Oct. 27 Cubs Recap

Cubs 2012 Rule 5 pick Hector Rondon earned his first win in the Venezuelan Winter League with a scoreless inning of relief in a 5-4 win. Arismendy Alcantara knocked in his first run in Licey's 7-0 win.

Arizona Fall League

Had the day off. Mesa has 15 games left of their 31-game schedule and are 10-5-1 in their first 16 games, a 3.5 lead over Salt River (7-9) and Scottsdale (7-9) in the three-team East Division.

Venezuelan Winter League

Hector Rondon (1-0 0.00 ERA, 3G, 3IP, 2H, 1BB, 4K) the Cubs 2012 Rule 5 Pick, picked up his first win of the season, tossing a scoreless 8th as Caracas scored two runs in the bottom of the inning for a 5-3 win over Zuila. Rondon allowed a two-out single before getting a groundout to end the inning. He fanned one and threw 17 pitches in the frame, 12 for strikes. The right-hander was taken from the Indians organization and spent the entire 2013 season with Chicago (2-1 4.77 ERA, 45 G, 54.2 IP, 25 BB, 44 K).

Former Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano is alive and well in the Venezuelan League as the right-hander made his second start for Magallanes. After giving up five hits and three walks in three innings in his first outing, Zambrano lasted six innings, allowing two runs on five hits and six walks. He fanned one and surrendered a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth, leaving with a 3-2 lead. The bullpen couldn't hold the lead as they lost 10-3. Zambrano was signed to manor league deal by the Phillies in 2013 and he made seven starts at three levels, including four in AAA (1-0 3.32 ERA, 19 IP, 18 K).

Dominican Winter League

Arismendy Alcantara (.167) was 1-4 with a RBI and a run scored, and Julio Borbon (.125) singled and scored twice in Licey's 7-0 win over Toros. It was Alcantara's first RBI and he also added a sacrifice. Bourbon swiped his first base.

Mexican Pacific Winter League

Christian Villanueva raised his average to .296 going 2-4 with a pair of singles on Obregon's 7-3 loss to Mazatlan.
