The Cubs promoted RHP Alberto Cabrera to Chicago and also activated OF Ryan Sweeney and 3B Luis Valbuena from the DL. To make room for Sweeney on the 40-man roster, relief pitcher Eduardo Figueroa (AAA-Iowa) was designated for assignment for the second time this season.
AAA—Iowa 3, Nashville 2—10 innings
After getting shutout for nine innings, Iowa (66-77) tied the game with two runs in the ninth and won it in the tenth over Nashville (56-87)
At the Plate: Greg Rohan's first homer of the season proved to be the difference as the first baseman knocked a pitch out of the park to lead off the 10th. Edwin Maysonet (.237) tied the game in the ninth, delivering a two-out, two-run single, scoring Ty Wright (.280) and Edgar Gonzalez (.268). Wright and Gonzalez both finished with two hits.
On the Mound: Justin Grimm had his best outing since being traded to the Cubs tossing five scoreless innings before allowing run in the sixth. He yielded five hits, walked three, and fanned six in his 92-pitch outing. Zach Rosscup pitched a scoreless seventh with two punchouts while Brian Schlitter allowed a run on two hits in the eighth. Marcus Hatley got the win working two scoreless frames with three strikeouts.
AA—Tennessee 4, Chattanooga 3
Brett Jackson's two-out RBI double in the top of the ninth gave Tennessee (76-61) the win over Chattanooga (58-80).
At the Plate: Javier Baez (.299) blasted his 20th homer in AA, a three-run shot in the fifth to tie the game. It was #37 on the year. John Andreoli (.286) led off the ninth with a walk, took second on Rafael Lopez's sacrifice bunt, and scored on Jackson's (.202) double. Jackson, Alcantara (.273) and Baez all had two hits.
On the Mound: Matt Loosen (3-3 6.14) ran his scoreless streak to 11 innings with four shutout frames of relief to earn the win. Loosen only allowed two walks and fanned five in his 56-pitch outing. Dae-Eun Rhee (5-1 3.34) allowed three run on five his in four innings with a walk and three strikeouts. Tony Zych (5-5 3.05) worked a 1-2-3 ninth striking out the final batter of the game.
High A—Daytona 7, Brevard County 4
Daytona (75-51) ended the regular season with their 75th win beating Brevard County (66-68) and finished with the best overall winning percentage in the FSL.
At the Plate: 3B Kris Bryant tripled home two runs in the first, doubled and walked finishing his High A season hitting .333/.387/.719. DH Daniel Vogelbach (.280/.455/.440) was 2-3 with two runs scored. 1B Dustin Geiger (.281/.365/.458) knocked in his 86th RBI with a pair of singles and two runs scored. C Chadd Krist (.253/.351/.382) ended the regular season with his batting average over .250 going 2-4 with a RBI double, his 14th. CF Zeke DeVoss (.246/.393/.354) swiped two bases and finished with 39.
On the Mound: Kyler Burke (6-1 3.35) fanned six in four innings but the Manatees got six hits, including a homer, scoring four times off the left-hander. The D-Cubs bullpen shut the door tossing five shutout innings. Sheldon McDonald (0-1 3.68) threw the first scoreless frame while Austin Reed (4-2 4.07), who got the win, worked around two hits in the sixth. Jeffrey Lorick (3-0 3.32) tossed two perfect innings and Zach Cates (9-9 4.12) worked a 1-2-3 ninth.
Cubs Notes: Corey Black, who came to the Cubs in the Alfonso Soriano trade with the Yankees, will get the start on Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark against Dunedin in the first game of the FLS playoffs. Black went 4-0 with a 2.88 ERA in five starts with Daytona recording 28 strikeouts in 25 IP.
Low A—Kane County 11, Peoria 2
Kane County's (54-80) offense broke loose for 10 hits in the win over Peoria (68-68)
At the Plate: Rock Shoulders (.258) had big night at the plate going 3-4 with two runs and three RBI. Oliver Zapata (.239) knocked in two runs and Jeimer Candelario (.253) was 1-3 and scored three times, walking twice. Marco Hernandez (.255) was 2-5 with a RBI and Trevor Gretzky (.311) smacked his first career homer, a solo shot in the fifth.
On the Mound: Nathan Dorris (7-3 2.87 ERA) earned his first win as a starter working five innings. He allowed a run on four hits and a walk....Justin Amlung (5-4 3.75) recorded his second save, tossing the final three frames, yielding a run on five hits with two strikeouts.
Short-Season—Hillsboro 14, Boise 3
Boise (41-34) got crushed by Hillsboro (33-42) but with the win by Salem-Keizer, the Hawks clinched a playoff spot based on best overall record.
On the Mound: Jose Rosario (2-1 5.48) got hammered for eight runs on 12 hits in five innings...Carlos Martinez (4-2 6.51) allowed six runs in 1.2 innings on six hits and two walks....Eduardo Orozco (0-1 3.77) retired all four batters he faced and Tyler Bremer (0-3 2.15) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.
