Its no surprise that James Pugliese has been promoted from Boise to Kane County. The 21-year-old right-hander went 4-3 in 12 games for Boise with a 2.32 ERA in a team-high 62 innings. He had an impressive 1.08 WHIP with 6.8 K/9 and 1.7 BB/9.......Cael Brockmeyer got hit in the head with a baseball last night and will have to go on the 7-day disabled list due to a minor league rule regarding concussions......The corresponding moves from Kane County and Boise have not been announced.
AAA—New Orleans 3, Iowa 2
New Orleans (65-65) tied the game in the seventh and won it in the bottom of the 8th sending Iowa (58-72) to their fifth straight loss.
On the Mound: With Chris Rusin and Jake Arrieta moved up to the big leagues, Casey Coleman has retuned to a starter's role in the minors. Coming into the season, Coleman had started all 80 games of his minor league career. He's also spent parts of the last three season in Chicago as both a starter (26 G) and reliever (22 G) compiling a 7-13 record with a 5.76 ERA. After 37 games out of the pen, Coleman made his first AA start of the season Aug. 14 vs. Sacramento tossing five shutout innings with five strikeouts for the victory. Coleman is not on the 40-man roster so its likely Iowa pitchers Alberto Cabrera, Justin Grimm, Brooks Raley and Eduardo Sanchez will get the September call-up........Coleman (4-3 3.03) took the mound Monday night looking to help snap the I-Cubs four-game losing streak. The right-hander did his part allowing a run in six innings throwing 78 pitches. He allowed five hits and a walk with three strikeouts....Alberto Cabrera (0-2 6.61) gave up solo homer in the seventh that tied the game at 2-2. Zach Rosscup (0-1 0.00) started the 8th but only retired one hitter as he surrendered two walks and a hit. Marcos Mateo (0-0 1.93) came in with the bases loaded and got a force out at home on a grounder but a throwing error by Luis Flores trying to complete the double play at first allowed the go-ahead run to score.
AA—Tennessee 9, Birmingham 2
Tennessee's bats pounded Birmingham (71-56) pitching for 17 hits as the Smokies (69-56) beat the Barons for the second straight day.
At the Plate: Rubi Silva (.288/.312/.481) led the offense going 3-5 with 2 RBI and two runs while Arismendy Alcantara (.268/.344/.443) hit his first homer since July 10 finishing 2-5 with 2 RBI. Javier Baez (.298/.362/.631) went 3-4 with a pair of doubles and a walk. Matt Szczur (.281/.351/.368), Justin Bour (.244/.326/.478) and John Andreoli (.295/.357/.410) all had two hits as every starter had at least one hit.
On the Mound: Dae-Eun Rhee has struggled in his return after going on the DL on April 15. n six games since returning from DL, he's allowed five homers in 31.2 IP with 12 walks and 30 hits. He was sent to Mesa on a rehab assignment on June 27 appearing in two games (4IP) in Mesa and threw eight innings in two games in Boise. Rhee (5-1 3.49) had his best outing since April throwing 86 pitches in seven innings. He allowed two runs on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts.....A.J. Morris (4-2 5.03) finished off the Barons throwing no-hit ball for the final two innings with a walk and a strikeout.
The Cubs had the day off but the good news keeps coming out of Daytona as Kris Bryant was named Florida State League Player of the Week. In his first seven games in High A, the second overall pick in the 2013 draft hit .360/.385/.760 with three homers and five RBI. It was the second straight week Bryant has earned the award hitting .525/.565/.1.000 in his final week at Boise in the NWL. In his 27 minor league games at Mesa, Boise and Daytona, Bryant has 7 HR, 23 RBI, 10 2B, 17 R with a slash line of .344/.391/.688.
Low A—Clinton 9, Kane County 2
Clinton (62-63) scored four runs in the top of the first and beat Kane County (50-71) for the second straight game.
At the Plate: The Cougars only runs of the night came in the fourth on a two-run single by Rock Shoulders (.253/.347/.446), now with 65 RBI. Jeimer Candelario (.253/.347/.446) had two hits, including a double and scored once. Giuseppe Papaccio (.260/.317/.333) and Brad Zapenas (250/.400/.281) both singled.
