Game 2—Southern League Division Playoffs—Birmingham 7, Tennessee 1
Birmingham took a 2-0 lead in the Division Series beating Tennessee for the second straight night behind 11 hits.
At the Plate: The Smokies bats were silent for the second straight night getting only five hits in the game. Their only run came in the ninth on John Andreoli's RBI double, scoring Rubi Silva, who singled with one out. Former Cubs farmhand David Cales pitched the ninth for Birmingham. Javier Baez was 1-2 with two walks.
On the Mound: Dae-Eun Rhee allowed a solo homer in the second and the Barons tacked on three more runs on a throwing error by Baez and a two-run double. Rhee finished with a line of 4.1 IP, 7H, 5R, 2ER, 4BB, 2K. P.J. Francescon allowed two runs on four hits in his two innings. Hunter Cervenka and Armando Rivero retired both batters they faced.
Smokies Notes: Eric Jokisch (11013 3.42 ERA) will try to keep the Smokies alive in the best-of-five series when he takes the mound Saturday night at Smokies Park.
Game 2—Florida State League Finals—Daytona, Charlotte (Rays)
The game was postponed due to wet grounds and Game 2 will be played at 7:05 p.m. EST on Saturday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Ivan Pineyro (3-1 3.40 ERA) gets the start for Daytona and Charlotte will send Grayson Garvin (0-1 1.08) to the mound.
Game 1—Northwest League—Boise 5, Vancouver 0
Boise's Dillon Maples and two relievers blanked Vancouver in the opening game of the Northwest League finals.
At the Plate: The Hawks got on the board in the third when SS Carlos Penalver tripled and eventually scored on Daniel Lockhart's RBI groundout. With two outs in the sixth, Yasiel Balaguert singled and took second when Jacob Rogers was hit by a pitch. Rony Rodriguez knocked in Balaguert with a single and David Bote followed with a two-run double. Lance Rymel blasted a solo homer in the seventh. Rodriguez went 3-4 and Rogers added a single.
On the Mound: Dillon Maples scattered six hits as the right-hander pitched into the seventh. Maples fanned seven and walked two in his longest outing of the season. The Hawks bullpen was perfect as LHP Matt Iannazzo retired all three batters he faced, two on strikes and RHP Zach Godley set down all five of his hitters, including two punchouts.
Hawks Notes: The series now moves to Vancouver and Game 2 will be played at 2:05 p.m. MT on Sunday, Sept. 8. Starters have not been named.
3B Jesse Hodges has joined the Boise Hawks for the NWL finals. The Hawks will be without SS Carlos Penalver, OF Yasiel Balaguert, and P Carlos Martinez as they are unable to travel to Vancouver due visa and passport issues....OF Cole Gillespie and relief pitcher Michael Bowden cleared waivers and were assigned to Iowa.
