Arizona Fall League
Mesa's quest for an Arizona Fall League title came up short as the Solar Sox were shutout on five hits, falling 2-0 to Surprise. Dallas Beeler took the loss in the title game, allowing one run on two hits in five innings. Beeler allowed a two-out double and then a single for a run in the bottom of the second. He fanned five and walked one in his 56-pitch outing.
Kris Bryant, who was named league MVP earlier in the day, was 0-4 with two strikeouts while Jorge Soler went 0-3 with a strikeout. Bryant came to bat in the sixth with the bases loaded and one out but popped out to the first baseman in foul territory.
Venezuelan Winter League
After two tough outings (10 ER in 7.2 innings), Yoanner Negrin got back on track tossing 5.1 scoreless innings in Caracas' 6-1 win over Lara. Negrin threw 82 pitches, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out four. Hector Rondon (2-0 2.16 ERA) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for Caracas. Lara's Luis Valbuena went 0-4 after getting two hits in each of his first two games.
Frank Del Valle made his second start for Margarita working into the sixth inning. The left-hander turned in his longest outing of 2013 and fanned seven. He allowed just one hit and walked two. Margarita defeated Magallanes 4-1 but Del Valle didn't figure in the decision.
Dominican Winter League
CF Junior Lake was 1-4 with a run scored in Estrellas' 6-4 loss to Toros. Lake swiped two bases and has six for the season.
Mexican Pacific Winter League
The Cubs recently signed New York Yankees free agent minor leaguer Walter Ibarra, a 25-year-old from Mexico. Ibarra signed as a free agent with the Yankees in 2005 and spent the last eight years in the Yankees minor league system reaching AAA in 2013. The left-handed hitting shortstop is playing winter ball for Mazatlan and is hitting .149 in 26 games. Ibarra got the start on Saturday night hitting ninth and playing shortstop. He went 0-2 and was pinch-hit for in the 8th of Mazatlan's 6-2 loss to Mexicali.
Puerto Rican Winter League
Jonathan Mota walked and scored in Ponce's 5-1 win over Mayaguez. Mota saw his average drop to .194, going 0-3 with a strikeout.
Daniel Bard's struggles continued on Saturday as the right-hander walked all five hitters he faced in Caguas' 22-9 win over Carolina. In a third of an inning, the right-hander has not allowed a hit but walked nine. Bard was claimed by the Cubs on waivers from Boston in early September and didn't pitch for the Cubs in 2013.
