The Cubs made it official on Tuesday sending RHP James Pugliese to Kane County. Boise also placed C Cale Brockmeyer on the disabled list with a concussion.... RHP Eddie Orozco was activated from his rehab assignment and added to the Boise roster from Kane County. Orozco had been pitching for Boise for his rehab....C Neftali Rosario, who had been on the disabled list, has been sent from Kane County to Boise. ....To make room for Pugliese on the roster, Kane County placed LHP Michael Heesch on the disabled list.
AAA—Iowa 3, New Orleans 0
Brooks Raley tossed eight shutout innings and Iowa (59-72) scored three runs on the top of the ninth to beat New Orleans and snap a five-game losing streak.
At the Plate: The Cubs made the most of their opportunity in the ninth when Julio Borbon led off with a walk. Edwin Maysonet laid down a sacrifice bunt and Borbon scored all the way from first on the play when the throw by the catcher ended up down the right field line. Brad Nelson followed two batters later with his 19th homer of the year. Maysonet had a double while J.C. Boscan and Mike Olt singled as Iowa only had five hits.
On the Mound: Brooks Raley (7-9 4.42 ERA) can lay claim to Iowa's workhorse for 2013 as the lefty leads the teams in starts and innings pitched. Raley' already made one start for Chicago so a September call-up is not out of the question. He's also had a good month of August with 13 K and 3 BB in 19 IP with a 2.84 ERA. Raley fired eight shutout innings for the second time in three starts holding the Zephyrs to three hits with six strikeouts. He threw 86 pitches and didn't walk a hitter.....Brian Schlitter recorded his 18th straight save fanning two in the ninth.
AA—Birmingham 2, Tennessee 1
Birmingham delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to beat Tennessee.
At the Plate: The only run of the night came in the sixth on Arismendy Alcantara's RBI double, scoring Matt Szczur (.281), who also doubled in the sixth. Tennessee only had five hits on the night as Rubi Silva (.288), Jonathan Mota (.274) and John Andreoli (.296) all singled. Andreoli extended his hitting streak to eight games.
On the Mound: Nicholas Struck (0-1 3.86) threw 94 pitches as the right-hander allowed an unearned run in 5.2 innings. He gave up four hits and two walks with three strikeouts. It was Struck's best outing since being demoted to AA. Hunter Cervenka (5-1 3.34) tossed 1.1 innings of no-hit ball allowing a walk with a strikeout....Armando Rivero got the Barons in order in the eighth but a leadoff single in the ninth scored after a sacrifice bunt and a single on a 3-2 count, hit-and-run with one out in the ninth.
High A—Daytona, Dunedin
A heavy rainstorm postponed the game at Dunedin and the two squads will play a doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at 5 p.m. EST.
Low A—Clinton 7, Kane County 4
Clinton (63-63) scored four times in the third and hung on for the win over Kane County (50-72) winning the four-game series.
At the Plate: Two RBI ground ball outs by Jeimer Candelario (.251) and Reggie Golden (.233), and a wild pitch plated the Cougars first three runs. Golden added a RBI infield single in the ninth. Kane County had 11 hits but went 2-11 with RISP and stranded eight. Giuseppe Papaccio (.273) was on base three times going 2-3 while Gioskar Amaya (.262) and Rock Shoulders (.255) had two hits.
On the Mound: Tyler Skulina, (0-2 9.31) the Cubs fourth-round pick in June, had another tough start in the MWL as Clinton roughed up the right-hander for the second time this year. Skulina allowed five runs on five hits and three walks in 2.1 innings.... Rob Zastryzny (1-0 0.93) surrendered his first run in the MWL in the longest outing of his pro career. He tossed 3.2 frames giving up five hits and a walk with one strikeout....Andrew McKirahan (2-0 3.52) fanned three in two no-hit innings.
Short-Season—Tri-City 5, Boise 4
Tri-City (30-34) beat Boise (35-29) for the fourth straight day.
At the Plate: Yasiel Balaguert (.277) went 2-4 with 2 RBI and Kevin Encarnacion (325) hit his 4th homer to lead the offense. The Hawks had nine hits and drew three walks but were 2-11 with RISP. Shawon Dunston (.315) went 2-5 and SS Carlos Penalver doubled and drove in a run. After hitting near .200 to start the season, Penalver has brought his average up to .260.
On the Mound: Dillon Maples (5-1 2.25) has his worst outing in the NWL as the Dust Devils scored five runs on six hits and four walks in four innings, Maples fanned three and hit two hitters...Corbin Hoffner fanned five in three shutout frames while Tyler Bremer struck out two in a scoreless eighth.
Arizona Rookie League—Giants 6, Cubs 4
Giants (37-12) scored five times in the top of the first and hung on for the win over the Cubs (24-25).
At the Plate: Charcer Burks (.289), Kelvin Freeman (.288), Trevor Stevens (.250) and Wilfredo Petit (.210) all had two hits as part of the Cubs 10-hit night. Rashard Crawford (1-3) knocked in a run as did Burks and Freeman.
On the Mound: Seventh-round pick David Garner (0-1 10.23) only retired one hitter as the right-hander got tagged for five runs on five hits and a walk. An error didn't help on a grounder by the second hitter of the game as the only out Garner got was on strikes. ...Tyler Ihrig (2-0 0.86) made the most of his early appearance, working 3.2 innings of shutout ball in his longest outing of his young pro career. He allowed three hits and fanned three...Josh Davis (3-0 3.38) allowed a run in his three innings of work on three hits. Orbandy Rodriguez (3-1 0.68) fanned three holding the Giants scoreless the final two innings.
Dominican Summer League—Pirates II 5, Cubs 0
The Pirates (43-23) swept the Cubs (45-21) in the two-game series and trail the Cubs by two games with four DSL games remaining.
At the Plate: The Cubs only had five hits as Jenner Emeterio (.254) was 2-4. Roney Alcala (.179), Luis Acosta (.118) and Robert Garcia (.253) all singled as the Cubs went without an extra base hit and were 0-2 in stolen base attempts.
On the Mound: Yomar Morel (1-1 1.69) took the loss allowing three earned runs in four innings. Morel kept the Pirates in check his first three frames but the Bucs used a hit batter, a walk and a triple to plate three runs in the frame. Jose Zapata (4-0 1.96) threw two scoreless innings to start the game while Luiz Escanio (1-1 2.36) allowed two runs in the eighth on two hits.
