Cubs August 21 Minor League Recap

Javier Baez had another big night going 4-4 with two homers and five RBI to help lead Tennessee to a 10-8 win over Birmingham. Boise snapped their four-game losing streak beating Salem-Kaiser.

AAA—Memphis 7, Iowa 1

Memphis (63-69) spoiled the opening night of Iowa's (59-73) nine-game home stand.

At the Plate: Iowa only had four hits as Luis Flores' (.218/.313/.335) RBI single in the fourth scored Brad Nelson (.262/.339/.463) for the only run of the night. Ty Wright (.263/.330/.419) had a one-out triple in the ninth but was stranded.

On the Mound: Yoanner Negrin (3-6 4.35 ERA) was solid for five innings allowing a run on four hits and a walk. He fanned two and threw 76 pitches in his 12th start of the season. Negrin hasn't had much success as a starter but he does have value as a bullpen arm and should get a chance to compete next spring. The 29-year-old was signed in July of 2011 out of Cuba and spent part of 2012 on loan to Tabasco in the Mexican League (7-6 3.12 ERA/104 IP).......For the fifth straight game Alberto Cabrera (0-3 8.31) allowed a run, this time four of them, all earned. The right-hander gave up five hits, including a homer, and walked one...Jeffry Antigua (2-2 6.06 ERA) allowed two earned runs on three hits in two innings....Marcus Hatley (2-1 3.93) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with a strikeout.

AA—Tennessee 10, Birmingham 8

Javier Baez hit two homers, went 4-4, and knocked in five runs as Tennessee (70-57) beat Birmingham (72-57) for the third time in four games.

At the Plate: The Smokies needed four runs in the top of the ninth to break a 6-6 tie. Baez (.307/.366/.659) put the Smokies ahead in the ninth with a sacrifice fly and Christian Villanueva (.264/.321/.465) added a two-run double, his Southern League leading 39th. Jonathan Mota (.273/.347/.406) capped off the frame with a RBI single. Baez hit a three-run shot in the third and added a solo blast in the 7th. Arismendy Alcantara (.271/.347/.448) had a productive day at the dish going 2-3 with two runs, a RBI, two walks, and his 28th stolen base. Brett Jackson (.200.,297/.215) had two hits, including a double, while Matt Szczur (.280/.349/.370) doubled and scored twice. Rafael Lopez (.259/.360/.416) was 1-3 with a RBI and a run.

On the Mound: I'll start with the good. Frank Batista (3-3 2.73) saved his 17th game allowing a hit in a scoreless ninth with a strikeout.....Matthew Loosen (1-3 7.36) fanned five in his 84-pitch, 5.2 inning start allowing three runs on five hits and two walks....P.J. Francescon had command issues walking three in 1.2 frames, allowing one run to score.....Tony Zych got charged with the blown save however a dropped fly ball by RF John Andreoli allowed two runs to score with two outs in the 8th. Zych (5-4 2.73) finished with a line of 0.2 IP, 3H 4R, 2ER, 1BB 1K.

Smokies Notes: Rafael Lopez reached base for the 21st straight game.....Looks like there may be some bad blood between the Smokies and Barons. In the top of the third, Birmingham pitcher Spencer Arroyo threw a pitch behind Tennessee catcher Luis Flores. The umpire quickly warned the pitcher and both benches. In the same at-bat, ball four was up and in at Flores' head but no action was taken by the ump who had just warned both benches two pitched before........The win was manager Buddy Bailey 1,700 victory as a minor league skipper per Tennessee Smokies.

High A—Game 1—Daytona vs. Dunedin—Postponed after one inning

The two clubs will complete the first game on Thursday beginning at 5 p.m. EST and then play a second game. The second game of the DH scheduled for Wednesday night will be made up as part of a DH on Aug. 27 at Daytona.

On the Mound: Ben Wells (8-6 3.39) has become overlooked in a organization that continues to add pitching prospects through the draft and trades. Still only 20-years-old, Wells doesn't posses over powering stuff but he does know how to pitch to contact and keep the ball down in the zone. He's had a solid year (109 IP/1.23 WHIP) in what amounts to his first full-season as a professional after two stints on the DL set him back last year at Peoria. A seventh-round pick in 2010 out of Bryant High School in Arkansas, the 6-foot-2 right-hander needs to lower his walk rate of 3.3 per 9. In his last eight games heading into Wednesday night, Wells went 4-1 with a 2.61 ERA in 41.1 IP. He's walked 14 but totes a slash line against of .209/.285/.297......Wells tossed a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout before the rains halted play.

Cubs Notes: SS Javier Baez was named an end of the season all-star for the Florida State League and manager Dave Keller was also honored. Baez hit .274/.338/.535 with 17 HR and 57 RBI in 76 games in the FSL.
