Oct. 30 Cubs Recap

Dallas Beeler tossed four shutout innings to earn his third win in the Arizona Fall League while Marcus Hatley picked up his fourth save in the Mexican Winter League, despite a leadoff double in the ninth off the bat of Christian Villanueva.

Arizona Fall League

Dallas Beeler turned in his best outing of the season on Wednesday as the right-hander blanked Scottsdale for four innings, improving to 3-0 in Mesa's 7-0 win. He only needed 45 pitches, allowing two hits while striking out one. The right-hander got eight ground ball outs and has a 3.86 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 14 innings (four starts). Beeler missed most of the 2013 season after tearing a tendon in his the middle finger of his pitching hand in May. He made nine starts for AA Tennessee (4-2, 3.13 ERA, 54.2 IP).

Wes Darvill (.250/.308/.417) made his sixth start, playing third in the win over Scottsdale. The left-hander went 1-5 and scored twice. Albert Almora, Jorge Soler and Kris Bryant had the day off.

Venezuelan Winter League

No Cubs prospects saw action on Wednesday.

Dominican Winter League

Marcos Mateo added 2.1 more scoreless innings to his DWL resume on Wednesday night in Estrellas' 7-6 loss to Escogido. Mateo didn't allow a hit but walked two and fanned one. The right-hander has allowed one hit in 6.1 innings, and has two saves in five games.

Julio Borbon scored the winning run in Licey's 7-6 win over Gigantes. He pinch-ran in the 8th after a walk, took second on sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on groundout, and trotted home on Jurickson Profar's RBI triple.

Mexican Pacific Winter League

Marcus Hatley recorded his fourth save, pitching the ninth in Culiacan's 2-1 win over Obregon. The right-hander allowed a leadoff double to Cubs prospect Christian Villanueva in the top of the ninth, and after a groundout, walked a batter to put runners on the corner. Hatley then got the next two hitters swinging to preserve the win. It was Villanueva's only hit of the game in four trips to the plate.

David Villegas only faced two hitters in Mazatlan's 12-4 loss to Los Mochis. Entering the game in the top of the sixth, Villegas hit the first batter he faced and then allowed a RBI single before being removed. The 21-year-old left-hander has appeared in four games (1.2 IP) and allowed six hits and six earned runs. He pitched in 22 games in the Mexican Summer League in 2012 for Tabasco and made 15 appearances (22 IP, 19K 3.68 ERA) this summer for Mesa in the Arizona RookieLeague.