On the Mound: Starling Peralta was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Rule 5 draft in December and spent spring training trying to make the D-Backs opening day roster but was returned to Chicago. The 22-year-old started the season in Daytona appearing in five games but he allowed 20 earned runs in 14 IP surrendering six homers. He was placed on the DL and assigned to Arizona. He pitched in five games in Mesa allowing 11 hits in 13.1 IP with 14 K and a 1.35 ERA. After spending all of 2012 in the MWL with Peoria, Peralta returned to the league with Kane County on July 28 and is 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA in four games. He's walked 13 in 19 innings but only allowed three earned runs and hasn't allowed a homer since leaving Daytona.......It was another first inning struggle for Peralta (2-1 4.63) as the Lumberkings sent nine men to the plate scoring four times. He finished with a line of 4.1 IP, 9H 9ER, 4BB 1K. Justin Amlung (4-4 4.14) tossed 2.2 innings of no-hit ball with a walk. Al Yevoli (0-0 4.73) threw two more scoreless frames with two strikeouts.
Cougars Notes: Former Kane County outfielder Trey Martin, who had shoulder surgery in May to repair a recurring labrum problem, took batting practice today in Mesa . "First BP on the field since surgery" Martin tweeted.
Short-Season—Tri-City 6, Boise 3
Tri-Cit (29-34) beat Boise (35-28) for the third straight time scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth.
At the Plate: The Hawks were held to five hits. Rony Rodriguez (.262/.338/.418) singled and scored in the second on Daniel Lockhart's RBI groundout. They took a 3-1 lead in the third as Carlos Penalver (.259/.325/.352) and Kevin Encarnacion (.327/.420/.478) opened the inning with singles and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Shawon Dunston (.312/.405/.404). Penalver scored on Yasiel Balaguert's (.273/.347/.460) ground out and Encarnacion raced home on a RBI single by Jacob Rogers (.278/.392/.403). A single by Lockhart (.293/.345/.332) in the fourth would be the last hit for Boise.
On the Mound: Duane Underwood (2-3 4.86 ERA/1.64 WHIP) didn't allow an earned run but three runs scored on just two hits and three walks of the right-hander. Underwood din't get much help as the Hawks committed three errors. The right-hander finished with a line of 4.1 IP, 2H, 3R 0ER, 3B, 1K.... RHP Zack Godley (2-0 2.08/1.06) did a great job out of the bullpen tossing 2.2 frames of no-hit ball. He walked two and fanned three....Scott Frazier (1-2 2.89/1.06) only got one out in the eighth allowing three runs on two hits and two walks....Jasvir Rakkar (2-1 3.72/1.03) got the final two outs of the eighth, one on strikes.
Arizona Rookie League—A's 5, Cubs 4
The Cubs (24-24) rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth but the A's (21-27) scored twice in the bottom of the inning for the walk-off win.
At the Plate: Kelvin Freeman (.283/.388/.321) plated the first run in the fourth, a sacrifice fly scoring Jeffrey Baez (.296/.367/.401), who led off the inning with a double. The Cubs loaded the bases in the ninth with two outs on an error, hit-by-pitch, and a walk. Kevin Brown (.229/.373/.313) cleared them with a double to put the Cubs ahead 4-3. Charcer Burks (.283/.356/.315) and Baez both finished with two hits.
On the Mound: Outfielder turned pitcher Johermyn Chavez (0-0 4.91 ERA) allowed a hit as he made his first start as a professional working a scoreless first. Daury Torrez (3-2 3.77) yielded three runs, two earned, on six hits in four innings. He fanned three and didn't walk a hitter.....After a couple of shaky outings, Trevor Clifton (0-0 8.53) threw two shutout innings with two punchouts....Trey Lang (0-1 6.75) worked a 1-2-3 eight but a leadoff walk in the ninth started the A's rally. A single, a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk loaded the bases. The A's scored the tying run on a fielder's chick grounder and after a wild pitch and another intentional walk, delivered a walk-off single.
Dominican Summer League—Pirates II 2, Cubs 1
The Cubs (45-20) were blanked in the first seven innings in the loss to the Pirates (42-23).
On the Mound: Frailin Figueroa (4-1 1.44) took the loss allowing a run on three hits and four walks. He worked 4.1 frames and fanned four. Luis Hernandez, 18, (2-2 2.70) got the start holding the Pirates scoreless for 2.2 innings in his first action since July 23. Carlos Llano (6-1 3.08) allowed a run in two frames with four punchouts.
Cubs Notes: The Cubs have assigned SS Bryant Flete from the VSL to the DSL. Flete hit .271/.383/.356 with 17 steals and 45 runs in 67 games. He was second in the VSL with 41 BB. Flete, 20, came stateside this spring and participated in extended spring training before being sent to the VSL.
