Nov. 10 Cubs Recap

Yoanner Negrin got hit hard for his second straight outing, Marco Mateo was charged with a blown save but got the win, and Yeiper Castillo earned his second save as Cubs' arms were on display.

Mesa and the rest of the AFL had the day off.

Venezuelan Winter League

Yoanner Negrin allowed five earned runs in his second straight start as Caracas fell to Magallanes. The Cuban right-hander gave up two runs in the first and a three-run homer in the 6th. He surrendered seven hits and fanned four with no walks, throwing 78 pitches. Negrin threw 108 innings at AAA Iowa, making 14 starts with 20 relief appearances. He went 4-7 with a 4.17 ERA and fanned 118. Negrin's fastball sits in the mid 90s and he uses a varsity of arm angles, occasionally going side-arm. The Cubs signed Negrin out of Cuba in July of 2011.

Yeiper Castillo recorded his second hold allowing a hit and a walk in 1.2 innings with two strikeouts in Zulia's 6-5 win over Caribes in 11 innings.

Dominican Winter League

Junior Lake (.290) was 1-3 with a pair of runs and a walk in Estrellas' 5-1 win over Gigantes. Lake reached on an error and scored in the fourth and singled and scored the go-ahead run in the four-run ninth. Marcos Mateo (3-0 1.46 ERA) got the win but was charged with his second blown save after allowing the tying run in the bottom of eighth. A one-out walk hurt Mateo, scoring after a wild pitch and a two-out RBI single.

Julio Borbon (.136) went 0-3 in Licey's 3-1 win over Aguilas.

Mexican Pacific Winter League

Christian Villanueva (.219/.306/.391) continues to struggle as the third baseman was 0-2 with a walk in Obregon's 3-0 loss. The 22-year-old is 4-34 in his last 10 games with 12 strikeouts.

Puerto Rican Winter League

Jonathan Mota went 0-2 with a walk in Ponce's 3-0 win over Carolina. Mota didn't play in the second game of the DH. Rubi Silva was replaced after a double on Saturday and didn't play in the twin-bill.
