Cubs Oct. 19 Winter League Recap

RHP Marcos Mateo made his Dominican Winter League debut on Saturday night, earning the save for Estrellas. Matt Loosen and Lendy Castillo both threw a scoreless innings for Mesa.

Arizona Fall League

Matthew Loosen (0-0 3.38 ERA, 5.1 IP) and Lendy Castillo (0-0 2.25 ERA, 4 IP) both pitched a scoreless inning of relief in Mesa's 8-2 loss to Salt River on Saturday night. Loosen retired all three hitters he faced, two on strikes, in his 14-pitch outing. Castillo worked around a leadoff double retiring the next three as the runner was stranded at third.

Jorge Soler (.229) extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single and a run scored. Soler played right field and batted fifth. Wes Darvill (.250) got the start at third base and went 0-4 with two strikeouts.

Albert Almora and Kris Bryant got the day off and no AFL games are scheduled for Sunday. Mesa (7-2) is back in action on Monday afternoon when they host Surprise (6-4).

Venezuelan Winter League

Former Cubs pitcher Eduardo Sanchez won his second game in relief pitching a scoreless tenth in Aragua's 5-4 extra inning win over Magallanes. Sanchez has appeared in four games with the Tigers (4.2 IP, 2H 0R, 2B 7K). Sanchez, claimed off waivers from the Cardinals in May and sent to AAA Iowa, pitched in four games for Chicago (0-1 5.68 ERA, 6.1 IP, 5BB, 5K) in August. He was designated for assignment, cleared waivers and reported back to Iowa. Sanchez recently declared for free agency for 2014.

Dominican Winter League

Marcos Mateo earned a save in his DWL debut for Estrellas pitching a 1-2-3 ninth in the 4-2 win over Escogido. After missing the entire 2012 season with an arm injury, the 29-year-old started 2013 on the DL, and rehabbed in Mesa and AA Tennessee. He appeared in 13 games for Iowa tossing 16.1 innings with a 2.76 ERA and a .238 BAA.
