Cubs lose Rule 5 pick

Due to a grievance filed by the Philadelphia Phillies when the Cubs selected Lendy Castillo in the 2011 Rule 5 draft, the Phillies will receive the Cubs 2013 Rule 5 pick (# 4 overall) as compensation.

The rule states a player must be active for at least 90 days. Castillo broke camp with the Cubs and was placed in the DL on May 12 with a left groin strain. He rehabbed in Mesa, Daytona and Tennessee before joining Chicago on Aug. 11, and finished the season on the 25-man roster for a total of 91 days. Castillo was given credit for a full year of service time.

According to reports, the Cubs said they didn't plan on taking a player in the Dec. 12 draft.
