Cubs sign Wright, Dec. 4 Cubs Recap

The Cubs strengthened their bullpen Wednesday night signing left-hander Wesley Wright to a $1.425 million contract. Carlos Pimentel, Yoanner Negrin and Paolo Espino all made starts in winter ball.

Cubs sign LHP Wesley Wright

Wesley Wright grew up watching Cub games with his brother, earned his first pro win at Wrigley, and is now pitching for the North Siders. Chicago inked the 28-year-old on Dec. 4 after spending 2013 with Houston and Tampa Bay. The left-hander appeared in two playoff games for the Rays after being acquired for cash in August from Houston. Wright pitched in 70 games in 2013, totaling 53.2 innings with 55 punchouts. He logged 52.1 innings in 2012 for Houston in 77 games and spent six season with Houston. Wright debuted for the Astros in 2008 after being selected in the Rule 5 draft from the Dodgers. A 7th round pick of the Dodgers in 2003 out of Goshen High School in Alabama, Wright spent five years in the Dodgers' minor league system. In six years in the big leagues, Wright has appeared in 302 games, including four starts, with a 10-15 record and a 4.37 ERA. He sports a career 9.1 SO/9 and a 1.45 WHIP. Other than James Russell, the Cubs lacked left-handed pitching in their bullpen in 2013 and this move fills that need. Add in Zac Rosscup, who had a solid minor league season (2-2 2.12 ERA, 51 IP, 83 K) and pitched in 10 MLB games in September, and the bullpen from the left side looks improved.
