrendered 18 hits and didn't get any help from the defense as they committed five errors as six of the runs were unearned. The Cubs used seven pitchers and Chris Pieters took the loss striking out one hitter and the other reached on an error and scored the go-ahead run. Alberto Diaz (1.2 IP) and Yomar Pacheco (2 IP) kept the M's off the scoreboard and each fanned two hitters.
