Cubs August 13 Minor League Recap

Dan Vogelbach and Kris Bryant both homered in their Daytona debuts as the Cubs split a doubleheader with Clearwater. Pierce Johnson had another quality outing for Daytona and Kyle Hendricks made his second AAA start. Boise erupted for 12 runs in their win over Eugene.

Roster Moves

Big news of the day is Theo Epstein telling reporters that Jorge Soler was still in a walking boot and it was unlikely he would return to Daytona before the end of the season. He said Soler was on schedule to participate in the Arizona Fall League........C Cael Brockmeyer was sent back to Boise after playing two games at AAA Iowa. He went 1-6 with a walk and three strikeouts.

AAA—Sacramento 6, Iowa 4

Sacramento (68-56) scored two runs in the top of the eighth to even the seise with Iowa (57-67).

At the Plate: Iowa had 11 hits and scored three runs in the second but couldn't hold on. Edgar Gonzalez, Dave Sappelt and Chad Noble all had two hits. Edwin Maysonet knocked in two while Noble and Gonzalez had one each. Josh Vitters was 1-3 with a double and Mike Olt went 1-4.

On the Mound: Kyle Hendricks made his second AAA start throwing 102 pitches in five innings. He surrendered four earned runs on eight hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. Marcus Hatley tossed two scoreless frames with three walks and three strikeouts. Alberto Cabrera took the loss allowing two runs in the eighth and finished with a line of 2IP, 4H 2ER, 3BB 3K.

AA—Tennessee 4, Chattanooga 1

Tennessee (30-20, 64-55) kept Chattanooga (16-34, 51-69) off the board for eight innings won the opening game of the series.

At the Plate: The Smokies got on the board in the second as 3B Christian Villanueva ripped his Southern League leading 33rd double and scored on C Rafael Lopez's RBI single. Tennessee scored three times in the seventh, two coming on OF Rubi Silva's two-run single. 2B Arismendy Alcantara knocked in his 60th run of the season with a RBI single. OF Matt Szczur was 2-3 with a walk, raising his average to .283. SS Javier Baez was 1-3 with a walk and OF Brett Jackson went 0-4 and is hitting .186 since joining Tennessee.

On the Mound: Eduardo Figueroa (1-1 3.38 ERA) earned his first AA win tossing five shutout innings. He allowed six hits and a walk and threw 75 pitches. Hunter Cervenka (4-1 3.58) threw two scoreless innings and Dyan Diaz (0-0 5.86) allowed an earned run in his two innings of work with three strikeouts.

High A—Game 1—Daytona 5, Clearwater 0; Game 2—Clearwater 3, Daytona 2

Dan Vogelbach and Kris Bryant both homered in their Daytona (27-16, 62-47) debuts but the Cubs settled with a split with Clearwater (22-26, 57-59).

At the Plate: GAME 1—Daniel Vogelbach didn't take long to make his presence felt hitting a two-run blast in his second at-bat for a 2-0 lead in the fourth. Bijan Rademacher extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single in the fifth. Rademacher scored on Zeke DeVoss' single for a 3-0 lead and Daytona added two runs in the sixth on a RBI single from Anthony Giansanti and a sacrifice fly off the bart of Chadd Krist. DeVoss extended his on-base streak to 30 games with a walk and a single. Vogelbach and Giansanti both had two hits. GAME 2— Kris Bryant ran his hitting streak to 16 games blasting a solo homer in the fourth. The second-round pick was 1-3 and didn't play in game one. Wes Darvill was 2-3 and scored in the ninth on Yaniel Cabezas' RBI double but the Cubs rally came up short as DeVoss made the final out to end his 30-game on-base streak.

On the Mound: GAME 1—Pierce Johnson (5-1 2.16) held the Threshers scoreless for 5.2 innings as the right-hander fanned seven. He allowed four hits and walked three, leaving in the sixth. Armando Rivero (0-0 2.70) had his fastball hitting 95 mph in the ninth getting the final four outs for his first save at Daytona. He allowed a hit and fanned one. GAME 2—Yao-Lin Wang (3-4 3.53) fanned eight in 5.1 innings but allowed two runs on four hits, including a homer. Zach Cates (9-9 4.35) got the final five outs for Daytona but gave up a run on a hit and a walk with a punchout.

Cubs Notes: Cubs' pitching recorded their 14th shutout of the year in the first game of the DH.......Great story told by Daytona play-by-play announcer Robbie Aaron. C.J. Edwards at his locker between games of the DH and Cubs manager Dave Keller walks in "Hey skip, what's up?", said the String Bean Slinger. Keller's response, "Hopefully, your weight."

Low A—Kane County

Had the day off.

Short-Season—Boise 12, Eugene 1

Kris Bryant may be gone but the offense keeps on rolling as Boise blasted Eugene.

At the Plate: The Hawks got 15 hits and Yasiel Balaguert did all the damage Boise would need with a three-run homer in the first, his 7th. Balaguert had two hits, scored three times and walked twice. David Bote was 3-4 with 4 RBI and two runs, with a pair of doubles. Jordan Hankins was 3-5 with a RBI while Jacob Rogers and Daniel Lockhart had two hits apiece.

On the Mound: Paul Blackburn (1-2 3.09) earned his first NWL victory tossing three shutout innings allowing four hits and a walk with a strikeout. Duane Underwood (2-3 5.36) had another quality outing yielding a run on three hits and a walk. Trey Masek fanned three in two no-hit frames while Eduardo Orozco pitched a scoreless ninth.

Hawks Notes: Boise play-by-play announcer Mike Safford said Shawon Dunston could return to the lineup Friday after being out with a quad injury.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs

Had the day off.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 10, Rojos 1

The Cubs (42-18) won their fifth straight with a 12-hit attack to beat Rojos (14-47)

At the Plate: Jenner Emoter (.242) and Robert Garcia (.277) had three hits and the duo combined for 3 RBI to lead the offense. Antonio Gonzalez (.190) drove in three with a tripe and a single while Shamil Ubiera (.293) was 2-4 with two runs and a run knocked in.

On the Mound: The Cubs used five pitchers as Jose Morel went three innings in the start holding Rojos scoreless. Yomar Morel (1-0 0.83) earned the win tossing two innings of one-hit ball. Jerry Hernandez (1 IP) Frailin Figueroa (2IP, 1ER) and Enderson Mercedes (1IP) all saw action.
